If I had a chocie between starting Mackay (as I am now), Beams (I have Robbo & Anthony) or Coughs, at this point (with hindsight obviously) I would take Coughlan.

Of course I've missed the boat now. No point sideways Mackay -> Cogs. But it'd have been good to pick him up.

I was reluctant because I played this stupid game last year and had Cogs in my starting team for 142k, he was wanking himself on the sidelines last year and I eventually used a trade to Ibbotson. :/

- Buddy is just far too inconsistent. The fact he can go entire quarters without a single touch (despite being on ground the whole time) is worrying.
- S.Lucas is not doing as well as I'd hoped but it's not too bad.
- Fevola was an 11th hour addition before the first round lockout. Had a poor start but he has started to make up for it.
- Hille was expensive and has been scoring low while cheaper options have been tearing it up. Another one that should pick up.

Anywhere in the top 1000 and I'd be stoked. Would like to try and crack the top 100 if things go as well as they have so far.

What have you learnt??
- Don't be a sheep and buy into the hype of the "Big Footy flock"
- Put some faith in the players you chose by not trading them out after some crappy first rounds (Adcock, Hill, Lucas, etc). It only wastes trades and it'll always come back to bite ya
- Probably just stick with Ablett as captain. Chances are he'll score big most weeks and if he doesn't then you'll find about 60%-70% of people will take the fall with you

41pos, 10tackles in VFL practise match last week
another 26pos in the VFL yesterday, i believe
i'm feeling confident he'll play seniors next week vs Melbourne.

i remember i posed the question a month ago... if Coughlan were to miss the first 2-3 games, will you still buy Mark Coughlan? everyone said no. i was adamant on YES because he's a gun capable of 90+ (potential keeper) and the fact that he was only 176k made it fairly easy to accomodate. even if he doesn't reach those heights, he's still underpriced and could gain 100k for me. it was a good risk - differentiates me from everyone else too.

According to this article, Wallace says that Coughlan most likely won't play next week & is 1-2 weeks away. He says he still needs to build up his fitness due to missing a lot of the pre-season:

I was similarly worried about role with SJ. I think he generally scores best when he plays closer to goal - unlike most - as i think he can still get plenty of marks and kicks without having to drift up the ground. IIRC in the PS there was alot of talk from geelong about him playing more outside gthe 50 - i didnt see a great increase in possessions from this, but i did see a bit of a decrease in goals scored.

Didn't watch the Grand Final last year Lakey? Johnson played exclusively in the midfield and got more possessions than any other player. I thought he'd increase to average around 95, didn't think he'd start this well though.

Fair enough. Johnson played the entire game through the midfield, racked up 34 touches IIRC, but I was particularly disappointed with his game from a non-DT perspective, as he really didn't do anything with the ball when he got it. With Ablett playing forward more often this season, Johnson is getting more midfield time, which is benefitting his scores (though this week his scores were predominantly made inside F50).

Makes sense, but I think increased midfield time, especially in Geelong's midfield, is always going to be beneficial to a player's scoring.

Lockyer - Thought he was on the way down.
McIntosh - Just liked Simmonds better. There was too much doubt on McIntosh in my eyes.

Don't want to write anyone off after 3 rounds but so far my biggest disappointments have been Simmonds and Cloke.

Why do you wish you didnt select these players?

Simmonds - Because MAC is cheaper and looks like scoring better.
Cloke - Seems like he hasn't cut out the absolute shockers from his game. Still have faith in him though.

Where do you see yourself finishing in 09??

No idea at this stage. Seems like there's a lot more competition this year. Still my goal will always be to improve on my 46th from last year.

What have you learnt??

That DT is easier than ever this year which in turn makes it harder to place well overall. Listen to me, I'm already making excuses

Expected Dal to be his usual there abouts but not elite, but with the saints flying 09 could be his year. Underestimated Lockyer and Johnson.

Why do you wish you didnt select these players? Raines and Hentschel are obvious. Browne & Spencer couldn't hold a spot and Harvey, O'keefe & Deledio have all had slow starts but i'm sure will come good.

What have you learnt? Don't pick older playes who have spent significant time out of the game.

Interesting that some of you don't consider Houlihan to be a keeper (I assume he is in your backs?).

Do you think he can't keep up his current output or are you just not happy with it? His current average is definitely enough for a keeper in the backs IMO.

I used trades to 'upgrade' the likes of Mattner/Gilbee/even Palmer last year and that ultimately burnt me. I was headed for a top 100 finish but suffered 15+ zeroes in the last 5 weeks and finished ~900th. Those 3 trades would've been very handy.
