Good selections IMO. Unsure what Reilly's situation is at the moment. Porps' body isn't ready. We went in very short against the Dogs in the wet. Moran should offer up a couple goals. I do agree, the pressure is on Dougie to step up for this game. Should be a ripper.

Oh, and they're just pumping McGregor's trade value Jo!

Would have bought Reilly in for Porps and Moran for Gill

I agree.

I think Gilly will probably flounder in this game and Radar's experience would have been invaluable (albeit he is underdone in matches).

The lack of Wakelin is good for Gill though as he will probably get Presti (who hopefully he should be able to handle).

Moran is a good in and gives us some good options up front. However, I worry if we are going in a touch too tall up front (even though our gameplan at the moment does tend to revolve around bombing it in to the top of the square).

Makes Porps selection in the last six weeks very puzzling. It has been said he was trying to get through to play in the finals which is really what its all about.

Make him play in pain to get to the finals and then when we are there put him in for surgery?

This will reiniforce the view that we are just happy ot make the finals and that's it.

We would have known 6 weeks ago he wouldn't be 100% fit for the finals and yet were pesissted.

Apparantly the shoulder is looser now. This comes after weeks of saying it would make no difference.

Very perplexing in my view and mixed signals from the Club.

Porplyzia replaced by Moran
4:36 PM Thu 04 September, 2008

Jason Porplyzia will not play in Saturday’s elimination final against Collingwood at AAMI Stadium.

The Crows forward returned to the side last weekend against the Western Bulldogs after missing three matches to recover from brain bruising. But it is Porplyzia’s suspect shoulder which will force him to miss the final and he will now have a shoulder reconstruction as soon as possible to prepare for the 2009 season.

Ruckman/forward Brad Moran has been recalled after one week back in the SANFL while Brent Reilly, Ken McGregor and Bryce Campbell are listed as the emergencies.

Coach Neil Craig said the final decision was made after a discussion with Porplyzia on Wednesday afternoon.

“The bottom line is that the state of the shoulder is a bit different to how it was for most of the season, it’s looser and more likely to come out,” Craig said. “He can play but there are now more situations where he is limited in what he can do. It came back to his ability to perform and the risk of going into an elimination final and possibly being a player down.

“Jason did a great job for us last week – he’s been great for us all season and helped us into the finals. He set a great example for the playing group with his desire to play and perform.”

Moran, Kurt Tippett, David Mackay, Ivan Maric and Bernie Vince will play in their first AFL final.

Adelaide’s squad trains from 10am on Friday at AAMI Stadium.

The team is:

B: Johncock, Rutten, Bassett
HB: McLeod, Bock, Doughty
C: Symes, Goodwin, Mackay
HF: van Berlo, Stevens, Douglas
F: Tippett, Gill, Vince
R: Maric, Thompson, Edwards
Inter: Moran, Massie, Shirley, Knights
Emerg: McGregor, Campbell, Reilly

In: Moran
Out: Porplyzia (shoulder)

Plenty of tickets are still available for Saturday’s game and the team needs your support.

Interesting statement that his shoulder is now worse than it was previously. Considering that we've continually been told that it would not get any worse with repeated dislocations.

The right decision has now been made. The only question is whether this call should have been made a month ago, when he suffered the concussion.

I wish people would get off this anti-Gill fetish. He's playing the most difficult position on the ground and has the ability to be a game breaker. Not many others in the side have that factor.
IMO he'll play many more games for the AFC unless his body gives way big time. That could happen, because Gill is a courageous player who throws himself into contests with such vigour that it borders on the reckless at times. Sure keeps the opposition backmen on their toes at all times and runs opponents ragged because of his huge engine.
Go Gilly. Have a big one son and shut some of these whingers up.

Mrs Gill?;)

A calculated risk - particularly once Burton went down - that hasn't paid off. Or that's probably unfair... he was valuable in getting us to the finals, but it is too big a risk to keep playing him now, knowing he is more limited than previously.

Fair call. Don't play unfit players in finals.

Bring on the game!!

Porps almost carried us into the Finals by himself, regardless of how stuffed his shoulder is.

Common sense and logic has prevailed, but I almost would've played him anyway; purely because he's battled through it thus far, and deserves to keep playing.

beartoo - I like Gill a lot, but I think he struggles when he's our number one forward. Hopefully he'll dominate though.

Is that you, Grant Thomas ? :p

i agree; and he has been a matchwinner on occasions and helped the crows get this far, so it is unlucky of him to miss this finals series. the surgery probably should've happened when he got the concussion, but i think after the bulldogs game, despite helping the crows with 2 much needed goals, it showed that his performance was much more limited than previously. i believe it is the right call, despite believing Porpz deserves to play finals with the crows.

good to see Moran recalled.:thumbsu: even if it rains; didn't he make his debut in a wet game? i remember him saying he was surprised with the call up when it was expected to be wet, though, i wasn't as surprised, because he's always been known for his athletic abilities anyway.

Reilly unlucky to miss; hopefully, he shows some good form in the SANFL and gets a recall if the crows progress in the finals.

Gotta say i agree with you, especially given statements defending the decision earlier in the week (though i can't blame for keeping selection close to their chest).

Having said, it did appear he was more limited last week than previously. I guess they decided the worsening of performance was due to the shoulder and not simply a few weeks off/slippery conditions.

Despite saying he was wanting to play at the press conference, you could see how forlorn he was...in hindsight he probably knew the decision from the chat he had with Craig on the field, and that he was finished.

Porps, you are the spirit of the Crows in 08...let's hope the 22 that take the field can show the guts and determination you have.

Congratulations and THANK YOU to Jason Porplyzia for bravely playing on this year. I firmly believe we wouldn't be in the finals right now without him.

Well done also to Jason for using his common sense and knowing that enough is enough.

Here's to a successful surgery and a speedy recovery!

I don't think it's fair to blame the club in all of this. They seeked medical advice and were told that Jason's shoulder would not be made any worse by playing. I don't think we can take the comment that the shoulder is "more prone to dislocating now" as an indication that the shoulder itself has been damaged any more. However, if the shoulder is more damaged, I hope that the doctors who advised otherwise are taken to task over the matter.

Good to see Moran get his shot again - good for him to get a Finals game to his name. I really hope we don't see McGregor play though. I'd much rather have seen a name like Walker on the emergency list but I guess the Crows are declaring their desire to go tall for this game.

I will agree that Porps looked terrible on the weekend; it was amazing that he contributed what he did, but everytime he went near the ball or a contest, you could hear a collective sigh of relief from the entire stadium when he actually got back up.

He's been limited before, but on the weekend, he looked very sore and extremely restricted.

I'm disappointed that he doesn't get to play after everything he's done to date - but I'm sure it's the right call.

Walker possibly would have been the emergency but he is injured at the moment, he carried an injury for the last three weeks and isnt playing this week so he can have an assualt on the SANFL finals

Bummer for Porps. But I believe his best footy is ahead of him.

I like our team for Saturday. Of course Burton and Porps would be nice.

Bring it on:)
