TAS Tassie... happening?

Why? It's my opinion. I believe the sun is hot too. Do i need to prove that?
That's not going to be enough to dissuade the AFL from expanding to 19 or 20 teams.

Surely no more than 18 teams? The standard of football has already dropped to an all time low! Would love to see Tassie in the AFL. Deserves to be in the comp. But the talent is already spread so thin across the competition with grass roots football also struggling. So talent coming through will likely get thinner and thinner. In a perfect world, we'd only have 12 sides and Tassie should be one of them..

It’s a temporary issue. Australia’s population is expanding quite quickly. And the AFL have set themselves up to take advantage of it, mostly through their second clubs in NSW and Qld.

Population is growing by about 300k every year. That’s a new current population of Melbourne over 15 years.

Will they be called the Devils or is that too close to the Demons? Or will they be given some **** franchise name like the Suns or the Giants?
Or another (mostly) Tasmanian animal. Quolls (largely Tas but foind in Vic and SA as well) or Padememlons. Its highly unlikely there will be a team anyway, but probably Devils if there is.
I just hope they don't go with a BS name. I can see the AFL trying to be all "cutting edge" (i.e. worst of the NBA) and going with the Tassie Freeze.

In a 12 team national competition starting from scratch you might fit a team for Tassie, maybe. In an 18 team competition, Tassie should be part of it.

Given we started with the VFL, clearly the brief is to keep the weakest of them afloat at any cost. The fact that the AFL is supposedly a national competition its completely conflicted.

They talk the 'corporate' talk, & then put on their parochial 'socialist' hat on to act as a life jacket for the VFL clubs, at any cost. Then the move to NSW & Qld is for players & Media money. Strengthening the AFL is fine, but it should be more than just Melbourne & its economy & what the AFL can take from regional areas. They seem to think China is more important than their own back yard.

Yes they think its cold here. Try playing in winter in Penrith, Ballarat or Canberra.

But FFS its a winter sport. I mean really, how many bad weather days have you seen when AFL clubs play here? Snow? no, Slushy bog holes? no, Wind, yes. But not nearly as much as at Williamstown!! ;)

If tassie split the games 6-5 hobart-launy, would it be weird as a local in either city to onlybe able to go to a game once a month during the season?
Yes but if they had all the games in one city half the population would not be able to go at all. They have to good mid sized stadiums. Use them. Only 200km.

There's been some prety nasty winds at Bellerive, and fog at York Park. Hobart's air temp near the river at night is no colder than much of Melbourne's. Lonny does drop below zero in mid-winter but daytimes is normally not that different to Melbourne (except on days where the fog rolls in and doesn't lift).
They both drain well, so even when the rain hits (and Hobart doesn't get a lot of heavy rain) they're both playable. Moreso than the surface at Docklands often becomes despite its protections. Launceston does get heavy rain, but probably rains less than Melbourne and I can't recall York park ever being a boghole - one area in front of the old scroeboard before the ground was done up used to get that way, but that's about it. (Amazing for a ground built on a rubbish tip on a swamp.)
If the NRL can have North Queensland play night matches in Canberra, the AFL can handle having Vic sides play night games in Launceston. Weather isn't an issue.

We haven't rally cottoned onto the ocean theme in the AFL - I think the Tassie Trumpeters would be pretty good. An iconic fish, and a cheer squad full of men and women playing trumpets. What's not to love?

Don’t know about the overall standard but I get the feeling goal kicking is worse than ever. So many guys miss from 20-30m out. It’s a huge blight on the game

I have a theory on this - I don't think it's that we're lacking talent. Any of us who've watched state league regularly know that there's a lot of talent out there that could and should be playing AFL.

The worsening goal kicking is down to 3 things, 2 of which are well known:

1) In a code where everyone is now a finely tuned athlete, more than ever what's happening between the ears becomes a factor. And that self-perpetuates. Goal kicking becomes worse because in a game where so much equal, goal kicking is much higher pressure.
2) Despite being finely tuned athletes, they still have physical limitations, and physical exhaustion must impact on goal kicking.

The third element of my thought process is just down to the evolution of the game. For over 100 years your best kicks were in the forward line, and your crabs were down back. Over the last 15 or so years, given how the game has evolved, it's turned on its head. Goal kicking is bound to be worse than it's been in the past, because the best kicks are now down back, and crab kicks are now playing forward.

Definitely think your third point is very valid. Most teams had a gun, dead eyed dick in front of goals that was kick a fair percentage of the teams goals. As you said now a lot of defenders and mids are having shots and they are just no good

As a young AFL player with a fair bit of coin, what would be the attraction of living full time in Hobart/Launceston over Melbourne, Sydney, Perth ect?

GC beach weather doesn't seem to do it either. Lots of sand, pubs & clubs too. Whats your take on that? Canberra is frigid in winter but has NRL & RU teams, doing well at the moment. Dis they recruit polar bears?

GWS play there too so the Canberra cold can't be much of a problem. Penrith in Sydney gets plenty of minus temperatures in winter but guys live there, play & don't end up with hypothermia every week.

I've been to Geelong a number of times. Stayed with friends for a while at one stage. Seen a few games. Some played in rain, one in torrential rain & yes it gets cold too. Geelong is a great town. People like living their. It wouldn't be dissimilar to Hobart in some respects. , not cafe's, clubs & pubs surely?

Surely the attraction is that of being a professional sportsman. Unlike some places, we have a strong footy culture. Does that make a difference? I think it must. Do you?

Please tell me what specifically does Melbourne have? More night clubs, more pubs, more Cafes? How many is good enough? How many pubs do players want? Maybe ask Daisy Thomas.;)

Melbourne is a big city & growing, as is Sydney. They get the bulk of immigrants. Growth stimulates economic activity & that encourages more growth. The problem being the crowding & commuting which is the bane of both places. Has that translated into bigger clubs in Melbourne? Some maybe. But others have lagged behind & struggle without massive handouts. Looking at the history of attendances one can see the crowds of some clubs don't appear to have not kept pace with the growth of Melbournes population. So what's their future? Bigger handouts? Force immigrants to games?

Anyway the recent efforts here to start the push for entry to the AFL has some well qualified business people. Headed by a guy who co founder Virgin blue.

Hopefully dumping Hawthorn & North can happen & we get some equity in our football. The thing we can't beat is the politics of the AFL & its Viccentric focus. Historically that was the effect of the VFL on Tasmania. It was take take take. This place, like Vic Country was just seen as a cabbage patch. But they've been drained & left to rack & ruin.

The recent push for u18 & VFL teams is just a return to what they tried near 20 years ago & failed. Not from lack of support. It was from lack of direction from the AFL. They made it, They fkt it.

So much for the care of the game.

If they’re

Well run

Professional

Successful (I don’t mean winning the flag every year, but being in contention often etc etc)

Then they’ll retain players.

Players don’t leave good environments at a high rate.

So its not the temperature, the beers, nor the Latte's that make the difference then.

So its about the footy culture then.

Who'd've thunk that!!! ;)

I hear what you're saying, but in amongst that whole post you didn't actually address the question. If you can't work out "specifically" what is more appealing about living in Melbourne than Launceston than there's probably no point having a conversation about it, it's all pretty obvious.
Am i saying EVERY single player would prefer Melbourne, Sydney, Perth over Tassie? No I'm not, but there is a reason these places are densely populated and thats becomes a majority of the population likes living in big cities.
As for Geelong, Penrith ect, I think Hobart is a way better place, but they are also only an hour drive from the 2 biggest cities in the country.

They’d lose players like all clubs. But would they lose all players? No. Players choose Brisbane and Adelaide over Melbourne and Sydney. Hell even GWS has a good record of recruiting mature players and they’re out in the middle of nowhere. Deledio and the like jumped on board because they thought they’d have a shot at a flag.
