O.K here is my go at it, from 2000 to 2018
B: Grimes, Gaspar, J.Bowden
HB: Newman, Rance, Cameron
C: Knights, Cotchin, Campbell
HF: Rogers, Richardson, Deledio
FF: Martin, Riewoldt, Brown
R: Simmonds, Tuck, Foley
IC: Johnson, Houli, Edwards, I.Maric
Backline very solid, with rebound from Newman and Cameron
Centreline is awesome, very strong ball getters
Forwardline has elite written all over it, great marking and crumbing power
Rucks I went for Simmonds with I.Maric backup, with Simmonds drifting into forwardline
Interchange again very solid and flexible
Overall plenty of B&F's, 2 Brownlows and plenty goals kicked
Richardson, Martin, Rance, Riewoldt, Deledio and Cotchin future Hall of Famers
GO TIGERS

I have no idea how to rate the old campaigners that played in the early 00's other than Richo. Were blokes like Knights/Campbell actually any good relative to how good the players are now?

This is tricky. I'm much more familiar with our current line-up than the early 2000 line-up, so start with that by default, but hard to include players who so far have only a couple of seasons under their belt..

Backline - Rance & Grimes are locks. I think Bowden takes Broad's spot. I don't remember Gaspar or Andrew Kellaway being as consistent and reliable as Astbury has become so I'll stick with Astbury.
That leaves 2 more positions between Houli, Vlastuin, Cameron, Chaffey, Torney, Newman, Raines, Duncan Kellaway.
I think I'm leaning towards Cameron & Delidio with Newman/Vlastuin on the bench.

Ruck - Ottens, Stafford, Simmonds, Maric, Nankervis all come to mind- probably in that order.

Forwards - Got to be Richo & Riewoldt. Possibly Ottens as a 3rd tall/ 2nd ruck.
Nathan Brown a lock. Probably a resting midfielder. Leaves a couple of spots between Daffy ( had poor form after the 1900s from memory), Petiffer, Krakouer, Nahas, Jake King, Shedwards, Rioli.

Midfield - Dusty, Cotch, Knights(even in the last couple of years of his career I think his form would be good enough). Then ??? Broderick, Campbell, Tivendale, Hilton, Coughlan, Matt Rogers, Rory Hilton, Kane Johnson, Tuck, Jackson, Foley, Matt White, Grigg, Lambert.

B: Grimes Astbury Bowden
HB: Newman Rance Deledio
C: Campbell Knights Cameron
HF: N Brown Riewoldt S Edwards
FF: Ottens Richo Dusty
R: Stafford Cotchin Coughlan

Int: Vlastuin Broderick Krakouer Foley

Emergency (from): Gaspar Houli Simmonds Rogers

Knights was a champion and Campbell was a very good, very smart, and very durable player.

whoever is putting Newman in the team surely has no idea.

Don't get me wrong, he was a fantastic servant, very consistent and as a Capt has an emotional connection to the club and supporter base, but he was no star and certainly not part of a team of the century.
