I want another!
But I also want a full-back, I like Francis up forward.
We risk becoming a little too tall up forward if we do that. Though I wouldn't mind bringing in a key defender and shifting Stewart forward (still entirely unconvinced with him in defence).

Yeah, it might have taught him about forward craft. We certainly need another tall backman either way.
James Stewart is a forward I reckon. Ideally he's our VFL one who is depth.

To have a flexible team we need players who have shown the ability to play good midfield/wing roles playing all over the ground. I like Redman and Heppell pushing up onto a wing and Cutler as depth with that. I'd like to see McGrath playing down back. I like Guelfi as a defensive forward. I like Stringer at the centre bounce. Langford as a forward and Cox as that half-forward that runs and runs.

We are definitely needing one more genuine tall as Ridley and Laverde struggle to fill that role and would be devastating if given the freedom to float off a medium forward. I think Hind needs support and he and McGrath will provide the one-two punch that has always looked more devastating. Playing defensively-minded wingmen in Heppell and Redman rounds out a good defence.

Stringer is still a forward following the centre bounce plus Tippa makes for plenty of mercurial in the side. Langford and Cox provide midfield kms of presenting, Jones provides great lead up from half forward and then the twin rangers towers will work well if Francis demands enough attention early that his man has to follow him and leave 2MP one out.

Midfield is obviously in a great place.

I think this team still needs 2 more preseasons to be more consistent. The missed tackles yesterday could have been very costly if doggies could kick.

I know shiel isnt the most popular around here at the moment and he still hasnt hit top gear yet, but I think we are finding a really good balance with him, merrett, parish, stringer. Our midfield has been the doggies bunnies but they really played well as a unit yesterday, its the 2nd week a row now where they have stood up against some guys that have usually given us a lot of trouble in the clearances.
Cant wait to see caldwell/McGrath/Langford slot back in too.

If Francis hangs around and plays fwd, i'd be happy with 2MP + Jones + Franga w/Stringer, Waterman, Tippa & Snelling.
Gives us ample time for Baldwin & McBride to develop and assess.

Add to that, depth from Hurley & possibly Hooker, plus Stewart can play forward if we find the FB option.

Not done one of these, but;
Retain: Phillips, Zerk, Hooker, McBride, Laverde, Baldwin, Hind, Cutler, Hird
Retire: Zaka, Ambrose
Delist: Johnson, Mosquito, Gleeson, Cahill

Trades:
Guelfi to Freo for Schulz
3rd rd Pick to Dogs for Lewis Young
Port's 3rd for Brodie or Constable

Draft:
1st pick: Sinn (feels the best fit for us that would be available)
Split 2022 1st into 2x later 2021 picks if Goater and another need (Chesser/Taylor sound handy) are gettable.
1x SSP spot free (or more if Hooker/Hurley hang up the boots)

2022 side:
Ridley Reid Laverde
Hind Young Redman
Cox Parish Merrett
Perkins Jones Schulz
Francis Wright Tippa
Draper McGrath Shiel
Heppell Sinn Goater Chesser/Taylor
S: Cutler
E: Bryan Stewart Snelling Waterman

EDIT: Forgot Dev & Ham (and i'm hungry too)
Ham could be close to best 22
I imagine Dev gets picked, but should be helping coach the kids at lower levels (along with Hooker) and being a break in emergency/rest relief for the kids (New Zaka)

Expect Ambrose, Zaharakis, Johnson and Cahill are gone.

Hooker's a slim chance to stay on I think given our lack of talls, but unlikely.

I'd have said Cutler was 110% gone... but they seem to be using him a bit now so who knows.

Think BZT stays as depth. Phillips too, pretty perfect backup ruck.

Mosquito gets a rookie spot at most.

I'd delist Mosquito and keep Hooker of it came down to a choice between the two.
One is a heart and soul player who whilst his body may not be letting him is giving everything.

Mosquito is not committed to a professional career.

If it isn't a choice I'd throw a rookie spot to Mozzie at most but I'd choose to keep Clarke over him aswell.

If it came down to Mozzie vs Cahill then I think many in here will be surprised because I'm pretty sure Cahill gets the nod.

Seriously, he's a second year player who has shown versatility so far and gotten half a dozen senior games. I'm keeping him over Mozzie, Zaka, Ambrose, Johnson, Gleeson, Cutler and Hooker every day of the week.

The kid is averaging 16 touches a game in a shit VFL side and is probably leading their BnF right now. He might not make it but he's shown enough talent and application that he could do so. Cutting him now would be silly.

I think Zaharakis and Hooker retire, Ambrose gets delisted or retires, and Johnson gets delisted. Mossie probably gets delisted also, but that one really comes down to whether he wants to come back and play footy. We'd happily keep him if he came back.

Everyone else gets re-signed for at least another year. With only one first rounder and a couple of third rounders, this isn't the season to be doing a big cull.

What happened to Setterfield? thought he was going to be a star if healthy, and looked to be progressing well up until this year.
Tall, can play inside, can play wing and has played forward…. Might be gettable from Carlton

I’m a lot more relaxed about delistings etc because we have a coaching group we can trust to judge these guys.

I reckon players are now given more of a chance to succeed and if we keep somebody who, from the outside, looks like he should be delisted, it’s for a reason.

Laverde is obviously the prime example… if he was out of contract last year I reckon few would have quibbled with a delisting. Now he’s held down a key defence spot for a season.

Hooker might go but still, he’s made a good contribution this year.

Role players like Guelfi seem to be performing better.

Dare I say it, they even seem to be getting a tune out of Cutler!

He started to look quite good last year inside without looking a star.

He got squeezed to half back so that Teague could misuse a total of about 4 players, lost form and then got injured (I think).

Even though it isn't the sexy option, I'd be more than happy to have a conservative trade and free agency period this year.

The midfield is stacked, our ruck division runs deep, our defensive options are excessive.

I believe Cox is likely to develop in to a key forward, and Perkins will (ideally) turn in to a tall mid/forward.

I could be tempted in to a high level KPD; but pickings look pretty slim on the market ATM. Reid is a great long term option, but I'd love to have another elite tall defender talent in that 21-23yo age range.

I know there's a temptation to pursue a KPF as well, but unless we're going to be able to pry loose a Harry McKay (has re-signed), or Ben King (unlikely), not really sure who we'd target. Riccardi might be another moneyball option, but I don't think we're going to repeat the success of Two Litre for a 4th rounder.

We've got some cards to play in terms of our ability to shuffle around some picks this year and next (considering our father/son riches next year), so we can potentially target specific players in the draft and get ourselves in a position to secure them. Geez I'd love Josh Gibcus.

All in all, list looks in a good profile. No need to do anything other than keep securing 1-2 top level juniors per year.

You don’t think Cox’s best position would be off half back? Can run for days, great overhead interceptor, elite kick. I know we’ve got Ridley but I just feel Cox’s god given talents scream drive off half back. Can you have the two of them play that role and turn it into a differentiator against opponents for us. Dunno 🤷‍♂️

Yeah maybe.

Might be one of the reasons why they've started Francis forward.

Good to see we're prioritising a key position player which I assume would be a forward

Not sure there is anything out there. Although won't surprise me if we're planning on going for the top with Dodoro

Tom Morris article ok fox saying not interested in Cerra prioritising key position
I don’t think there’s any that are gettable with ability that also fit our age profile.

Unless Ben King falls from the sky, I reckon we take our picks to the draft.

Yeh he might be talking about an under 18 draft candidate as a key forward that we can get with our top 10 pick
I’m not even sure we’ll have a top 10 pick 😉
