As a pure stopping defender, Hooker.

As an attacking, rebounding defender, Pears.

They play different roles but in an ideal world, both injury free and in good form, they are a formidable combination in defence.

Hooker is a better one-on-one defender against the bigger types.

BUT

In terms of influence to the side, a fit and firing Pears makes our defence 100% better.

His composure, decision making, rebounding and foot skills are a huge, huge asset.

Think about the times when Pears is on fire, we generally come out on top.

Think it might also not be a complete coincidence that we began to concede much bigger scores around the time Hooker got injured. About Round 13/14 right?

Hooker is possibly more important in terms of structure.

Pears is a more complete footballer though. Find it almost impossible to split the two of them, to be honest.

I love them both as defenders, and obviusly they bring different skill sets to the table - as i've stated on another post Hooker is "better" imo because he will be more important in winning a premiership.

To win footy deep in September it's critical to curb the big forwards with extreemely good core strength, especially with the increased number of long balls that are put to their advantage due to increased upfield pressure.

Maybe Pears wins if we're only talking home and away footy, but a season including 3 or 4 finals, i'll take Hooker just.

For me, Hooker is a better defender because he's just that, a defender. Has 5cm and 5kg over Pears ATM, and a stronger mark. Can play his man well too.

Pears is a more complete player. Played some great footy down back, but would love to seem him used further up the ground. With Hardy now in defence, give Pears a midfield run.

I really disagree with those saying Hooker is better one on one.

The things that Hooker has over Pears, IMO:

- Height
- Reach
- Reading of the flight

The things that Pears has over Hooker, IMO:

- Positioning
- One on one ability
- Strength
- Spoiling
- Rebounding ability
- Skills
- Composure

Hooker should be stronger, but he's really not.

Pears has monstered the likes of Brown, Pavlich, Bradshaw, Tippett, Fevola, Roughead. All big, strong lads.

Hooker gets out bodied by the likes of N Riewoldt and Franklin. He's been getting destroyed by Cloke for a few years now, long before he became the man mountain he is in 2011.

I think Pears is better at full back, while Hooker is good at CHB where he can peel off his man and take the marks from opposition kicks. Prior to his injury he was one of the leading players in the league for marks from opposition kicks which is a fairly important stat. IMO it would be silly to trade either of them becasue there is not much cover if one or both go down with an injury.

If I had to choose one it would probably be Pears but it depends on what else you have around the side.

Injury free it's Pears.

TBH they both scare the crap out of me. Hooker now covers the ground worse than Myers and Pears is made of glass.

They do complement each other pretty well. Pears can play on the leading forward and Hooker plays on the gorrilla.

Hooker is a more athletic, he is stronger and taller, and hence has a better reach, he is a better mark, and has a better spoil.

Pears has poise and gives better run from back line.

When fit and firing, id take Pearsy anyday! His rebounding is a delight and although relatively small for a kpd, he out bodies the taller players.

Hooker can be a little clumsy, but is a pretty good player. Love to see both these two up and about in 2012

Pears easily. Compusure under pressure and disposal effectiveness put him a country mile ahead of Hooker. For mine, Carlisle showed enough at CHB in the last few games to go past Hooker too. Again, composure and disposal are way better than Hooker's.

Pears still carries some of his draft hype and what a good pick he was at the time.

Hooker tends to have those who knock him as he is a bit panicy with the ball in hand.

Personally i think Hooker is the best defender. Reads the ball coming into the back line better and backs himself more to get in front and take marks.

It is fair to say that both of them have had games where they should not have played in the last 2 years as their fitness due to injury was not at the required level. Both of them where bloody ordinary in the last half of this year.

I would rate Pears better with the ball and he is a better kick plus he has a bit more composure under pressure.

This thread might prove quite useful in order to know who to put on the ignore list. Tayte Pears by the length of the Flemington straight, then a couple more laps, then hoofing it to Moonee Valley in order to put another lap on Hooker.
The only thing that Hooker has over him is overhead marking. In every other area Pears simply wins.

Seems like not much has changed since this Hooker vs Pears thread of June 2010. http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=713739&highlight=hooker+pears

Pears polled 70.83% as the better defender than Hooker at 29.17%.

Interesting considering Pears spent so much time on the sidelines in the interveening period. Maybe it's Pears' lack of game time that hasn't given us much to go on in terms of making a fresh comparison.
