Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

Didn’t see the game today but another poor loss at home to a team with very little chance of making the finals.

I am sick of mediocrity in our team, sick of playing guys with no chance of taking this club into the future. Guys like Doughty, Shirley, Perrie, McGregor, Welsh ect are all giving this team very little and it’s time we wielded the axe.

Will Neil Craig have the guts to wield the axe and make the changes that HAVE to be made for this team to move forward?

CUT WELSH? no no no. Shirley & Perrie yes. Welsh no.

I would like to see some youngsters have a crack though. Shirley was useless today and I am sure a young player would have done equal or if not better then him today.

Sorry Drummond ......but NO SEE GAME means you have no ability to pass any comment on any players performance

You make some very good observations about what you have seen ....don't lose you credibility by making bad observations about something you haven't seen

BTW waht did you think of Tigers 3rd shot at the 16th overnight;)

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

Yes, I missed the game today, the first time I haven't seen a Crows game in years, and therefore I have no right to pass judgement on guys I've seen week in, week out for years. Get real.

I'm not saying we should drop 5 players in the one week, but slowly ease them out and bring in youngsters who have bright careers ahead of them.

I see you would be taking the soft option at the selection table this week. Conservative much?

Ummm no, changes are needed and now. But you made a judgement call on 7 possessions to Shirley, what role was he playing? !5 possessions to Dogga 1/3 of those ineffective how can you say that YOU didnt see the game.

We just do not need to make giant wholesale changes all at once. Meesen, Gill, Sellar, Campbell all need to be looked at, and seen if the areas we are struggling are the areas that they will fill. We don't need 7 ruckmen to fill 2 positions.

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

I heard the worst possible thing to hear in the press conference. Neil Craig said that the planning for next year doesnt happen and that we arent looking to 2008 and wont until the end of the year. He said that Adelaide will continue to field the current squad regardless of the win loss ratio.

Ah what would I know, many here agree with craig's philosphy.

Why play the kids when we can continue to pump gametime into mid to late 20s players with no upside. Short term coaching is not the ideal way to go, we are seeing no much long term planning at the moment its all about today and not tomorrow.

Definately not the answer I wanted to hear, I guess some people here would be happy. Maybe we can carry these guys like Doughty etc until they are into their 30s and give them careers they wouldnt have had at other clubs.

If we dont make some hard decisions after not reaching the finals then its going to be a long denial process by the coaching staff before they wake up and realise that playing those guys with no upside isnt going to do anything except keep us from further developing our list.

Welsh, definitely.

Adelaide_Girl - I like Shirley a lot, and don't think he should be dropped, but I whoever he was on today killed him.

Seriously?

If so it's a massive case of "Oh dear"

Didn't see the game? But still are able to pass judgement on how we played, and those 5 players in particular performed???

INCREDIBLE

Name the 5 players we should bring in for them next week sunshine and how much better they will be?

Whats the point of keeping them in the side, what advantage is it to us. The season is over, guys like Doughty isnt going to magically become a match winner overnight when they have been there for years and not getting any better.

We can spend the next few years playing him and adding nothing for the future and what would that actually gain for our footy club.

And the current sqaud consists of guys like Doughty and Shirley. Unbelievable. So basically there will be minimal changes this week, despite some more awesome performances by our youngsters in the SANFL.

Doesn’t he realise that we can play some youngsters THIS year and 2007 still wouldn’t be over?

It's pointless to stress over this as nothing will change. :(

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

Priority 1 - Midfield.

The biggest issue for me, is the midfield. We have been slaughtered there when we have lost and we looked second rate through the midfield again today. In fact, we probably even looked third rate. Pfeiffer and Campbell should be looked at ahead of Doughty (who I thought was average today) and others. We need to look at starting to turn over these mediocre utility types. To turn this midfield over to replace our aging stars requires the steady injection of youth. Lets do it.

Priority 2 - Forward Line.

A group of solid battlers best describe our forward line. I'd like to see Gill have a crack sometime soon. After Meesen's efforts, perhaps he should be considered as a tall forward aswell. 3 rucks in the same game ? It's been done before, let's consider it again.

Priority 3 - Rucks.

Hudson and Maric, whilst good, still arent top tier ruckmen. Do they need time, or do we fast track the Meese in there ?

Priority 4 - Backs.

Tried hard today, but without Bassett and Truck we struggled. Obviously Hentschell wasnt an option either who probably would have been tried ahead of Bock and Kenny.

Too pissed off to write anything else at the moment.

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

If you did want to send a message then you would think that Welsh, Perrie perhaps Shirley, dogga would be dropped for Meesen (CHF), Gill (FF), Pfieffer, Campbell, etc just to emphasise the need for wearing the club jumper with pride, and having your performance reflect that pride

But it wont happen

Perhaps some of the suggestions made are over the top (eg Sack Craig) but after the performance of today and the last ten weeks, some sort of message needs to be sent to the playing group

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

You aren't giving Maric enough credit there mate. He did a lot of good things today and there's no reason why he can't become a top tier ruckman imo. In other words, it's most certainly a matter of time with Ivan.

He can be, maybe should be, but he isn't. More of an observation than being critical.

Agree completely.

A few of the players need to be reminded that Craig's faith and loyalty towards them doesn't allow them to coast without penalty.

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

Couldn't expect Maric to be top-tier right now anyway. The lad has only played a handful of games and has recently come back from a long term injury. Damn fine effort from him so far.

Fine point. Perhaps he should have played more footy last year when Biglands and Clarke were on the park ? At least he'd have a few more games under his belt.

Anyway, Maric has been fantastic since he has replaced Griffen. Hope the boy keeps up the good work.

Yes someone asked when the planning for 2008 happens and he said at the end of the year. He then went on to say that regardless of the win loss ratio he has faith in his current group of players and by his answers you can tell that he refuses to accept that the players arent good enough, if we just work on this and that things will supposedly be better . The simple fact is that we have had the same guys for far too long and we wont move ahead if we keep ignoring what is on our list and keep pumping gametime into dead wood.

And with this we head the way of the Richmond footy club.
------------------------------------------------------

Sellar will not be playing soon and rightly so. There is 'not ready' and 'not ready'.

Meesen is ready, Campbell is ready, Pfieff is pretty close.

Sellar is not. He's borderline Glenelg selection at the moment. He's certainly improving every game, but he's 'not ready' yet. He'd be killed at AFL level at the moment IMO. Give him another 3 weeks and we'll re-assess.

I'm all for playing the kids, but only if they demonstrate some good form in the SANFL. As the likes of Meesen, Campbell, Douglas and Vince have.

Re: Perrie And Welsh You Know Where The Door Is, Hope It Doesnt Hit You On The Arse On The Way Out

we'll take welshy. he'll be employed as the hairstyle coach of our side.

He and Hunter would get on famously :thumbsu:

What are you talking about Richmond ??

Too much dead wood in our side, accept it. Doughty and co will never be superstars, season is over now there is nothing to gain by pumping all the gametime into them.

Port did the right thing with Cochrane and Walsh etc thats what we need to do. We either do that or watch the side decline even futher its already happened does it take the side to totally bottom out before people realise that we need to start planning for the future now as port started to in 05, or do we wait and let our average no upside players continue to play while our side is going nowhere ???

I wasn't disagreeing with you.

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

If we're lucky doughty and mcgregor might be decent tradebait, particularly mcgregor and they certainly shouldn't play another game this year unless we have no other playable options. We can not win a premiership this year and so should start looking to increase our stocks of young midfielders who will take us forward when Goodwin, Edwards and Mcleod move on. I'm hopeful that the Bulldogs KPP stocks are so poor that they might give us something for Mcgregor and if a trade with them can be made we should absolutely do it. If Pavlich is available we should not make a serious play for him, it's too late for him to get us over the line and the young players we would have to sacrifice to get him would cripple our long-term prospects.

We can build a decent future around players like Rutten, Van Berlo, Knights, Griffen, Meeson, Hentschel (hopefully) and Douglass and that should be our goal from here on in.

Re: Perrie And Welsh You Know Where The Door Is, Hope It Doesnt Hit You On The Arse On The Way Out

Pretty harsh on Welsh IMO.

Most of the day he played out at HF and did a shitload of chasing. At least Welsh has good fundamental motor skills.....and will chase his opponent.

We are are better side with Welsh in

Re: Will we Have the GUTS to Wield the Axe?

DEFINITELY need to make some serious changes this week, for one, michael doughty is the very definition of mediocrity... plays in the thick of things week in and week out yet NEVER delivers anything more than above average.. Is not usually the worst performer of the day but offers little consistently!

Shirls still has his place in the team, at least when he's having a quiet day you can see he's still giving it everything he's got.. the attitude's right if nothing else and that's more than half the battle won! (unlike a few of his team-mates!)

Finally, there has to be some sort of radical change in our half-forward/half back positions.. you cannot play McGregor, Perrie and Bock all in the one side, they are 3 players who offer the same strengths and unfortunately all have the same noticeable short-comings! All want to play the forward role yet there's really only room for 1 of them to do this. (Even though it looks like Scott Stevens is a better prospect for this possie).

We can't afford to have Bock and McGregor making up numbers in defence like today when neither of them looked like they had any idea what/where they were supposed to be! These 3 players are all "confidence" players and when we're a team that is battling our way through we need people who can stand up and turn the game around not just get on board when the going's good... For mine McGregor & Doughty to sit this week out in the SANFL!

There's probably a few others that should be looked at but we all know anything too different is unlikely...

:thumbsu: great post

I agree with you Bock, Perrie, McGregor and Stevens are all carbon copies of each other and I also agree that Stevens at the moment is probably the best of the bunch, you can do with one or two of these guys but when you have a whole spine of them its just not good enough.
