We currently have 5 players eligible for veteran listing - Goody & McLeod (already listed), Edwards, Burton & Doughty.

Not sure what the cutoff date is though - whether a player has to be 30 before the start of the season, or turning 30 during the course of the season.

If it's the latter, then Shirley will be eligible next year - otherwise he'd have to wait until 2011.

Of the remainder:
* Johncock & Hentschel turn 30 during the 2012 off-season, so they're eligible for listing from 2013. Gill also turns 30 around the same time, but won't qualify under the 10 year listing rule - and he'll be long gone by then anyway.
* Bock, Thompson & Rutten turn 30 during the 2013 season.
* Reilly turns 30 during the 2013 off-season, so he'd be eligible in 2014.

In terms of age, Stevens would be next in line after Shirley - but he only joined the club at the end of 2003, so he doesn't qualify for long service leave until 2014 (provided he lasts that long).

The rest are so far away it's not worth contemplating.

Oh well apparently Burton has re-signed for one year. Will be interesting to see how this effects Walker going into trade week knowing that other clubs want him and will actually play him next year whereas he is most probably going to play second fiddle for another year to "Mr Speccie" :thumbsd:

Seriously, can you shut up about the Walker trade stuff?

You've read an article with nothing concrete, nothing but bullshit rumour and innuendo, and now you're fixated on it.

Walker isn't going anywhere - from what I've heard, he absolutely loves it here; and considers the thought of another Club even approaching him to be pretty amusing.

Well I am frigging panicking about it !!!!!!!

Well, I wouldn't mate - seriously, the Crows aren't going to even contemplate trading away the best young forward we've had since Modra - who is already a fan favourite.

And Walker apparently loves the Crows, loves Adelaide - he's playing for the team he's been in love with his entire life, he'll be in our starting 22 next year and will make the position his.

I wouldn't bother if I were you. Walker isn't going anywhere. And frankly, he'll probably be picked in the 22 before Burton next year anyway.

I really really really REALLY hope your right.

If he and/or Tippett left the club I don't know what i'd do...

Realistically, Walker is only behind Tippett, Hentschel, Burton. Maybe depending on structure NC will go with a pinch hitter like Stevens, making space for Davis in defence or something like that. But we'll be very lucky to make it through a season without Hentschel or Burton spending considerable time on the sidelines. Just as likely, Walker will push his way past one of them on form. Walker will at least play as many games in 2010 as he did in 2009.

Here's a quick statistical look at the Season 2009 performance of Taylor Walker compared to Burton/Hentschel (don't know how many games they played but I am assuming TW = BB + TH).
  • Goals: TW 23; BB/TH 20
  • Disposals: TW 110; BB/TH 97
  • Marks: TW 56; BB/TH 34
  • Tackles: 25; BB/TH 12 (!!!)
I reckon Taylor is already a better performer than the other two and with another pre-season will improve more at his age than either Burton or Hentschel notwithstanding their injury history.

For me case closed - Walker has to play in 2010.

I can not believe some people on here are contemplating suicide at the thought of Walker being traded away. There is no chance that will happen. Let him get another pre-season under his belt, he should have the hunger after having a taste this year, and watch him fly next year for the Crows.

Bigfooty is absolutely ridiculous at times. Seriously.

(don't know how many games they played but I am assuming TW = BB + TH).
You'd be wrong then. Walker played about 50% more games than Burton+Hentschel. (14 vs 5+5)

Adjust for that, and Walker did not better (slghtly worse) than the other 2 in 2009.

That doesn't mean he shouldn't play more games in 2010, it doesn't mean he isn't the future beyond BB & TH.

But when you're on our club's list you don't get picked on "potential".

?
Burton and Hentschel played 7 games each...
Did you forget to count the finals?

Weren’t you going to join Drummond suicide pack of Chris Knights left? :p

You are right :o
Silly me for relying on the club's own website for my stats.

OTOH I think sydney_crow's Burton+Hentschel stats are for the 5 games only, not including the finals, so my point stands.

I don't think you can mount a statistical case that Walker > Burton/Hentschel.

When has Tex ever been picked on potential? He had to spend an entire year in the SANFL kicking nearly 60 goals before he got his debut. This has surely never happened with a player in our history before him. Jesus Christ, he had 40 odd shots on goal in his first dozen AFL games despite getting moderate amounts of game time, starting nearly every quarter on the bench and generally not being the no.1 target inside 50. Any suggestion that he's got games just on potential is a bit of an insult to the kid. I can't be arsed looking up the records, but it would be interesting to know if any other tall forward in recent memory has a record over their first dozen games that compares with Tex's. Yes he has some rough edges to work on but what young player doesn't? It's nothing terminal or as disastrous as some on here make it sound.

Now that it's done and dusted I'm prepared to accept that this was a development year for him (yet another one), but if a forward line spot isn't his to lose from round 1 next year (assuming his work in the pre-season is up to snuff), then we are going down the wrong track and it will be extremely bad management, despite what the club apologists seem to think.

Shirley came back into the team because the youngsters lining up ahead of him all fell out of form - primarily Cook & Petrenko, both of whom went back to the SANFL and rarely even made the emergency list after that.

would you like to buy a bridge?

Cook & petrenko didn't have any form to fall out of.

That pretty much seemed like it was proven correct the whole season, to be honest. Shirley was told he needed to develop another weapon in his game, which he really didn't do. Consequently, he was recalled sporadically to be a tagger, a role at which he was then beaten at by Doughty and consequently barely played the rest of the season. Eventually, he made it into the side but only when other players fell away.

Basically Craig was saying at the start of the year that Shirley needed to do more to be in the best 22. He didn't, and so he wasn't, relying on injuries or form lapses from other players to get a go.

so what happened at selection in the finals, with virtually a full list to choose from? exactly as Carl had predicted weeks earlier.

Agree 100 % great post :thumbsu:

I go away for 2 weeks, and come back to find our season over, and this forum delisting everyone over 28 and surmising that everyone under 22 is going to ask for a trade because they haven't gotten the games their potential rightfully deserved.

You people amuse me in a very sad and repetitive way, at times.

Walker got all the games he earned, and he isn't going anywhere. So did all the other younger brigade. In fact, I'd say the only one who did not get all the games he earned is McKernan, short at least one earned game courtesy of a broken arm. That's all.

Maybe you need to brief yourself on an article speculating that Essendon and Collingwood could be getting in his ear to leave the Crows.

Could we conceivably have this forward line starting next year?

Knights - Hentshel - Porplyzia
Burton - Tippett - Walker

Or even..

Knights - Tippett - Edwards
Porplyzia - Walker - Burton ??

The first is a bit top heavy and the second sees Tippett out of FF.. which i don't like.

Can Burton and Walker play in the same forward-line?
