if they go with an all-rounder, maxwell makes a lot more sense, based on selectors liking maxwell and that if he succeeds, you can easily drop lyon and field 4 seamers if so desired)

My line up

Cowan
Warner
Watson
Khawaja
Clarke
Hussey
Wade
Siddle
Starc
Hilf
Lyon

If three quicks plus Watson can't get it done against Sri Lanka we don't deserve to win. Really hoping for Khawaja to get picked but i tend to think Hughes will get the nod.

This is the line-up for me. I dont think our batting is in as much strife as many others do. They failed in the first dig this test, but aside from that they've all shown positive signs this series and Hughes must be given time, he is so talented and still only 23. Wouldnt be against seeing Khawaja or Doolan given a run either, be great to see Doolan come in for Punter in Tassie. I'm torn on that one so I'll be happy with whoever the selectors fgo with.

However, whoever they go with must be kept for all 3 tests.

I'd prefer to keep Clarke at 5 though, he is in career form right now and I wouldnt want to mess with that. But I wouldnt be livid to see him at 4, see how he goes.

Im keen to persist with Starc with an eye to England. He has much more upside than MJ and has youth on his side. If he can get some more consistency he'll be a weapon over there.

Is big Harris still broken? What I'd give to have Pattinson, Cummins or Harris available for selection. Patto in particular. :(
Yeh the Clarke thing must be a dilemma at the moment. He's our best batsman at 5, but our order needs a massive reshuffle. The overriding problem is that Watson isn't a number 3, pure and simple. I see the best compromise as a shift up to 4 for Clarke, with Watson back down to 5/6. On top of that, Warner's position as an opener isn't necessarily tenable. He definitely has a place in the team, but might be more suited down the order as well or potentially as a first drop with Hughes/Khawaja opening.

I'd rather see Bird on debut at Bellerive than Doolan, purely for the fact that he's had a more prolonged period of form. Nothing against Doolan though, I hope he keeps churning runs out and putting some desperately needed pressure on the incumbents.

And yeh, Harris is just about done. Would have done us wonders at the WACA.

12th: Starc

I think people are a bit harsh on Hilfy, his figures weren't great on good batting wickets but neither were Steyns. He'll get a bit of swing in Hobart and Melbourne and should be one of the first picked in England. We need some stability up the top of the order, how often have we been 3 for stuff all?

Watson only seems to make runs when he opens. Warner i'd like at 5 or 6 but prefer Clarke and Hussey there as that be the one staple, successful part of the line up. So maybe Warner at 4 when the shine off the ball. Not sure with that though, basically just thinking out loud.

Must admit, not fully sure about the bowling. Injuries to 3 of our very best bowlers, Cummins, Pattinson and Harris haven't helped us at all. Certainly hurt us against SA.

Johnson was better than (or should that be not quite a bad as??) Starc in this match, but there is more upside going with Starc. Hilfenhaus needs to refind his action and his form, but on what could be green top at his homeground he probably has a good chance of finding some there.

The biggest dilemma is, and has been for two years, is #3. A year ago Hughes looked shot, but if you back weight of runs at Shield level, he gets in...but is he or #3???. I hope he has worked on his technique in the past 12 months if he wants that spot. Really Clarke should be at 3 but that's not going to happen. Watson simply isn't a Test #3 and should bat down the order, but I don't know if anyone is bashing the door down at Shield level to take that spot. Whatever the case Hussey and Clarke have to move up one. They are the best batsmen in the team and we can't afford to be 3 down or worse by the time we've got 100 on the board.

They won't break the Cowan / Warner partnership without another series to evaluate and hope it clicks.

Cowan
Warner
Hughes
Clarke
Hussey
Watson
Wade
Johnson / Starc
Siddle
Lyon
Hilfenhaus

Jackson Bird and James Faulkner are frenetic at Bellerive - I'd consider both over Starc / Johnson if the pitch is green.

I thought Harris and Coulter-Nile have been picked in the Chairmans 11 this week indicating they are in the selectors thoughts . I know its a long shot but ....
I loved the parochial nature of your post mate, but Harris is years off yet. I agree that he will be a Test player one day, though. :thumbsu:

True, but seriously, Hastings was never going to be a test cricketer. He's a great mold for the shorter formats.
Who is to say he was/is never going to be a Test cricketer? I bet that has been said about heaps of FC and one Test players who go on to prove lots of people wrong.

People bitched when Andrew McDonald was selected, citing the fact he just wasn't a Test cricketer. I think if he was fit he wouldn't look out of place now at all.

surprised to see Watson get picked in every lineup. That's the impression I get from the selectors too, that his fitness is absolutely crucial for the wellbeing of the team.

His position really needs to be under the microscope at the moment. I think for 2012 he is averaging in the 20's with the bat and 40's or 50's with the ball (might have come down a fraction this test). But just not good enough to warrant his automatic selection status. For starters they should piss off his top order aspirations at least

Hmm. I'm going to suggest something different to see if it can generate discussion.

Ed Cowan
David Warner
Mike Hussey
Michael Clarke (c)
Shane Watson
Usman Khawaja/Phil Hughes
Matthew Wade (+)
Peter Siddle
Mitchell Starc
Ben Hilfenhaus
Nathan Lyon

Why don't we use Hussey's current position of 6 to bring in players and get them some easier runs to build up their confidence? Then, once Hussey retires, they can move up to 3 knowing they are worthy of being in the Test side and can use this confidence instead of being thrown in there straight off?

Would Hussey make runs at 3? He's pretty bloody good at 6.

Hussey has been a top order bat for most of his career. Having him up there would probably lead to less top order collapses too, I'd wager.

I just think Khawaja, say, might become a better player if we ease him into the team at 6 rather than thrust him in at 3 again.
