Milburn wasn't there was he? and as I said, Harley's job isn't to man up on the full forwards. He's supposed to be 3rd (or if we've got the players in the contest, 4th) man up.

How often does he take the marks and feed off in those situations? That's what he's there for and what we need him to do. To suggest that because he doesn't actively choose to go one up with a FF, and is a poorer player for it is just ludicrous.

How many do you think Hall would have got if Harley wasn't going in as 3rd man up last night??

Well I can't recall Harley cutting off Hall once last night so that point is irrelevant.

The question in Harley's mind would have been 'how many goals will Hall kick if I go to him'. The answer? I shutter to think. :o

Well what else did you want Harley to do then?

I can see that a loose man in defense has space to attack, therefore should have great disposal... Harley's is possibly the worst in the team(when Byrnes isn't there). No penetration with disposal + no run off half back either??? Whats the good of him loose?

Yes his disposal isn't the best but that's not the point. He reads the play so well that he can get back and help eg Scarlett on the dangerous key forward or anytime the ball is bombed inside 50. I think that is why he's so good.

That and his leadership.

Edit: And he's not loose - he has an opponent but his ability to read the play so well allows him to pick when to go and help a teammate out or when to stay with his opponent.

He didn't have an opponent for a lot of the time last night and geez, I think we'd all agree that Taylor could have used some help...

That's the key. His disposals don't need to be superb because he's the first chain in the link of the rebound plays. He's there when you say to yourself 'oh we could be in trouble here' Harley marks- handballs off- problem averted.

I wasn't talking about last night but generally. Milburn is usually the loose man in defence but as we all know he wasn't out there last night.

Taylor will be better for the experience.

What it shows is a gross lack of leadership from Tom Harley also. + it demonstrates the fact that Harley never has / will be a true key position defender. Harley's strength is not his disposal, yet he chose to play loose man in defense while Taylor(lighter/smaller) was left to take Hall all game. Taylor is a far superior kick to Harley also and could have been more damaging as that loose player.

I know I'll get flamed for suggesting so, but why does Harley shrug best opposition forwards? Especially in '08, soft. Never goes to them.... And why? It's not like he's terribly useful with his disposal when playing loose??

Scarlett is a massive out us... MASSIVE! I know his leadership is good, but Harley merely makes up the numbers in defense. He's too one dimensional and should have done the right thing by taking Hall when he was dominating us.

Should really let this go but this is close to the WORST post I've ever read on BF. Wrong in so many respects that I don't have time to list them eg Harley chooses his opponent/role . It's obvious that you are young (euphemism) but even then I'm dumbfounded by your ridiculous opinion of Harley.

What - you're having a lend? Okay then.

i remember that game in 2005 where bomber kept Matty Egan on Jono Brown pretty much all day, it certainly helped his development!...and even though it's up to the individual in question...everything we've seen from Harry would suggest he will be a better player for the experience.:thumbsu:

Wasn't Robert Walls a nob.....all he could do was have a crack at Taylor.

Like Hall hasn't torn many defenders a new one ever before.

Robert Walls you are a disgrace.

I know this isn't a thread about Robert Walls but did anybody hear his comment at 1/2 time, we were 22pts up and RW said that "Bomber has alot of work to do at 1/2 time to get his cats up!!!! WTF!!"

I am in the middle ont his - no pun intended. I though harley started to drop back to help out taylor out after half time,. but not so much in the first half. Skipper did look a little uncomfortable to me, but without Dasher and Scarlett that can be understood. And definitely agree leaving taylor on him all night was a wise move. JOsh Hunt i thought actually had astrong game, keepig Goodes right out of the play. No touches until 23 minutes into the first, after promising a goal blitz? stooge..........and well done Josh. Also Shannon Byrnes- really pushing to keep his spot, i thought he was great!! And damn the consequences of that statement!

and didnt he also say something along the lines that taylor is the only weak link in the geelong team.

The strength of the attacks on Harley from Josh Hunt fanbois is directly proportional to the pressure on Josh to keep his spot in the side.

Oh sorry, how dare I question Harley's performance.. He is the perfect player, perfect captain etc. etc.

They were scoring the teams tonight on Foxsports in order to compare them against the Brisbane team of (i think) 2002. They gave Taylor 4/10.

I think we talked a bit about this in one of the other threads. I honestly was wondering if they were watching the same game as me. The Cats have consistently played better all year after half time and were 22 points up at that stage. It was always going to get really, really ugly.
