Have said this for a while. Would allow for more tactical flexibility as well. Do you just get rid of your wings, or do you sacrifice your forwards for more midfield presence. Those 36 players would almost account for another team.
Some of the ideas being thrown around here are absolutely stupid. You do know what would happen if this got approved yeah? it would be a witch hunt for Gill's head.

Decreasing the player pool by 36 players will do s**t farrk all. That is 36 individuals of a rapidly increasing 25 million population. There's so much untapped talent out there who have not been given any opportunity. Proven time and time again that there are players in the VFL SANFL WAFL etc more than capable of playing AFL. If anything it will allow for more variation. More talent scouting. More emphasis on grass roots.

The major issue with Tasmania is player retention. Things can be done to help that situation by giving the team first dibs to all potential tasmanian draftees no matter what.

Their is no issue with player retention in Tasmania. We don't have a team to retain.

So please don't put the cart in front of the horse.

Player retention is a lot to do with team culture. Also lifestyle preferences, like family attraction, vary between players. No doubt Hobart offers the best cafe/restaurant cosmopolitan lifestyle in Tasmania. However lots of guys like the fishing, shooting, bush lifestyle to 'get away' from it all. That applies to all of Tasmania.

In the end its a professional sports job. So given the above I don't foresee a player retention problem.

Serious question: Why did the previous Tassie team in the VFL fail?

It failed after it was amalgamated with North Melbourne. It had wide community support & good crowds until then.

I believe their were internal issues of questionable management which also affected the team. AFLTas seemed to get ahead of themselves & destroyed the team with their poor, short term decisions.

A lot of people here asked the question, why? We got no answer but the 'activities' within the team & management seemed to seal its fate. The fate of many of the coaches, staff & the General manager as well.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Think about that.

An AFL club should be run by suitably qualified, experienced & 'professional' people. That is what happens in the best clubs. Good management, not a boys club where they are all out for a good, well paid, time.

Exactly, you have memberships for 3 different clubs. As I said, you're an 'AFL' supporter. You probably care about things like NSW and QLD crowd numbers, TV ratings, grass roots growth of the game in rugby states. You should move to Melbourne and get a job as Gil's fluffer.

Just to clarify a few points …… I am originally from Melbourne, I was at the 1968 GF.

I want to see the game succeed in NSW & QLD as I have very little time for rugby league.

On the flipside, you have the username 'Birdbrain' and clearly you are living up to that fame.

or just relocate north but I personally like the idea of cutting 3 teams

Only if one of them is Collingwood.

Since every time someone in this thread suggests it they seem to be a Pies supporter. If it's such a good idea you won't mind your own side relocating down there.

To be fair Collingwood has proven themselves able to support themselves by playing home games solely in Melbourne. I'd be looking at the clubs who are already more than willing to play anywhere for money.

Sandy bay were bankrupt. Pointless blaming anyone else for that. They sold their pub, Travellers Rest next to the Casino for a pile of cash. Where did all that go? That question has always been asked as every footy person I know were very interested in how quickly they went bust after getting all that money.

All footy was affected by the growing amount of VFL/AFL on TV. That affected all local footy. In the end that even killed the VFA, the nations oldest footy league. Having an AFL club at least keeps interest in football here & the effect of players coaching here locally when they retire or get cut. Its a trickle down effect. But thats better than nothing. Certainly better than the current FIFO clubs taking all & leaving nothing.

I remember when the travellers rest got caught in watering down their drinks. After that I believe the casino brought that pub.
I agree the best thing to revive the tassie market is by having an afl team.

That watering of drinks can't have happened when I was there last. I remember we called in for a couple, stayed little too long & got pissed. Then drove home. :(

Well you could & did back in those days, & we did, often. ;)

Going from memory early 90’s that it came out. The last time I was there would have been 2003 for work training. At that stage it was being used by the Tasmanian gaming commission.

The player retention issues in Tassie wouldn't be as bad as GC or GWS. Once players got there and saw actual crowds turn up and people passionate about the game it would create an environment that you would want to be part of.

It helps with the numbers a bit. I mean realistically 9 teams in Melbourne is too many. It shouldn't be anymore than 6. Now 6 is not going to happen, but even only having 8 would be a help.

Relocate North Melbourne, have them play 11 games in Tasmania, but at the same time promise them in the fixturing that they will get a minimum of 8 games in Melbourne. That way their fans will still have a team.
No thanks.

I’m sure it’ll be a new club. The value for the AFL is in having a tenth game. So club 20 may be the key thing to it happening.

20 clubs...fmd, but this is something that the AFL would definitely do, don't worry about the standard of the game, let's just maximize profits!

Then its back to the future, ORIGIN .... or will we deny the standard has dropped, back to State League levels, how many good players do you need to win a flag, how many duds can a premiership side carry (plenty!!). Top opportunity for the clubs specialising in 'dud' squads.

The last plane out of Sydney will have gone .... ;)

Telsor you still about??

Wow thought you'd have a life by now

Doesn't take much time/effort to repeat the same reasons that a Tas team would only ever be a charity case. It's not like anyone ever actually disputes them meaningfully after all.

Really just cut/paste these days, so it really doesn't take any significant time out of my life.

I sometimes wonder if anyone will ever come up with a better reason for a Tas team than the vibe/mabo argument. Alas, it seems not.

I've seen people refute your arguments before, and do a good job of it, but arguing this with you is like bashing one's head against a brick wall, that's why nobody is engaging with you on the topic anymore. You simply don't accept any counter-arguments at all, which makes you the very definition of biased. You also give yourself a lot of praise for your arguments, like they are priceless gems of thinking whose majesty must be appreciated - when actually they're a bunch of negative crap full of unproven assertions. So yeah, that's why, since you asked.

Except they don't.

They just dodge any reference to facts and reality.

Like how apparently sponsors will come from all around the country...Even though that doesn't happen with any other team on nearly the scale required.

It's really just wishful thinking that people like to pretend are facts.

At the end of the day, the population, demographics and economy of Tas, now, and more particularly in the future are just unable to support a club at the level required, so the only prospect for a Tas team is for it to be a charity case forever more.

You like to pretend everything you just wrote is fact, but the truth is, you don't know. You can't perceive your own bias because your arguments are so compelling to you. That's ok, you can have your compelling ideas, but there are a lot of people who see this issue differently. And until it is put to the test, your ideas have no more proof of reality than anybody else's.

There's no real merit to either end of the argument really because we can only speculate.

At one end it's a fair speculation that the population doesn't hold enough weight to support it's own team, now and future forecasts.

At the other end it's highly likely that if Tas had their own team that the whole state would get behind it and would certainly not need babysitting to the extent of a new GC or GWS or any new team in non footy territory really. Would HQ need to siphon the same amount as the most recent experiments? Highly unlikely but not impossible.

Unless anyone on this thread takes the time out to research how much $$ goes into starting up a new club in a traditional footy state (if those numbers are made publicly available) then really anyone is just speculating and making arguments for and against based on assumptions.

What is certain and what madmug stated earlier, not having a team in Tas will not help grow the game at grass roots level. Would having a team have a positive effect? Logic would tell you it's likely but again we can only assume yay or nay.

So on that last sentence, if HQ want to keep interest in the game in Tas at some point - regardless of economic viability - they're gonna have to roll the dice and invest.

Have the northern teams been a financial success? F*** no, but you and I and everyone's goldfish knows that is / was not the intent.

Can't argue with any of that. It's all speculation. What I can't abide is over-confident statements and prognostications.

What would happen is both teams remove 2 forwards and only players with elite endurance get picked

Oh, I realise I can't predict the future, but the numbers I provide do provide for the (far) more likely outcomes.

Who knows, maybe they'll discover an oilfield off the coast so rich that even their (heavily Greens influenced) government allows it to be developed, and Tas becomes the wealthiest part of the country, people flock there in droves and there is so much money 2 teams are formed...

But I think I'll stick with the more likely scenarios.
