Star North Football Club junior Taylor Walker looks set to complete a "dream" entry into the AFL after he was added to the Adelaide Crows' playing list yesterday.
The Crows made the announcement that Walker would be joining the club late yesterday afternoon as part of Adelaide's NSW Scholarship Program.
Walker was added to the club's program in May 2006, and quickly repaid the faith shown in him with standout performances up forward in both the local and TAC Cup competitions.
As part of the program Adelaide were able to priority list the talented 190cm youngster in exchange for their sixth round pick in the upcoming draft.
Walker said he was contacted by Crows' Recruiting Manager Matt Rendell and Senior Coach Neil Craig about his selection, and was left in a state of disbelief.
"They told me at around 3.30, and at the start I didn't really believe it, it didn't really click, but then Matt Rendell said 'We're taking you' and that was it," he said.
"I thought they were going to hang onto me for another year in the scholarship because I hadn't really heard too much from them.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet. Neil Craig just rang me and said congratulations and told me I had some hard work ahead of me, and said 'See you at pre-season.'"
A lifelong avid Crows supporter, Walker said the opportunity to play for Adelaide was a dream come true.
"It's awesome, it's amazing, I don't know what else to say," he said.
"I've always barracked for them, ever since I was a kid - It's a dream."
Father Wayne Walker said his family was elated with the news, and hoped Taylor would grasp his opportunity and hopefully cement a place in the Crows' forward line in the near future.
"Mum and Dad are very excited and his brother and sister - it's a great opportunity for him," he said.
"Even though he's on the list the ball is in his court though, it all comes down to how much he wants to work... there's a real opportunity for him to get in and mix it."
Adelaide also appeared pleased to see the 17-year-old making the transition to AFL via their club, with Crows General Manager - Football Operations John Reid saying the club was keen to get Walker into their system.
"We've upgraded him, he's had a very demanding season, a lot of football, and we think he's handled it very well," he said.
"We could have kept him on the scholarship for another year, but we think for his development, for him to go to the next level it'd be better if he's on our list and we get him down here and get him going."
Reid said Walker would have been a likely prospect had he entered into the draft, and said he was pleased the scholarship system had allowed him to land at the Crows.
"He'd have been very reasonable. I won't go into the exact science of it but he'd have been very draftable, so we added him to our list - and that's what the scholarship program is for," he said.
"We're really pleased to have him on board, he's a very good young man."
Walker flew to Adelaide last night and will meet with Crows officials today for fitness screening and a medical check.

Staker wasn't that great up here, heaps of players better than him, the talk was the only way he got into the Rams was because his father knew the right people.
He blossomed there no doubt, but he didn't show a hell of a lot with his time up here.
Solomon was a star up here, dominated senior games even at age 15-16. Walker does that now as well.
Seems like the upside of Walker is that he is only 17 but has been dominating it against men, as well as in the TAC Cup. And no signs of any injuires? Bloody hell. Give him number 2, we might get someone decent to wear it for once.

I was reading their board before and Pick 60 was the number being thrown about. I assume that's their 3rd pick, but it's a 4th rounder and the last pick they'll use?

The swans haven't delisted anybody yet. They have off loaded Schneider and Dempster and received Mattner and Playfair. So at the moment their potential draft picks are 11, 26 (from Saints), 60, 76 and 92.

Not sure but since he is an All Australian under 18 player who is only 17 and is just on 190 cm, at very least a late first rounder early second rounder.
Somewhere between pick 10 and 25 would be a uneducated guess.

The fact that he's very underage counts against him a bit.
In the 30's is probably a fair assumption for a player of his age.

Not to mention dominate TAC Cup matches. He sounds like an absolute bargain of a pick up, now we've got to develop him properly.

Or going by our track record not get a game for 2 years and we end up losing him for nothing.
I think they should play hime from day 1, he will struggle for abit but how else do you learn.

Hopefully BU that isnt the case... playing against men he would be used to it ... I would mark him as a project player and look to get 3-5 AFL games in 2008...huge call I know but I think the fact he has already played out of age will count...plus I like what I see in his eyes
