I think the AFL has done well to not have the full investigation into what TT did out in the media…….it’s clearly a lot worse or more threatening than what’s been published. They don’t want the rest of the story to come out is what I’m tipping. I don’t know what happened, but clearly it was more than the media released. Whole thing was truly bizarre.

While not terrible some of his off season returns weren’t great either. Can’t imagine he will be in tip top shape if he did come back. Add to this the fact he never really hit his full potential in 4 seasons at North and it’s a massive risk even before you add the off field stuff.

could have been left like that to give him some incentive to get his shit together, rather than it being an actual possibility of him returning after 18 months

I don't know him or care to know him, he may well be Satan returned to this earth. Of course over the years many a coach has said they'd play the devil himself if he was any good.
The key here is TT is very good, looking over the majority of AFL lists, I'd suggest TT is top ten in most of if not all of them.
We have Tassie coming in which will further dilute the available talent.
He would be signed as a FA and be on bottom dollar, not much of a risk when for example North used pick 1 in the rookie draft on Toby Pink who should be nowhere near any AFL list. Toby Pink, let that sink in.
He won't be returning to North, but I do find it a little amusing that so many are adamant he will never play again.

Despite since backing down, they didn't do that because they were concerned for his mental health. They wanted a leg up, if the chance came to sign him. The AFL would know this, so will set a high bar, if he is to get a greenlight.

I have mixed feelings on Thomas playing again. On one hand, I wouldn't want my club to sign him and think he's a piece of garbage. On the other, whilst his actions were abhorrent, I'm not a fan of this one size fits all cancel culture. Sets a dangerous precedent. Any punishment should be proportionate to the crime, and in most instances, people should be redeemable in the right circumstances. For those reasons I am against a life ban but think the bar on any return should be set extremely high.

I don’t think it’s this simple.

Everyone knows his talent. No doubt recruiters and list managers will hold a level of interest. He’s an attractive proposition for them as a free hit.

Back in the 70s or 80s he’d get another go without a second thought. But we’re a long way from those eras, we’re talking big business here with significant money and reputations involved.

Boards, sponsors, members. Everyone has a say and what they say matters.

I’d expect any interest held by those in talent ID to be shut down pretty quickly.

As for what he does between now and then, whenever then is, I’m not sure on field is of much consequence. What he does off the field is far more relevant.
