General rule with tattoos - if its a 'trend' (ie, chinese writing, barbed wire around bicep) stay clear.. You cant tell me barbed wire tattoos look cool now can you? Ala Makepeace when he was running around with the Kangaroos.

The chinese writing will go down the same path. Those that have it under their bicep are probably better off though than those who have it on their forearm.

Chinese Writing (if your chinese of maybe speak the language its ok), Tribal Tattoo's (if your not from a tribe/tribal heritage) and Southern Cross stars are the most pointless lame fairy tattoos ever. Whoever gets one is a downright idiot trendy hippie loser and needs to take a good hard look at themselves.
your a ******** mate. I have a southern cross tattoo on my ribs and it is there because it means something to me.

All of you numbskulls who criticise people for having tattoos should think about this, they dont care in the slightest what chumps like you think. And there tattoos may mean something to them.
I hate the thought that everyone has to do something original. Being original for the sake of being original is in my opinion a form of conformism

I didn't know the Southern Cross one was a popular thing, I'd contemplated getting one, didn't want to get a flag cos of the Union Jack. I've only ever seen one person with a Southern Cross (it looked good incidentally) so now I'm leaning towards getting the Coat of Arms done instead.

You'd wanna get that tat a pretty decent size with all that detail or in 10 years time parts of it will be likely hard to recognise. But it would look pretty damn sweet. All i can say is make sure you go to a very good tattooist, there are too many average jobs around unfortunately.

Going by your post it seems like you do care what people think.

Chris Bryan has a large tattoo on his shoulder blade, not sure what of.
Harry O got a tattoo of South Africa on his back/shoulder blade when he went over there last year. I think it's on the CFC website.

What I mean is that I dont care what people may think of my tat but this attitude that people cant do something because other people do it aswell shits me up the wall.
Maybe some of the people who have chinese characters think that they are meaningful. Just because loads of people have it doesnt it mean that they do it purely to look trendy.

What the hell could this possibly mean?

You would better off getting Peannut Tattooed accross your forehead.

What's wrong with being trendy, fashionable, whatever-you-call-it anyway? What's wrong with wanting to fit in, and be a part of a group?

If you are interested in fashion, enjoy researching latest trends, why not?

OK, I promise I won't have a go at you out for getting a tatt because you think Chinese Letters are cool and meaningful, if you don't have a go at people who get a tatt because they want to be trendy. It's their choice.

... my ex-housemate had one of those. look OK but he wussed out and had it 3/4 of the way round his arm rather than the full way!
General rule is if tatts are done good and mean something to the person it's no-one else's business WHAT they have.
I personally think the Southern Cross Tatt looks quite good actually. The problem with the flag is that if we do become a republic they'll change it.

I just remember the day when I was a 15 year old kid and one of my dad's mates who had a heap of tatts warned me against them. He said whilst it looked cool and 'tough' when he was young the older he got the more he regretted ever having the tatts done. I always remember this conversation when I think about tatts.

southern cross is so common and un-original. by the way, getting the union jack on its own could look funny - people would think you're a pom, but getting just the aussie flag, i dont see the problem with that? so it's got the union jack in it? that has more historical relevance to our country than the southern cross. sure the southern cross is symbolic, but in terms of meaning to our country's past, the union jack holds more significance. the thousand of diggers who died for us fought for not only australia, but our mother country - the union jack. i dont know why people are so ashamed of the union jack, it's part of who we all are and where we've come from as aussies. sure country's evolve but that doesnt mean you have to forget your past or erase it from your future. i count myself as aussie as i come and i love our flag and our history that it represents.

Sometimes a tat has nothing to do with history, more about pride and honour. The thousands of diggers that died for us were singing a national anthem that has now changed. Not saying or meaning any disrespect at all, just as you say, things evolve.
Personally, I love my history, nation and all its people. Some screw their nose up at this but I want to get the John Williamson representation of our flag tattooed somewhere....

It may look boring but to me it means everything to me.:thumbsu:
This flag was a candidate a while ago along with true blue as a new anthem, love them both.

......... and I've never regretted getting them at all.

Go figure?

There is a thread in the geelong board with fan tattoo's.

Some are quite good.

I think if you are sure about a tattoo then go for it. You can always get them removed right?
