McKay is meh. Don't love him, don't hate him as long as we don't overpay.

If we have cap space we can front load and pay a bit extra. I think money is the least of our issues at the moment. If Zerk leaves it'll free up some space. And Hep, Stringer & Shiel all likely to move on in the next year or 2.

BOMBERS DUO IN LIMBO

ESSENDON pair Will Snelling and Patrick Voss face uncertain waits, with the Bombers duo remaining without contracts for next season.
Both players remain out of contract and are set to have to hold until the trade period before any having any certainty on their futures.
The Bombers have already delisted five players – James Stewart, Anthony Munkara, Alastair Lord, Rhett Montgomerie and Cian McBride – this off-season after their poor end to the season.
Snelling has played 64 games at AFL level for the Bombers since being a mid-season rookie pick in 2019, after a single game for Port Adelaide in 2016.
Voss, a strong-bodied forward, is yet to make his AFL debut after being a rookie selection for the Bombers at the end of 2021. – Callum Twomey

I will read between the lines and guess that D'Ambrosio, Baldwin and Hunter all have contracts in front of them.

If we get McKay and Voss goes then that probably indicates Baldwin forward, which might explain why he hasn't signed yet as he may prefer to be a back man somewhere else.
I would suggest that it indicates Weideman forward.

Im actually really coming around to the McKay thing. Yeah he isn't a great defender but at least he is a genuine KPP not one of these false pseudo types Essendon has rallied around for years.

McKay being 200cm/100kg + means he is able to stand the big boys that have so often dominated us. Sure, we may still leak like a sieve but Hawkins may only kick 4 on us not 8, Hogan 5 not 9 etc.

Id be concerned if we did get Gresham to be a small forward through as we already have 3 similar guys on the list who are so - so fwd/mids. Would be paying for the sake of paying. I would be much more interested in a so - so guy with an elite attribute like Billings who could kick but doubt that happens.

So 30 currently on the senior list (assuming BZT leaves) allowed up to 38

Upgrade Baldwin (31)
Add McKay (32)
Add Goldstein (32)
Player for BZT (33)
1st round selection (34)
2nd round selection (35)
3rd round selection (36)

5 rookies (Mass, Tex, Menzie, Hunter, Voss) (maximum allowable numbers to total 44 with senior list total. Up to 3 rookies go this way (41)
Rookie selection 1 (42)
Rookie selection 2 (43)
Suplement Selection Period (44)

We would still have 2 x Category B rookie spots available. Who we fill this in with could be a combination of NGA's, Irishmen or unregistered AFL players, returning footballers in elite sports)

Just trying to work out if we actually have room to go and get all of McKay, Gresham and Goldstein which I don't think we do. Would be fairly daft of us to get Gresham when we already have an abundance of said small fwd/mids on the list. Sure, not AFL proven but exposed enough to back them in.

I think it can work with something like this.

We have 32 on the list.
(Then you can add in Baldwin and make an extra spot for BZT (and Snelling)
33: McKay
Snelling: Goldstein
BZT: Gresham
34: Pick 1
35: Pick 2
36: Pick 3 - could pass for a rookie pick?
37: Baldwin upgrade
+ 2 Cat B spots for NGA's

If you take the main list up to 37 means we can keep all 5 remaining rookies with no Rookie picks in the draft.

So assuming these things.

BZT leaves
Snelling and Voss delisted
Hunter, Baldwin and D'Ambrossio re-signed.

That gives us 35 on the list (31 on main list, 4 on rookie list) I am purposely not counting the CAT-B spots.

Which means we have up to 7 spaces to fill.

With those 7 spots I would like to see us at least recruit.

2 Wings (hard defensive runners)
2 Rucks (1 vet and 1 project)
1 Back flanker (mid sized half back flanker)
1 Midfielder (big contested beast)

The 7th spot can be whatever. (McKay fine here)

I alluded to the flanker types I like few months ago. Ideally I would like 1 x marking forward flanker and 1 x marking back flankers. I would actually double up on the back flanker with another kicker to add to Massimo (Lord outgoing releases a spot).

I think we can use;

2 x rucks (I mature, 1 raw)
2 x back flankers (1 marking, 1 kicking flanker)
1 x fwd flanker (1 marking option)
1 x midfielder to develop
1 x utility or ultimately a very high risk reward rookie pick.

That would do me. Pad out around the centre square and get more marking power into the group.

Next year is a big year to see what we have in regards to the small forwards and the key forwards before jumping at another KPF.

What if Wright goes down, or a ruck, or a key defender, let's say McKay who we don't even have.

Cox or Wanganeen are somewhat backup. The cupboard is more bare in other places.

We have coverage for KPP at both ends (not great but we have options) and I did say we need more rucks as well.

We have two wings on the whole list. Two. We need at least one more and preferably two.

I actually think the wingmen who eventuate are simply flankers who build up the aerobic capacity to run all day unless they are those very special talents like Gulden, Dacis, Martin, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera etc

Who do we have if Wright goes down? If you're going to argue we have coverage for the KPPs, we also have it for the wings.

To be fair, Draper has played KPF, Weidemann, Voss I expect to get another contract as a pinch, Langford could play KPF as a pinch. Add in Hunter, Cox could be educated to play there. Stringer? who knows.

I feel that solidifies my argument.

On another note, maybe Tew Jiath as a defender worth looking at with a later pick.
