On a positive note, I just want to applaud the players after last nights game. Not many gave us even a chance in this one, and we took it right up to them. If not for better kicking into the forward line, we might have snatched this one.

The backline was brilliant. Lead from Murphy, Marko and Lake, we really dominated over Tippett and for most of the night, Walker.

Midfield tried it's guts out all night, only the forward line is a real problem.

I think we really need to play either a Panos, Cordy or promote Campbell and play him up there, we really need to help Jones. I'm sick of seeing him get double teamed, scragged, shepparded off the ball every week, it's ridiculous. It's really like playing a lone striker in Soccer!

Thoughts gentlemen? And, I really want some positive replies for the efforts of the boys for last nights game :)

I agree that Jones, when going for a static overhead mark, often gets double-teamed with the result that he just gets shuffled off the ball and out of the contest all-together. More training in how to cope with this and perhaps another big man nearby (such as Cordy) with go a long way to ameliorating the situation.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Loved last nights game other than the result. The game plan is solid. Backline is brilliant and Marko was fantastic after getting crushed last week. Midfield absolutely dominated especially in the third. Finishing needs more polish and 100% we need another tall to clunk some marks.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Typical Bulldogs supporter attitude, constantly accepting mediocrity.
And that is also a typical bulldog supporters response, not having anything postitive to say about their team and if I sat near you at a home game, you'd be the one constantly bagging the players.

That's a crap comment. I think the whole point of the thread is that the effort last night was far from mediocre. Not winning doesn't always show mediocrity, just like winning doesn't always show brilliance.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Well said to the last two responses. I don't accept mediocrity either. But, you have to pay credit where it's due. I, like most, thought we would get smashed in this game, especially after the first quarter.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Could be a problem for us. The quality still remaining from our prelim days will prevent us from dropping all the way down. Maybe we don't need to.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

I was so proud of Markovic's game. He took last week's experience and turned it around.
We would have won the game if Jones could kick straight and Lake was on song. A couple of Lake's efforts late in the game were slightly mistimed but that will get better with every game.
I've heard that the Dogs are more concerned about the processes than results at this stage so if that's the case you'd be happy with the way they went about it.
i agree with an earlier poster, promote Campbell and get Panos in the forward line.

Not to mention more speed with Sherman and Tutt to come in.

Will people stop blaming Jones for the loss last night. He missed one shot from a difficult angle last night. I thought he did everything asked of him last night. Kicked a couple of crucial goals with limited, decent ball coming in.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

We need another target up forward. Also need to work on a forward entries.

Other than that we played pretty well considering Adelaides early form.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

I can't believe the way people bag Jones, this is only his second year ffs. He is a skinny, but very talented kid, support him out there to get some confidence otherwise like many others he will look for a bigger club with more supporters.:(

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Agree , was pretty happy with the effort last night . Really think we are on the right track with game style - agree with the additional tall forward also .
Also really think sub always should be am impact player - think Dickson is well suited or Vez , Skinner also

Give me a break. He's a big boy getting paid very well to do a job. "If we don't support him, he'll look for a bigger club with more supporters..." What a load of rubbish.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Jones suffers early because he's not used to being the number 1 target with Bazza gone. Plain and simple. The solution is time and experience to work out the rest the foward line functionality.

Might help with we played Tom Campbell who can be that first target.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

The only thing I "don't accept" is if players aren't trying.

In our past two games we have had a decent crack against two sides who are clearly better than us.

It's not accepting mediocrity, it's not being happy about losing, it's being realistic about where we are as a club at the moment.

He's not a big boy, he's still a kid that played his first game for us last year. Why don't you try and get some realistic expectations and actually support the team.

Take a look at GWS and GC, all first round draft picks with around the same experience as Jones, and tell me if there kids are playing much better than Jones?

AS for the pay, not all players are on $500,000 - only Cooney, Lake and Boyd would be on that much coin.

As for players leaving for other clubs, how come Collingwood, and co don't lose their players and we do, I think the supporters need to take a good hard look at themselves, half of you do more sledging on the team then the opposition.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Those who see no improvement on the ground and have a hissy fit over the first two losses are in for a sorry couple of years.

We have a new, NO, we have a game plan now that the players are learning. I did not expect it to look so competitive this early. I would be disappointed if the players were as brittle and uncompetitive as some supporters.

There is improvement and much more is needed. There some players still out with injury who would be in the best 22. Getting games into the younger guys and developing an uncompromising hardness must be major goal for this year. Success (a flag) will not come overnight.

I have enjoyed the first two games as small steps in the team's development. I do not accept they are playing the best footy they can yet.

He played his first game for us in 2010, not 2011. And he's a 4th year player. More than old enough to be potting goals consistently from 30m out at an angle of 30 degrees.

Having said that, I'm not having a go at him. He is a great prospect, and he could do with some more mates up forward.

Just saying we shouldn't pet him and patronise him on the offchance that he might read this board and leave the club (?!) If he's crap we have discussion boards to bag him on, just like every other club does with their crap players. But he's not crap. He's a great mark, is extremely mobile and has a dip. Has Riewoldt potential if you ask me. Happy for him to continue on his development curve.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

For the record, I too was pleased with the boys' efforts this week.

I don't have any great hopes for this year. I expect the team to struggle. My non-negotiable though is NO TANKING.

As long as they have a genuine dip I'm pleased. And i saw a genuine effort last night. I was especially pleased with Jarrad Grant. Been a long time since I've seen him put in tackling efforts like he did last night. He might yet get there.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Went last night. It was looking really ugly at times in the first half and a thrashing looked on the cards, but the 3rd quarter fightback was great. Some good signs - Lake turned back the clock, Murphy never got caught, Markovic rebounded from last week, and DJ, Dahlhaus and Griffen gave plenty of run. Also Jones battled hard, usually against 2 opponents.

More than old enough to be potting goals consistently from 30m out at an angle of 30 degrees.
If you are referring to his shot in the last quarter, that was from the pocket, more like 60 degrees.

Re: Great Effort Boys!

Ryan Hargrave, He landed awkwardly on his leg late in the last quarter.

Is he going to be fine for next week?
