The sooner we get to 24 teams the better. Then we can organise it into 2 divisions and play a full H+A comp with 22 weeks, just like the old VFL did with a 12 team competition. Top 4 promotion/Bottom 4 promotion. Div 1 plays Top 5 finals over 4 weeks, Div 2 play Top 4 finals over 3 weeks, to give each division a grand final on Saturday 2pm in clean air (all finals would be in clean air).

It was a complete load of s**t. Eddie shooting from the hip without thinking.

$20m per annum from each of the state government and feds? Forever? Taking away from the absurdity of the amount - they don't need $40m outside normal revenue streams - you can't have a team based on an indefinite commitment from multiple levels of government. You only then need a change of government - and for a state that has a high Greens vote it's likely they'll be part of some sort of coalition government in Tassie in the future - and the funding commitment is redirected into something else and the AFL are left carrying the can.

A stadium with a roof? Insane cost. Especially given it's pretty much accepted that the team will split games between Hobart and Launceston. No-one's spending half a billion dollars for 6 AFL games a year plus a few BBL games.

$100 million licence fee for a new team? GTFOH. Who's paying that? Unless he's saying bring private ownership into the league.

Northern Crocs? Jeez, there's more holes in that than Swiss cheese.

I haven't watched it yet but it would presumably involve a long term commitment from government, presumably coming with full management rights at peppercorn rent of the new Hobart stadium and York park

It allows clubs the chance to develop players in a league where they won't get smashed every week. 1/3 of the league gets promoted or relegated respectively each year which keeps movement high and doesn't let clubs get stuck down the bottom of the 2nd division (as opposed to the EPL which is 15% of teams, less than half that of 33% in this case).

I think Eddie is right and the Tasmanian Govt needs to get off their backside and build a new 40,000 covered Stadium in Hobart and set up and fund a proper Financial Plan if they really want this to happen and not just use it as a vote buying exercise every time an election comes around!

The North QLD/NT idea also has merit with most matches in Townsville and a couple in Darwin and Alice Springs it would make the AFL a truly National Comp!

North QLD is a shithouse idea. More AFL teams in QLD than traditional AFL states in WA and SA? Plus Townsville hates AFL. Cairns and Darwin are too small.

Canberra is the best investment for team 20, only problem is GWS are more popular there than in western sydney already i think.

Eddie was playing fast and loose with his language, and it sucks coz it's undermined a great point.

When eddie says it needs a roof, he means like MCG/Optus/KP have a roof. Everyone is protected from the wind and rain, there's no grass hill like Ballarat or AO. Not a full scale Docklands roof.

Yeah I think the fact the image was of a stadium with a roof over the seating suggests that is what was meant

It's quite possible that the financial plan is inadequate....for instance does it make assumptions for which the risk would fall on the AFL?

My favourite part. Tasmanian weather is not that different from Victorian weather (as someone who's lived in both places), and the only other thing that will use the stadium will be cricket which is played in the summer. A roofed stadium would be ridiculous overkill.

Surely North Melbourne & St. Kilda are the most vulnerable for interstate relocation if that were part of the AFL plans, in regards to expansion.

Tbh though, I don't think the AFL will want to relocate any VIC club interstate in the future and would instead add more teams in the competition until the competition can allow every team to just play each other once (20/22/24 teams)

It stopped working back in 1987.
Actually, it's only ever worked as you wish it to work for about one quarter of the VFL/AFL's existence.
That is, it's a complete non-issue.
As I said earlier, 18 clubs is plenty, don't need any divisions or conferences or whatever other crap ideas people are pinching from wherever.
