… I'm afraid we're stuck with Boot park. … It just confirms the stupidity of building a stadium in a village area next to a beach. Bellerive was the dumbest idea of all time. They were told time & time again as they built it. Just stupid.
You are right – I’m still holding out hope for a new stadium somewhere near the CBD’ because Bellerive Oval is in the worst possible location. Spending more on it is, IMO, throwing good money after bad. Better to cut the losses and get a bit of money back by selling it off to land developers and build a new stadium in the right location.
That costs half a billion dollars? No wonder nothing ever gets built there. That's insane.
My thoughts to - surely they can build something of that size fairly decent for little more than half that cost. If not Macquarie Point, are there any other possible good viable inner city sites for a stadium?
… I love QE - and Bendigo used to be in our zone. But all it has is one small heratige stand. Virtually starting from scratch there as far as facilities go. The oval in Gippsland where the had the BBL game last summer would e more likely. Albury is a great sport for a secondary market but Lavington is too far out of town and has really small playing field that would not suit our game.
Lavington Oval has been closed all this year and won't be re-opened before the O&M League's finals next year, for a multi-million dollar re-development, including extensions of grand stands. Though not a great location, Albury isn't so big that it's all that difficult to get to and IMO, on completion it will be a better option than Bendigo - or Ballarat for that matter. It would attract fans from a wide area right up to Wagga.

And meanwhile, the pledge number has climbed past 55,000 - https://unitedwestand.com.au/

The brand new stadium in Townsville is only costing 250 million with 2000 less capacity, they should be able to build a stadium a lot cheaper then half a billion.

If you look at the photos and the articles discussing it, the plan is not just for the stadium. It also includes building a hotel and a convention centre as a part of the development.

FWIW, the Melbourne Convention Centre and the more recent expansion cost around $200m-$300m each. I dont expect this to be on the same scale as Melbourne, just highlighing these kind of structures are not cheap

The domain would be the only location near the cbd that would be large enough .

We've been through enough plans for the Macquarie point 'development'. For a small city we have real growing traffic & housing problems. Spending that sort of $$$$ to build a stadium on the water front would be silly & quite simply 'poor' politics. The area will be for the expansion of accommodation & entertainment in keeping with expansion of the fantastic waterfront we currently have. Maybe like a mini Docklands/Southbank sort of development.

um thats what im saying - his proposal includes a convention centre and a hotel, plus restaurants and the like. its not a stand alone stadium proposal

*this is academic however given the govt isnt even considering it yet

Yes, even though its on a hill. People wont walk up hills;). That's one reason why the Cricket moved off the Domain & went to Bellerive in the first place. North Hobart Oval would have been ideal if they'd thought more about it in 1986 when such expansion was possible.

Hobart city council were (& still are) too stupid to see the potential in that sort of development. If no one had mentioned football but maybe promoted it as a place for outdoor Symphony Orchestra performances, then the Council/Battery point Latte tossers may have backed it.:(

If they do upgrade tram/light rail for the Northern suburbs, then KGV would really be the best place. Its already an AFL size ground so just needs the infrastructure built. Also it has lots of parking options, bus mall, & access to the Brooker Hwy. Its close to where the Wikinsons point development of hotel/café & basketball stadium (the old DEC) is looking at a $200mil development via Larry Kesselman & the NBL push.

But really, we're stuck with Boot park.

Ok, But the 'powers' wont put football in that area. Too many latte sippers have control of things. They'd rather build a 'reflection' park so we can relax & drink gallons of Pimms or green tea. :(

depends. its amazing how poli's change their views if $100m of fed funding (for example) was contingent of the stadium being involved

kgv is a good ground but there’s still a lot of housing in close proximity to the ground like Bellerive it might be workable if they took over the soccer ground area as well! the Showgrounds would have been ideal plenty of space right on the highway Bunnings have ruined that idea though I still think the domain would be ideal plenty of space for parking room for a training and admin centre walking distance even with hill from cbd highway either side for traffic flow close to bridge for eastern shore for players seem to like being based in the trendy inner city areas don’t think Glenorchy would have same appeal with players

Yeah fair enough. I just compare it to Metricon which was built for about a quarter of that - which admittedly wouldn't be as suitable in Hobart because of different weather conditions. But a slight variant you'd think would be acceptable.

If he AFL is serious about gaining traction in Western Sydney, GWS needs to be rebranded Western Sydney, then play more games in Sydney.

The only issue with Lavington is the parking situation. A third party owns the closed sports club across the road and refuses to open the carpark for events.

It's about an 8 minute drive from central Albury so the distance isn't really an issue.

Will be interesting to see what future AFL and Albury could have together once the renovations are finished.

I think in the end they will get their own team.

Was always against Canberra as it looks to people who don't know that the club has 1 shoe in a plan B, I'm all for my capital brothers and sisters but I can see it happening.(Not anytime soon).

If the AFL was ever a real national competition, Canberra should have had a team of its own long ago, same for Tassie.

However the AFL was really only created as a life jacket for the bankrupt & dying VFL.

no definition of national requires a team in every goddamn major city in the country.

The TCI cheif has again been out expressing their opinion that a team in Tassie needs to be solely based at UTAS stadium,it's this sort of stuff from people up here in the north that will damage our hopes of getting a team.

I agree - I foolishly thought the Tasmanian press wouldn't encourage this sort of parochial crap this time round, but alas, in the North at least, it isn't so.

The editorial in today's Launceston Examiner first condemns the idea for any multi-purpose new stadium in Hobart, which might be fair enough, but then goes on to call for the new AFL club to be based in Launceston -

I thought this stuff was exaggerated by mainlanders and didn't exist?
I live in the North of the state and it is very big up here, the North is by the worst,if we had a team I would be more than happy to travel to Hobart once a month to see our own AFL team play. Some people in the North will keep going on about this until they wreck it for everyone, they will go on Soo much the AFL will deem it too hard and walk away.

I thought this stuff was exaggerated by mainlanders and didn't exist?

Was listening to local ABC radio this morning when they interviewed one guy who's on the AFL 'taskforce'. Errol Stewart is from Launceston & was asked about this. He basically said both Hobart & Launceston have merit in being the base for the AFL. However he said that such a team will have some 200 people involved in running it. Players, footy officials, admin officials etc. Many of those will be from the mainland. To find work for partners, school & housing opportunities, it makes sense to base it in the bigger city.

I've also pointed out the fact the RHH is the only tertiary level hospital in the state, with more numbers of specialists available. Hobart also has the only sports medicine physicians in the state. Hobart airport has a greater choice of flights & historically has less fog events.

The Examiner piece waffles on about Launceston being more central, that 'York Park' can be more easily expanded, that more parking is available.

The obvious point is that games will be shared between the North & the South. So what's the value of York Park somehow being more 'central'? So what that York Park can be built on more easily, or that the parking is better? All that stuff matters not to where the players live, but that's the local mentality unfortunately.

I hope they make a reasoned decision. If they decide for Launceston, so be it. I think it'd only be an overtly political decision if its decided that way. I think its obvious which city could better host the players & staff. Even a northern business identity can see that.

I'm all for it and hope they come in but just was stunned that a Tassie paper would start this stuff up and give those against a reason to nix the idea when it's gaining such support.
