TAR - Living a Recruiters Dream

Remove this Banner Ad

This is no regular TAR Story. In most you hear about the highs and lows during the season, in this one I'm the recruiter/List management officer so I'm looking at the pre-season and how to try and make my club the best club by making the best deals and delisting and drafting the right people. For this I randomly selected a club and it turned out to be Essendon. Now through each season i will skip and jsut tell you the end result and then have the pre-season events because they are very exciting for everyone involved. Except maybe the players ;)

So sit back relax as our story begins in the year 2004....

At the end of 2004 I decided big changes needed to be made so here is how I went about the pre-season:

2004: Essendon finish 11th with 10 wins, 12 losses
- Lloyd wins Coleman

Retired:
Matthew Allan
Justin Murphy

Delisted:
Mark Alvey
Ben Haynes
Aaron Henneman
Courtney Johns

Trades:
Tristan Cartledge & Angus Monfries for Nick Maxwell & Chris Tarrant
Matthew Lloyd for Matthew Pavlich
Ted Richards for Jason Saddington
Henry Slattery & Pick 38 for Nathan Ablett
Andrew Welsh & Jason Laycock & Pick 54 for Luke Hodge & Lance Franklin
Joel Reynolds for Pick 33

National Draft:

Pick 6# Justin Couse TB, 192cm, 95kg,
Absolute gun defender with strength, good mobility, marking and spoiling ability. Ready to play AFL straight away.

Pick 22# Colton Scotcher SF, 186cm, 85kg,
A fast goal sneak with good skills and stunning goal accuracy. Needs to work on marking a bit though.

Pick 33# Steven Speed ON, 185cm, 78kg,
The best tagger in the league and can shut down brilliant opponents but can also find the ball himself and rack up some good possies. Good goal accuracy and can play off a flank at either end.

Pre-Season Draft:

Pick 5# Brodie Holland (Collingwood)
Pick 18# Brett Peake (Fremantle)
Pick 25# Ryan Willits (Port Adelaide)

With Justin Course an immediate success, slotting straight into the backline, the team was filled with excitement after a disapointing year before. Chris Tarrant and Matthew Pavlich starred at their new clubs whoever the downside was that Matthew Lloyd won the Coleman Medal and helped Freo defeat us in the Grand Final.

2005: Essendon finish 4th in H & Away Season, come runners up to Freo
- Bradley - FB, J. Johnson - Wing, Hille – INT, all make AA Team

Retired:
James Hird
Mark Johnson

Delisted:
Mark Bolton
Marc Bullen
Sam Hunt

Trades:
Dean Rioli & Pick 63 for Luke Power
Ricky Dyson & Pick 47 for Adam Cooney

National Draft:

Pick 15# Travis Slade ON, 185cm, 78kg,
A project player who is super fast and racks up clearances and gets tht ball often. His weak frame means he won’t play much this coming season but spend a lot of time in the gym.

Pick 31# Parker Cade SF, 179cm, 86kg
Parker is a stong, skillful goal sneak with incredible accuracy and room for improvement which all adds up to him being a great player.

Pre-Season Draft:

Pick 13# Matthew Whelan (Melbourne)
Pick 21# Nick Malceski (Sydney)
Pick 26# Sean Rusling (Collingwood)

After making the Grand Final the year before Bombers fans expected big things from their team. unfortunately the retirees in James Hird and Mark Johnson really hurt their chances ans even with matthew Pavlich and Chris Tarrant kicking over fifty goals, wasn't enough to get to where they were the year before.

2006: Essendon finished 8th in the H & A Season, lost first final to Richmond
- Luke Power makes the AA Team – Rover

Retired:
Luke Power
Damien Peverill

Delisted:
Damian Cupido
Jay Nash

Trades:
Ty Zantuck for Daniel Cross
Mark McVeigh & Pick 25 for Aaron Sandilands
Brett Stanton & Pick 9 for Kane Tenace

National Draft:

Pick 41# Dante Stewart SB, 187cm, 81kg,
Dante is a Dutch born strong man with his endurance, skill and strength all above average. He just had to fine out his marking skills and one-on-one contests and he will be a star.

Pick 57# Mason Hibbs, TF, 188cm, 87kg,
Mason will join our long list of talented full-forwards and will be in the queue. He may have to wait a while but is ready to play AFL and all his stats are good for a tall forward except his marking which is still good. Could be the steal of the draft.

Pre-Season Draft:

Pick 9# Dean Cox (West Coast)
Pick 19# Andrew Bentick (Carlton)

Should not have gotten rid of Llyod..

No matter who i play I always try and trade for M. Gardiner from west coast and M Llyod - it almost always bring success Key Ruckman and Key goal kicker.

If you can also pick up a Judd or another exceptional midfielder then you are sure to get successful.

The key is to have a good full forward - you will know if you team is crap if each week someone else is playing full forward.

Then get a ruckman and develop a great midfield.

Whilst a centre half forward is important - dont go all ou for an exceptional one - go for at 79/80 ish Offense.

and then just stack your backline with Tallbacks and a couple of notable small backs for those rainy days.

2007: Essendon finished 3rd after the H & A season, Essendon win premiership against St. Kilda by 47 points!
- Bradley – FB, McPhee – BP, make the AA Team
- Pavlich, Tarrant and Franklin kick 11 goals between them in the Grand Final

Retired:
Dustin Fletcher
Jason Johnson
Dean Solomon

Delisted:
Jobe Watson

Trades:
David Hille for Pick 21
Brett Peake & Pick 21 for David Trotter
Jason Winderlich & Paul Thomas for Seth Friese
Matthew Whelan for Paul Chapman
Andrew Bentick for Pick 20

National Draft:

Pick 16# Griffen Merry ON, 17cm, 72kg,
His speed and skills are brilliant while he still has tones of improvement to come could be one of the best players in the league in three to four years time. He is an absolute gun.

Pick 20# Tristan Robb SF, 180cm, 79kg,
He comes in as the fastest guy in the AFL but he still ahs a lot of things to work on like his goal accuracy, strength and marking skill. He can also play as a small defender if needed.

Pick 32# John Gorman R, 202cm, 88kg,
John is a developing ruckman who has the ability to win lots of hitouts to advantage. He will learn the tricks of the trade from some of the best in the business with Dean Cox and Aaron Sandilands. Once he can bulk up a bit and improve on his one-on-one contests then he will be a star.

Pick 48# Joel Goodwin SF, 187cm, 83kg,
Joel has good offensive skills along with basic skill and a lot of speed. We need more small forwards so we stocked up on them this pre-season and they look to be the goods. Joel has a lot of improvement left in him.

Pick 64# Keegan Nowell SB, 18, 180cm, 78kg,
He’s got good skills, speed and endurance he will be a player of the future and a good representative for the Bombers.

Pre-Season Draft:

Pick 12# Mark Williams (Hawthorn)
Pick 21# Jayden Rendell
Pick 26# Ian Jamison

2008: Essendon finished minor premiers, two wins ahead of their nearest rival West Coast, only to be defeated in the preliminary final by West Coast
- McPhee – BP, Tarrant – CHF, Franklin – FP and Tenace – INT all made the AA Team
- Kane Tenace shares the Brownlow Medal with Brock McLean (Melbourne)

Retired:
Chris Tarrant
Brodie Holland

Delisted:
Scott Lucas
Jason Saddington

Trades:
Daniel Cross & Pick 14 for Casey Risk

National Draft:

Pick 30# Curtis Buckthought TB, 188cm, 82kg,
Curtis is a tough-nut defender with great spoiling skills and good at one-on-one contests. He just needs a touch-up on his strength and skills and he will go places.

Pick 46# Ben Maher TF, 192cm, 82kg,
Ben’s skill at one-on-one contests and ability to turn matches by kicking big bags of goals is uncanny. Once he earns a spot in our forward line I can’t see him losing it.

Pick 62# Dominic Carolyn SB, 175cm, 81kg,
Dominic will be our number 1# tagger after Speed developed more into a running midfielder. While his marking, spoiling and strength leave a lot to be desired, he is on par with everything else and with time should grow to be a very honest hardworking player.

Pre-Season Draft:

Pick 9# Mark Nicoski (West Coast)
Pick 18# Rick Ladson (Hawthorn)

Essendon had a lot of doubters at the start of the season after Tarrant and Holand both retired. Pavlich would stand up and kick 83 goals, two off the Coleman Medallist in Andrew Embley. Yet again Essendon missed out on the Grand Final by only a small margin but because of salary cap reasons several star players had to be delisted. Younger blokes will have to stand up next season.

2009: Essendon finish 2nd after the H & A season, they then finish fourth after losing to the Kangaroos in the preliminary final, Freo win another flag thanks to Lloyd
- Couse – FB and Trotter – Rover both made the AA Team

Retired:
None

Delisted: (Salary Cap)
Andrew Lee
Adam Ramanauskas
Steven Speed
Ryan Willits
Sean Rusling
Mark Williams
Adam McPhee
Aaron Sandilands

Trades:
Paul Chapman & Pick 39 for Max Finlay and Landon Walter

National Draft:

Pick 29# Erick Birch ON, 176cm, 77kg,
Erick is a real project player but he has good natural skill and goal accuracy. Once he bulks up and is able to match it with the bigger, stronger bodies, he will excel at AFL level.

Pick 45#
Jacob Wedlock TF, 194cm, 85kg,
He will make his debut this year I would think because he is ready to play AFL now with a good build and is skilled enough to be up to the task.

Pick 61# Jared Mulcahy SB, 178cm, 74kg
Jared has the skills, speed and endurance along with handy goal accuracy that will see him have a good career. He is still a very big risk pick but so late in the draft it’s worth it because he could turn into a gun.

Pre-Season Draft:

Pick 8# Clayton Tuck
Pick 16# Sean Rusling (Essendon)

told ya Llyod is worth his weight in gold (in this game)...if he can lead freo to premiership glory he can do it for anyone....

I would think you would be coping a fair amount of bad press after trading him away in your first year!

Mind you getting Pav is not a bad swap but hasnt lead to as many medals

Meh in terms of premierships, I figured Fremantle were the least likely to get within a bulls roar of Essendon's total. Beside he's lasted longer than I thought he would.

Yet again the Bombers aganisingly fell short of a Grand Final but there was some good signs of youngsters coming through the ranks. We picked up a couple of project players and welcomed a couple of former players back now that we have the salary cap space.

2010: Essendon finishes 4th after the H & A Season, then finish 3rd after losing to St. Kilda in the Preliminary Fianl who went on to win the flag
- Bradley – INT made the AA Team

Retired:
None

Delisted:
Nick Malceski

Trades:
Nick Maxwell & Pick 46 for Pick 30
Nathan Ablett for Pick 26
Dean Cox > Hawthorn
Simon Taylor & Pick 62 (Essendon) > Port Adelaide
Fabien Deluca > Essendon

National Draft:

Pick 14# Jorge Towers TB, 193cm, 96kg
He is a project player that needs work but he has good endurance and goal accuracy for a tall back. In a couple of years he could be up there with the best of them.

Pick 26# Braden Knott R, 200cm, 88kg,
He is a top mark for his age however his skills, speed and endurance need working on, he will only be used in emergencies but is an option if other ruckman are missing.

Pick 30# Brian Kinsella TF, 196cm, 94kg
Brian is built to go straight into AFL. He may need a bit of work on his strength and marking but otherwise he is good to go. His spoiling is excellent and his goal accuracy is pretty good. Could become a pivotal role when other our tall forwards retire.

Pick 33# Jared Foubister TB, 197cm, 89kg,
Jared is a big boy and while he’s not quite ready to play AFL, his marking is one of the best in the business and if he can work on the rest of his game, he will become a regular part of this team in three-four years time.

Pre-Season Draft:
11# Andrew Lee
19# Ryan Willits
23# Javier Trewin

just a followup to my question earlier mate, do you control the games? do you pick the team, play the match etc
or is there an option where you can just sim the game? with auto subs and the like?
sounds like a brilliant game which has a longer life than FF

Full version, you can coach the game, let the assistant coach coach the game at diff intervals, just tick the box. You can sim the game, but you can still pick the side, as Assistant coach can pick the side if you select not too.

All options available, much worth the $30 if you have that money to throw around.

Essendon were yet again up there but this time they sadly went out in straight sets. SOme positves were that Pavlich had a stunning season winning the Coleman and got into the AA team at the age of 31. Young Risk got a place too but yet again the salary cap struck and several youngsters were delistec but we picked up Jared Mulcahy in the PSD. Essendon need to make use of the next season because I feel it will be Pavlich's last. Come on Bombers no more mucking around we need another premiership and now.

2011: Essendon finish 2nd after the H & A Season, come 5th after going out in straight sets in the finals series
- Pavlich wins the Coleman with 65 goals
- Pavlich – FP, Risk – RR, both make the AA Team

Retired:
None

Delisted:
Travis Slade
Jaden Rendell
Ian Jamison
Curtis Buckthought
Domenic Carolyn
Jared Mulcahy
David Trotter

Trades:
Javier Trewin, Keegan Nowell & Pick 11 for Clayton Young

National Draft:

Pick 27# Jackson McGuinness SB, 185cm, 79kg
Jackson has good skill, endurance and speed and while he needs to bulk up a bit and get used to the stronger opponents, he looks like a steal at Pick 27.

Pick 43# Jacob Tosch ON, 176cm, 81kg
This kid has great ball getting skills and a lot of endurance plus speed to make him a great addition to the team and will be ready to play straight away. He also has outstanding goal accuracy.

Pick 59# Phillip Yarrow SB, 182cm, 88kg
Phillip or “Yarra” as he’s known has great skills and has the ability to play forward or back. With his endurance he covers a lot of the ground and can run with the flow of play if needed.

Pre-Season Draft:

Pick 9# Kyle Henry
Pick 18# Collin Shadwell
Pick 23# Jared Mulcahy
