A very impressive debut. Wouldn't be surprised if we have another NAB rising star in Doc. Makes it very difficult for Cheney to get back in.

I loved his attack on the ball. He can crunch packs......
That is what has stood out for me this season. For the past few seasons, he has been at best solid at BHH. This year he is really taking the game on. Dunno who has gotten into his head, great work by our development guys.

It was identified as a major shortcoming and limitation for his projected role at Hawthorn. We didn't want an undersized lockdown small defender who doesn't take the game or opposition on. It's interesting (and very pleasing) to see how quickly he has adapted the new mindset into his game.

To leave his direct opponent, in order to back into the leading KPF knowing:
a) He'll get crunched, and
b) His opponent is now unmarked

Takes guts. Go half-hearted and the KPF still marks the ball. Merely compete and the ball drops to your opponent. He went back, took the hit, and put enough force into the spoil to clear the immediate area.

For a debutant, it's exceptional.

His hardness at the contest surprised me. If he can get the fumbles out of his game looks like a pretty handy small defender. Has a great leap, moves okay and even in his first game his kicking stood out. Also looked to handle the level very well in his first game. Give him another 20 games and then we'll see if we have a player. But a promising debut.

I think he was already playing hard and tough at the end of last year. One of his best games was his game against the cats in the final last year (VFL). We lost the game but he was one of the best on for us

Does he generally have good hands ? He did fumble badly a few times but first game nerves can do that.

Ease up dude FFS it was the kids first game and in case you did not notice the ball was slippery for a fair bit.
Yeh for sure but watching the game I didn't think he did that well. Honestly was surprised that everyone on here is raving. I didn't think he was awful, but just what you'd expect from a first gamer

You're right. Great finals series. His game against Sandy was highlighted by great precision kicking & decision making. Game against Geelong was probably the hardest game I had seen him play, marks, great closing speed to spoil & a feature was also his very good kicking out.
The challenge now which will come with more game time at the elite level is to obtain a good balance of offensive as well as defensive possessions & impact. He has it all just has to put it all together. I'm confident he will get there.

Nice read. I assume one next step for him is to be trusted to kick-out, which i don't think he did last week.

Possibly a bit early! Give him a few more games I would think. Clarko has dropped Anderson & Duryea into huge first games. Sink or swim philosophy?! Once he can demonstrate he can back up the composure he may share these duties.

Duryea appears to have a higher ceiling in terms of scope for further development so if he gets a good run in the seniors and plays consistently Cheney may not get much opportunity this year other than as a cover for injury.

Nobody's saying he broke the game open but he did well for a first gamer.

His outstanding vertical leap will also come in handy given that we still have a height problem at times.

Also snuck forward for a looong shot at goal. Good signs when a defender can do that.

Good kudos just to be playing in the Hawks oufit with one of the strongest and most attacking HB lines in the comp. Gives us another playmaking option out of defence and I think he will give us enough in our strcutures to help cover the loss of Suckers.

Hope he holds his form for a couple more weeks and then a rest and maybe give Cheney a crack.

Cheney is very stiff as he could be one of the better small, lockdown defenders in the game if we gave him games. Now he has Duryea added to the list of guys making his spot that much harder to earn. Gone from paper thin to fat as butter in our backline depth.

I wonder if Duryea was another reason Murphy decided to go. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall with the progress of Duryea, not that Murph was getting gifted games but it would have left him in the same boat as Cheney, thinking the 5 - 10 games he had been getting were now under threat.

Can anybody tell where Taylor hails from please?
TAC for Murray Bushrangers...

Don't know what town he's from though...

Needs to improve his decision making and composure which will surely improve as he gets more experience and accustomed to the speed of the game in the top level. We got a good prospect in this one though

The debut game was a real baptism of fire, in conditions that weren't the best for a guy who's undoubtedly going to be a bit nervous and fumbly. I thought that he had a solid game, regardless of this. The step up from VFL to AFL is always going to get to debutants, but his attack on the ball and ability to get into the right spot was great. Whether by design or not, we didn't shy away from giving him the ball either, which shows him that there's a belief in him from his teammates.

Once he gets 10-15 games under his belt I think( or hope) he'll start to flourish and take the game on a bit more. He has a good defensive mindset, but a really attacking weapon in his footskills. After being so close to getting a call up last year, it's great to see him rewarded so far this year, and showing so much promise.

You'll get no arguments from me Echols! Thought he has played 3 very solid games. Was clearly the most effective disposer yesterday, only 1 error which obviously was the kick out of bounds. For his 3 games is running at 80% efficiency.
Not quite sure what people were referring to with his mistakes and composure yesterday given his efficiency. I think he looks very composed.
As you say he is very strong defensively and his next step will be to add more offensive run. Probably as his fitness at this level increases, that ability will as well making him a very valuable contributor and adding to team balance and options.

I think confindece will be the key at the moment he would worried about his spot in the side and just following the coaches instructions and doing so with a minimum of fuss as he feels more comfortable and gains in confidence watch him release those left foot bullets.

Great contested grab in defence last night, very composed every time he had the ball. He is definitely a Goo replacement in the waiting.

He is a solid boy too, huge through the core and legs. Almost as big as Goo already in the thighs and calf muscles.

Is it wrong that I noticed that

I like the fact that Duryea has strong defensive skills already and a mature body that can absorb some physical punishment.

I hope he gets a run of games (hopefully about a dozen games in the H&A season) so that he feels more settled and hopefully ready to make a strong contribution in the finals if required.
