A man who has been charged with 22 domestic violence offences against his estranged partner who was found dead in May has been released on bail.

The 28-year-old appeared in court via audiovisual link from prison, facing a slew of domestic violence charges after his estranged partner Tatiana “Tania” Dokhotaru was found dead in a Liverpool apartment on May 27. He has not been charged over her death.

Mr Zayat’s defence barrister Ertunc Ozen SC told the court that his client discovered the 28-year-old’s body at the Norfolk St unit.

He was arrested at the scene and charged with the 22 offences, including choking, intimidation, breaching an AVO, assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault and destroying or damaging property. He has remained in custody on remand since his arrest.

The court was told Mr Zayat was at Ms Dokhotaru’s home 20 hours before she was found dead, and the pair had an argument.

Police allege Mr Zayat destroyed her TV while breaching an AVO and causing fear.

The court heard Ms Dokhotaru made a Triple-0 call the night before she was found dead and alleged that she was being assaulted.

NSW Police said she did not leave her home address, while the database had different addresses attached to her phone number, meaning they couldn’t find her among the 297 apartments.

Mr Ozen said it was “quite unusual” police were not able to find her apartment given there was an interim Apprehended Violence Order in place.

Could it be the victim's phone?

And if so, did she throw it out the window to try and ensure that evidence on it was not destroyed?

Or in the hope that it being thrown out the window would alert someone to her situation?

Detectives issue CCTV footage as investigation into woman's death continues - Liverpool

Tuesday, 22 August 2023 04:17:22 AM

Homicide Squad detectives have released footage as they continue to investigate the death of a woman at Liverpool earlier this year.

About 8pm on Saturday 27 May 2023, officers attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command were called to a unit on Norfolk Street, Liverpool, where they located the body of a 34-year-old woman inside. She has since been formally identified as Tatiana Dokhotaru.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and Liverpool City Police Area Command established Strike Force Median to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

No one has been charged in relation to Ms Dokhotaru’s death.

As part of ongoing inquiries, strike force detectives flew to Canada last week, where they met with Tatiana’s family. Investigators are working closely with the Dokhotaru family to gather further information about her life and associates in Australia.

Investigators have also issued CCTV footage of a phone being thrown out of a window which matches the location of Ms Dokhotaru’s unit shortly before midnight on Friday 26 May 2023. The phone has never been recovered, with investigators urging anyone who may have located a phone in the vicinity of Norfolk and Bathurst Streets at the time to come forward.

Detectives are also continuing to canvass the Liverpool area for CCTV and witnesses
who may be able to assist with identifying Tatiana’s last movements.

Anyone who could assist Strike Force Median investigators is urged to contact Liverpool Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A separate critical incident investigation is continuing into all other circumstances surrounding the incident. This is being conducted by Fairfield City Police Area Command and will be subject to independent review.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or Crime Stoppers NSW – Report Criminal Information.
Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages'

Not that I like the odds but I hope whoever picked it up comes forward.

Some more on the missing mobile phone. (ID'ed as an iPhone 14).

'Missing phone could be ‘vital’ to solving Tatiana’s death in Sydney unit

...
Grainy CCTV, released by the homicide squad on Tuesday, shows the light of an iPhone 14 streaking into the night from Dokhotaru’s unit just before midnight on May 26.

The phone was thrown from the balcony at about the same time Dokhotaru made an anonymous call to police alleging domestic violence amid a fight with her partner Danny Zayat.
...
Homicide Squad Commander Danny Doherty said investigators believe the phone contains “vital evidence”.

“We’d like to know who threw the phone, and we’d like to know who is responsible for Tatiana’s death,” Doherty said.
...
Police have been unable to track or locate the phone. It’s unclear if the phone has been picked up by a passer-by or simply landed somewhere around Bathurst and Norfolk streets in Liverpool.

Doherty implored the public to hand the phone in, even if it is damaged.

“There’s someone out walking the streets now who, we believe, will have information that could help us, or who knows who is actually responsible for Tatiana’s death,” Doherty said.'

Could her killer have found it? They might find something else on CCTV not checked yet.

Like night follows day, the murder charge against Danny Zayat is in.

No mention of whether the iPhone 14 has been found yet.

'Police have charged Tatiana Dokhotaru's estranged partner with her murder.'

'As part of NSW Police investigations into Ms Dokhotaru's death, detectives executed a search warrant at a St Clair home about 6am today and arrested 28-year-old Danny Zayat.'
