why is phillips a must keep? Bryan filled in a few times this year and there is likely more ruck options in the offseason.

Phillips may not be a ‘must’ keep - but Bryan is still pretty raw and unless we can find another mature ruckman in the off season I think you will find Phillips stays on our list

He’s close to a must keep. He is what you want in a backup ruck. If he left, you’d have to go looking for someone who is basically Phillips anyway.

Delisting a mature AFL ready ruckman, to go out and find another mature AFL ready ruckman, seems flawed. Phillips competes, and if he's happy enough pulling an AFL salary and playing a fair bit of VFL, it's not a bad way to earn a living.

We have the makings of a very solid best 22 for 2022. Its going to look something like;-

Ridley Hurley Reid
Heppell Laverde Hind
Durham Stringer Cox
Shiel 2MP Perkins
Langford Jones Tippa/Snelling

Draper Parish Merrett

Bench from: Redman McGrath Caldwell Smith

If we break it down

Defence:

  • Couldn't find a spot for Stewart though he's been serviceable down back and might play early depending on how well Hurley comes back next year
  • Francis best 22 but haven't included him as it seems likely he'll explore his options at the end of the year, Zerk & Ambrose unlikely to be on the list

MIDS:

  • Pretty solid here - Stringer to rotate with Langford as the big bodied mid to protect Parish and Merrett. McGrath, Caldwell & Shiel all high quality and can rotate through
  • Phillips/Bryan and to a lessor extent 2MP will provide support to Draper in the ruck, and we have some young real X-factor wingers in Durham & Cox.

Forwards:

  • Jones looks a fantastic prospect and we will build our forward line around him in 2022
  • Langford & Stringer true mid/forwards who can be equally damaging in either role so are both super important players for us
  • Shiel & Perkins provide quality on the flanks
  • Lets hope Tippa's form slump is temporary and he bounces back this year or early next, though Snelling & Smith can play this role
  • We are still lacking a key position forward though- hence I'd keep Hooker on the list - even on rookie list

He’s barely played any VFL anyway, he and Drapes have had perfectly timed injuries haha

He is a touch injury prone would be my only concern. I can’t really think of any better options to replace him and it’s not like our 1 year deal to be Drapers back up is going to entice any genuine good players.

This is the only issue, from my perspective.

The only potential risk to Phillips looks something like a >202cm ruck/forward or forward/ruck emerging with a similar level of raw ability of Bryan emerging and being considered in a similar range (i.e. 30 to 50).

I could see us holding out with Phillips' contract until after the draft with us being prepared to take the risk of relying on very young ruck fleet. I don't think Phillips survives beyond 2022.

We need a young version of Ed Curnow. Someone willing to roll up the sleeves while the other blokes do what they do but still have the ability to chip in when needed. Hope we actually look for someone like this at the back end of the draft.

i reckon we could aim a little bit higher than ed curnow lol.

The I would say you have not read the list. We have quality at the top end. What we need is a 200 game workhorse. Curnow has been a great workhorse for the Blues.

carlton have the top end talent too and ed curnow does heck all to help them get results. i reckon you just like him hey. good teams have work horses who are also damaging footballers, that's probably more like what we should aim for.

Ed Curnow is a tagger.. his job is to stop the opponent getting the ball. You can’t have a team full of stars and expect them to behave like a team. You need the ones that consistently play a role in the structures so that the stars can get off the chain without being punished for leaving their opponent unchecked.

Exhibit 1: GWS for the last 5-6 years.

except that doesn't happen at carlton, which is where ed curnow plays, so he's obviously not very effective at it is he?

Sorry but Curnow does more than **** all . If a few more of his team mates gave a **** about defence and team play they would get results.
He is exactly the style of player we need

We don’t need role players. We need Oliver and Bont. Secondary players rise to role players when the star power is there.
To replace who ?
Parish , Shiel , McGrath or Merrett ?
Melbourne and the Dogs have role players.
Team defence is one of our biggest issues.
We 100 % need role players.

We do need role players but we need quality as well. Not saying we have none or anything - but our top end talent lacks against teams you mention like Melbourne and Dogs.

Out of those 4 you mentioned - the obvious one for me is McGrath. I think if he were to be re-positioned and replaced with a bigger body to do a bulk of the grunt work around stoppages, it would provide a better mix.

But obviously you don't just happen to pick up an Oliver or Bont, so I'm not sure what his actual point was. That we should trade for them I guess?

It is not like I said pick a role player with our first pick. I did actually say we needed a Ed Curnow type with one of the later picks.
We need a few role players in the same way we need a KPF and a taller classy midfielder / winger and a decent small forward as well as a small / medium defender. In saying that if a few of the KPD players come on a bit then Laverde could convert to playing medium defender if needed.

Shiel/McGrath. No premiership team has multiple starting mids that offer zero physicality, marking ability or goal kicking.

Is this why Clarke is playing?
