Richmond just signed Campbell until 2029.

Not a star to be sure, but it's still one less Tasmanian available, therefore worth a note in this thread.

sanders currently dating dees aflw player Molly oheir

Tassie might want to work on getting her across also if they are still together in a year or so

Otherwise can’t see him leaving melbs either
This stuff is just not borne in reality.

If Tasmania offer him a 3 year 6 mill deal with 3 million as a sign on bonus he isnt staying at the Bulldogs... That is the type of contracts Tasmania will be able to offer people. They are going to gut lists alot more then people understand. It wont be the same as GC/GWS at all

Signing them means not a lot, if just means they will be forced to trade, Carlton also signed Lachie Cowan to 2028 but I would expect him to be one of the first targeted by Tassie.
Id argue it means nothing at all because Tasmania wont be signing the likes of Lachie Cowan or Seth Campbell. They will be aiming much higher then that

For Eagles I cant think of a player theyd even want given how much we suck right now but for a club like say Carlton id expect them to target the likes of Harry McKay or Jack Silvagni and for Richmond someone like Tim Taranto and Ben Miller.

By the time they begin they will have a good 20 mature aged players who would be from the best 22 of other clubs, including a few who are AA calibre players.

They need 40 players on their list, sure they will aim much higher with the likes of Daicos, Darcy etc to be the marquee players but they will also need an army of foot soldiers who are 24-28 before they set down roots with marriage/kids in school etc and the local Tassie players like McKercher, Cowan & Sanders should be top of the list to fill this role.

The list make up will look something like this,

3 Marquees - Nick Daicos, Josh Daicos, Sam Darcy, Wardlaw, Will Day, Caleb Serong, Tom Green etc (would expect these to be paid 2mi+)
10 x 24-28yo - with 50-100 games experience, are established AFL players and best 22 in their club
3 veterans - 200+ games to provide leadership
8 - DFA, fallen out of favour of existing club but will provide AFL level experience whilst the draftees develop
15- Draftees

True, but players being signed makes them harder to get, which at the very least will put their price up.

It's also an indication that the player isn't that keen on going (back) to Tas....If he was, he'd ensure he was OOC.

Not necessarily, the players and player managers could very well have had a discussion that if Tassie come knocking and they want to leave they will be released.. The clubs know that Tassie will be given a heap of draft picks they will be forced to use in trades and will end up overpaying.

How do you see that going?

Player "I want to play for Tas".
Manager "OK, so we'll sign you for a contract that'll make it harder for Tas to get you".
Player "Brilliant"

Lets use Lachie Cowan as an example, kid who is just establishing himself as an AFL player and fringe best 22.

Nick Austin - Lachie, we love you and see a great future at Carlton and would like to offer you a 3 year deal on $500k
Manager - The boy is from Tassie and we would like to keep our options open once Tassie kicks off.
Austin - We are happy to give you a 2 year deal on $300k, or the 3 on $500k and will hapily facilitate a trade to Tassie if that is still your wish at the end of year 2.
Lachie - I just want to play footy.

So in your scenario, Carlton is paying extra for...nothing?

What would Carlton get out of that?

Cal Twomey has reported somewhere that Tassie will have access to 1 player from each club as a free agent that they can sign the year before they enter the comp.

I’m sure that was the jist of what he said. They have many list concessions beyond just draft picks and sign on cash.

Whatever the concessions, being OCC will make it easier for Tas to get that player.

If a player really wants to get to Tas, he'll make sure he's OOC.

Will be a very interesting next 6 months. The AFL have neglected Tasmanian market for such a long time that they almost owe it to them to be flexible. They are a non profit and have consistently avoided expansion down south for commercial reasons. Time for them to look at their bank balance (very healthy) and think about the community for once.
The AFL doesn't care about Tasmania. If they did, there would be an AFL team in Tasmania already.

I found it hilarious that a brand new stadium is required. Why ? I don't know.

If there was 500,000 people in Hobart and 🚆 and Tramlines that connect to the Hobart CBD, it would be so much easier. It would be like a smaller version of Melbourne or Adelaide.

The AFL isn't short of money.

The AFL don't want to pitch in 200 million to make upgrades make a brand new stadium. They rather have someone else pay for it

Caleb Serong surely to Tassie in 2028 👌
Serong is good but if Tassie is gonna get a dockers free agent between Caleb Serong or Hayden Young, I would take Hayden Young given the choice.

He isn't as good as Serong but Hayden Young is 185 cm mid that can play inside and outside . He can play on a back flank or forward flank.

Best off all, he can kick well with either foot just like Jason Horne Francis

Do you think the go home factor would be that appealing anyway, if you were raised in Launceston for example that's over a 2hr drive to Hobart, so would there really be that much of a difference between catching a flight from Melbourne to Hobart compared to Launceston to hobart? Feels like if you were raised in Launceston or Northern tasmania you wouldn't really care that much about a team in hobart as the time to travel would be pretty similar anyway to Melbourne by plane.

West Coast and even to an extent Fremantle, were fortunate to have a large number of seasoned WAFL players to slot into their initial squads.

I wonder if Tasmania can find 6 or 7 players from their local leagues with experience.
West coast eagles were fortunate because the WAFL and VFL in 1987, there wasn't a big gap.

So those 19 to 21 year Olds the eagles got in 1987 were 25 to 27 year Olds when they won the 1992 grand final 6 years later.

Dockers got like at least 12 fringe players from other AFL clubs that returned to WA. dockers 1st captain Ben Allan played 94 games for the hawks between 1990 to 1994.

Dockers got a lot of 22 to 24 year Olds that played 3 or 4 or 5 seasons and 20 to 40 games each.

If that is anything to go by, I can't see any Free agents or any elite players in their prime age of 25 to 28 wanting to go to Tassie.

If Tassie are gonna get some experienced AFL players realistically, they will get target 2 specific aged types.

1. Those past their prime aged 30 or over with their playing list for 1 or 2 or 3 years.

2. The fringe or depth or rotation players aged 22 or 23 or 24 years old that have been on AFL lists for 4 or 5 years with 20 to 30 games of experience.

The rest of the squad with be 18-20 year Olds that they will develop as 23-25 year Olds 5 years later with 60-100 games each

Sure but I bet there are some decent state league players in Tassie....even if it's only 4 or 5 top notch ones

Tasmania as a whole is small place doesn’t matter were you are from most people travel and spend time in all areas of the state growing up . Also the talent pathway underage and Coates league programs are mostly centred in Hobart so juniors spend a lot of time in southern Tasmania

Apparently a lot of the best 'state league' level players in Tas play VFL or SANFL because they pay a lot better and give them better exposure.
There is no Tasmanian state league anymore got shutdown at the end of last season we now have three regional leagues now . We were supposed to have a vfl team this season which the best players from the state league would have played in but the geniuses from the afl decided to delay it to next year 🤦so the majority of good TSL players moved interstate this year Norwood has like 8 Tasmanians playing for them
