The other thing that is also a possibility, and probably imo a smarter option, play Mal and Fletcher down back, play lucas and lloyd up foward, then play Ryder and 1 of Laycock/Hille, so Ryder can switch between backline and ruck.

Some of which could be managed by othe players, he's another dangerous forward option who I'd like to see play there from time to time, not saying every week

True does look very dangerous up forward as seen in Saints game but I still think he matches up best on alot of forwards that fletcher seems to play on e.g. Ryder best match on Franklin but doesn't get him cause he could be too damaging

There's plenty of time for Ryder-Franklin match-ups in the future

Ryder ain't the best match-up for Franklin, Buddy is to strong and Ryder to inexperienced to deal with that. 9 goals were spread evenly over Ryder,McPhee and Fletcher IIRC.

I think he should be used everywhere this year, Back/Forward/Ruck and even on a wing. Ryder has the ability to be better than goodes if used properly, wasted at CHB IMO especially since we drafted another 2 this year in Pears and Daniher.

Ryder has played on Franklin for short periods and is the best match up for him imo as he has the speed to go with him and the spring to get in the last second spoils.

Strength isn't a big part of Franklins game and he takes very few contested marks and drops marks when a defender is applying pressure.

His real danger is when the ball hits the ground and thats where Ryder would be ok, in comparison to McPhee and Fletcher, who Franklin has beaten easily in the past.

Most of those goals were on McPhee. Ryder played a whole game on him the second time and did pretty well. I like the idea of giving him a few different roles, it will be good for his development, but i think his main gig will be down back until he starts really demanding the ball when he goes forward.

Ryder did not play on Franklin in the first time that Essendon played the hawks. McPhee had him for most of the day with Fletcher playing on him after the damage had already been done. Ryder played on Franklin the second time they meet and held buddy to have a fairly minor impact on the game seeing Essendon was smashed in the midfield. He also held O'Loughlan in one off Essendon best wins against the swans

Hey Dons supporters.

Interested who you think will match up on the North forwards. As the practice match against Melbourne pretty much showed Laidley's hand for round 1.

A.Edwards - N.Thompson - M.Campbell
S.Grant - C.Jones - L.Thomas

We havn't really been playing with a traditional CHF, more a floating forward line, with a triangle focus, with the targets being Edwards, Thompson and Jones. With the ruckman pushing forward, particularly Hale, whom kicked 2.2 on the weekend, although McIntosh chimed in for 2 on the weekend as well.

From our perspective, the guy you have to watch out for is Edwards, he really is on fire, Melbourne didnt have an answer for him and he really murdered them with the ball in the air, kicked around 4.3 and took 12+ marks.

Any feedback would be good :thumbsu:

My guess would be something along these lines

Michael vs Thompson
Fletcher vs Edwards
Peverill vs Campbell
Nash vs Grant
Ryder vs Jones
Dempsey vs Thomas

Of course this will depend on whether we are more interested in the match ups or if we would prefer to maintain our structure

I'm not too sure about the pace of Campbell but Pev has played a lot of his time in defense this pre season, so as i said earlier if we are setting up to maintain our structure, it would be something like that.

Are you sure Jones would play chf?

What about Petrie or Hale?

Thompson - Mal
Edwards - Fletch
Jones - Paddy
Campbell - DC
Grant - Rama
Thomas - Nash

Myers will not be playing in round 1

A.Edwards - N.Thompson - M.Campbell
P.Ryder - M.Michael - A.Ramanauskas
S.Grant - C.Jones - L.Thomas
J.Nash - D.Fletcher - C.Dempsey

I dont think I could trust Nash on Grant, we are going to need a ton of drive out of him off the half back line and we cant afford to play loose on someone that dangerous.

In terms of getting the job done on a small forward Slattery is out best option for Grant to honest.

Why are people ignoring Slattery?

He's certainly not the classiest or quickest player on our list but he's one of our best shut down players.

Yeah, you got a good point there

I think he will be used as an on ball tagger, assuming he gets picked, hence why i left him out of the backline.

Didn't Buddy boot 6 against us second time round? (I have a Hawthorn dominated family they keep reminding me). I'd say if a blokes kicked 6 he's had a good day so while it wasn't as bad as first time round it still wasn't good. Ryder definitely did match up on buddy during the 1st encounter Sheeds threw everything but the kitchen sink at him.

As for O'loughlin he's hardly a superstar.

IMO the Hawthorn clash is one we shouldn't even play buddy down back for. Hawthorn have a standout forward line, very solid midfield, under-rated ruck duo yet one of the worst backlines in the comp. Ryder should be thrown forward to exploit this IMO.

He kicked 4 against us in the 2nd encounter. Ryder played most of the game on him and did very well considering we got killed out of the middle.

Ryder is realistically the only player that can keep up with Franklin - it will be a great test.
