What is the policy on long hair? Seems like the only place I've seen long haired soldiers is in the movies. Same for coppers.

For the Navy when you joined, everyone was given a number 2 with the clippers. After that it had to be maintained short and neat. If you went shorter than a number 2 and it was really noticeable, you would be restricted to base until it grew back to a more suitable level ie if you lived off base with a wife / husband and a couple of kids, you weren't allowed home to see them until it grew back. Only allowed to shave your head if you had a medical reason with a certificate.

As far as long hair goes, it would depend where you were and what you were doing.
