Hi all

Not exactly new here but only posted for the SFA league but Ive come with a question for a non(but hopefully soon to be) AFL fan. I put on my profile the swans as my team but that was just a random selection and I'm not exactly close in proximity to any team so ill ask here who i should adopt as my team.

I support the Broncos in the NRL so the Lions seem like an obvious choice but that seems like jumping on the bandwagon currently, Id also sway more towards a Melbourne team being that it is the home of AFL. But I'm open to all suggestions, id also love a team that's got some exciting young players coming through and plenty of history behind them.

For a few years I've told myself I'm going to start following AFL and I'm determined this will be the season.

Just support the Lions. They will go bad again one day.

Depends on what you're looking for. I think I'd suggest Fremantle if it weren't for your criterion of history. Vocal fanbase without being a league behemoth; constantly regarded as West Coast's little brother.

Indeed, "history" leaves you with only Victorian teams to choose from if you want a direct link to a team's continuous existence.

Might be a good time to jump on St Kilda? Tragic history, really, but they're sick of being (or being portrayed as) the whinging bridesmaids of the AFL and have gone berserk over the pre-season in terms of recruiting. Real "all or nothing" approach. Wonderfully loyal, rabid and completely traumatised supporters.

Essendon are one of the big 4 clubs, they have some good young playrrs and could bounce up the ladder if they can stay healthy.

Richmond are going through a rebuild and will have some hard years ahead.

Carlton, just stay away.

Collingwood have a good shot at playing finals and going deep into september but in a couple of years might have some lean years.

But if you looking for just success, go the Hawks. Really impresssive outfit that spend very little time at the bottom of the ladder.

Given your criteria, I'd recommend the Hawks or the Dogs.

Both are Victorian, both have 100 years of history (with some very famous names), both have exciting teams to watch at the moment with some good young players. One has more a history of modern success (Hawthorn; 13 flags) whilst the other has not been so fortunate (Western Bulldogs; 2 flags).

Neither should feel 'bandwagony' as both last won a flag about a decade ago and they finished the home and away in 8th and 9th last season, with both unpredictable but a good chance to improve this year.
