The Canberra Kangaroos when Norf folds
We have been given an ultimatium to relocate (once), kicked out of football leagues (twice), forced into mergers (at least three times) and yet we have survived as the North Melbourne Football Club for more than 150 years and are now in a better position financially than at anytime in our history to continue for decades to come. We can not be killed off, we are more likely to survive a nuclear holocaust than even the cockroach. :)

We aren't moving to Canberra, we aren't moving to Tasmania, we aren't moving from Arden Street. That's a fact.

can't work out one without the other. very fair call.

So what is it AFL? do we get a timeline or are you finally going to tell us to shove it and stop dragging it out for years and years, hoping we keep coming back like a sick, tormented puppy?

Premier Gutwein was on ABC news & made comment.

Clearly the push is on.

If the AFL keep obfuscating my bet is North Melbourne will get the arze first & Hawthorn will get a written down offer in line with the poorer games they've been bringing to Launceston.

Its about time the AFL were called out on their pathetic, arrogant, rude behavior

I don't understand, what are they trying to cope with? Their club makes profits and is almost debt free. The AFL cannot compel them to move in such circumstances.

It can't compel them to move, period.

Anyway, they don't want to move, just the money for FIFO. Incidentally, we don't want them here.

I think they'll get the arz from Tassie soon anyway. (I hope so ;))

It would probably be best from Tasmania's point of view, and North can always find somewhere else to sell games.

But doesn’t maximise it and that depends on how the fixture would be structured. Teams
Copping the bye in week 1,2 wouldn’t be happy. Harder to sell 1 added team to the broadcasters than 1 GAME a week.
Premier and Runner Up get the first two byes? I think if everyone gets two byes a year most won't have much a gripe. Having byes gives flexibility in the fixturing, too. Can guarantee a Thursday night game every week.
- 11 additional H&A games, and
- 24 (or however many rounds worth) Thursday Nights compared to the current 12(?)
That's still a big win for broadcasters.

So adding an extra week? I think if you haven’t learn anything from this year is they can guarantee Thursday night games with teams wanting quick turn arounds maybe for back to back road trips. Plus you talk about uneven fixture Premier gets a bye round 1 then round 24.

I just can’t see one team being added and don’t the heavy hitters do either (presidents and channel 7. Doesn’t make sense at all but Time will tell.

Demographic change is the main reason. [No] Tasmania's population has aged considerably [Not for 1y.o to 14 y.o.'s] over that period and the overseas migration it has received are people with no interest in football.[Same for all states] There are so many choices these days for young people including massively popular global (and largely non-contact) sports like soccer and basketball whilst work and weekend shopping and other things occupy younger people's lives. [Same for all states]

Our game, until relatively recently, has hugely lagged soccer and basketball in terms of female participation and this has also been a significant factor. [Same for all states] Per capita is a pretty poor way of making assessments.[No. Per capita growth- or, uniquely for Tas., per capita decline- is also very important for KPI's].

You have failed to properly address my question to you "Why do you think that Tas. AF GR nos. are down 22% per capita, cf 2000".
Your response does not explain the Tas. 22% per capita decline, cf 2000 Tas. AF GR comp. player nos. The other states are having an increase in raw nos., & per capita.

Madmug's 2016 Census figures show there is no significant % difference between Vic. & Tas. of persons aged from 1 y.o - 14 y.o. (18.2% of the population, cf 17.7% respectively).

All states have foreign immigration. Tas. almost certainly has far fewer per capita from the Middle East & Asia- who, on the Mainland, have very low per capita & raw nos. in GR AF comp. nos. (excluding Melb. private schools & VAFA Old Boys' Clubs- who have reasonably good nos. of players from an Asian background).
In Melb., c. 12% of the general pop. have an Asian or Middle Eastern background. Tas. is much more Anglo/Celtic- the AF demographic.

Tas. GR AF, therefore, should be suffering much less, per capita, from foreign immigration...but its deterioration has been worse , cf the other states!

Your glib comment on the appeal of non-contact sports, like soccer & basketball, applies to all states- but Tas is the only state that has had such a GR AF decline (22% per capita lower, cf 2000 comp. player nos.).

The AFL Tas. Report only provided comp. player nos. for the period 2016-2019. Why do you think it chose this narrow period?

Why did it not go back to 2000- when Tas. had the highest per capita GR comp. player nos. in Australia?
It declined from 2000.

In Tas., elite jnr cricket teams & professional Tas. cricket teams, have been reasonably successful- & both remain competitive with all the other states. How do your "demographic" arguments explain this?
Ditto less high profile sports in Tas.?

In contrast, in elite jnr AF teams & pro AF (ie not producing as many legendary champions & stars as previously, declining Draft nos.), Tas. is now very uncompetitive with Vic., WA, & SA. Amazingly, Tas. previously had a few State match victories against Vic., WA, & SA state teams; & was competitive in many State games.
How do you explain the Tas. huge discrepancy in elite jnr & pro cricket, cf elite jnr AF & pro AF?

Tribalism is a crucial factor in the growth of GR & elite AF all over Australia. Do you agree?
Tas. state tribalism, local heroes, & well-resourced elite pathways are fundamental & irreplaceable for the progress of AF in Tas. Ditto its own AFL team, for the progress of AF in Tas..
Do you dispute this- if so, on what basis?

K. Cornes said that the creation of a 19th team in Tas. must be a "priority for the AFL". He did not state specifically when, but implied it should be imminent.
He was also a strong supporter, pre covid.

His father, Adelaide radio commentator & journalist G. Cornes, a few weeks ago said it was "a national disgrace" Tas. did not have its own team.

Well as noted, the state Government have made a stand. Covid or not, their is NO excuse not to have a 5 year plan.

If the AFL just don't want us, then have the balls to say so. Then we'll dump the FIFO leaches & do out own thing.

Our local football is in disarray now so then being booted out will make no difference to the current mess. AFLTas have shown no inclination to help. Their only roll is to suck whatever talent shows up & export it. Also being the smiling faces of the AFL locally. They are a waste of O2.

What's the difference since 2000 though? Was it a higher proportion then?

Not that it would likely explain a 22% drop, but it's not really helpful to compare it to Victorian numbers now. You need to compare it to Tassie numbers in 2000.

MOST people can see that a 19th team can work well without a 20th. And a 20th team has not been part of the serious discussion. The AFL may use it as a excuse to postpone Tas, but without good reason.

One thing about Tasmanian premier is that he has a strong footy background.

Another is that he is no fool.

The AFL will now have to either say to the nation 'As the Australian Football League, we're not interested in the people or the football of Tasmania' or, lets work out a legitimate pathway to the AFL by 2025.

The time for the AFL's BS & obfuscation is long gone.

Yes, according to B. Godfrey recently, the per capita % of Tasmanians (male & female, jnr & snr) playing Club AF was much higher in 2000, cf 2019 %. In 2019, there has been a 22% per capita decline in Tasmanians playing club AF.
(But raw club nos. & raw Club Auskick nos. have increased by c. 4520- half females- from 2016-2019. Total 16,180 in 2019, according to AFL Tas. figures).

Godfrey also said that, in 2000, Tas. had the highest per capita % of any State in Aust. playing club AF.

2. This is 2 lists of 45 Tas. snr AF clubs, from 1992-2017, that have either completely folded (ie not even merged); or were a single entity club, but forced to merge (due to lack of nos.). Sandy Bay the most famous. Since 2017, probably at least 8 extra snr clubs have folded totally, or forced to merge.

(Scroll to post#120)

Tasmania's population is growing, across all age groups, from 1992-2020. The loss of much of the timber industry & timber jobs caused many small country clubs to fold/merge.

In contrast, Tas. GR soccer & basketball club comp. nos. are thriving, at record highs- combined, now FAR surpassing AF GR Club comp. & club Auskick nos.

3. To the AFL's shame, Tas. again had no players recruited in the AFL National Draft 4 days ago.
Tas. had only 2 players drafted into the more precarious Rookie list.

4. Adelaide Radio 5AA presenter G. Kornes has again lambasted the AFL over Tas.
He said "Maintain the rage. Keep pressing. The weight of public opinion is with you...".

(Scroll down to 8.12 tweet from G. Kornes)

In this above link on 9.12, Adelaide Radio 5AA S. Rowe Sports Show Presenter, can anyone link his interview with T. Lane & I. Callinan, on the progress of the Tas. Bid?
Link appears not to be working?

I think the last time the AFL included in their public questionnaire, whether Tasmania should have a team.

If memory serves, I think it was a 79% affirmative vote.

But what is the proportion of males of playing age in Tassie in 2000 compared to 2019? You compared Tassie's current numbers of age 1-14 to Victoria, but that doesn't really say anything.

If you want meaningful comparisons, compare males 6yo - 40yo (or close to it).

Calling the AFL out and announcing that there is no more money for Hawks or North is probably their best/only chance to get a team. Nothing to lose.
