What is the best team of the past 15 years?
The team that stands out the most from others.

Is it the Bombers in 2000?
The Hawks of 88'? Eagles of 91'?

This might upset a few Bombers fans but I reckon the Hawthorn team of 88' is by far the best. Some of the names from that Hawthorn team will be rembered as legends forever. There was Dunstall, Brereton, Platten, Dipper, Ayres, Buckenara...the list goes on and on.

In my opinion the runners up to the Hawks team of 88' would be the Eagles team of 91'. Even though they didnt win the flag, theyre team was packed with young stars that went on to be premiership players.

After the Eagles team of 91' would be North's team of 96'. A lot of people would say Essendon's 2000 side was better but I disagree. Essendon's 2000 side would be next.

What's your opinion?

HILLY well said, with grand finals and premierships it usually depends on what happens on the day,it is grossly unfair to compare premiers with premiers. Its a bit like asking 'how long is a piece of string'

There was a similar topic on Sly's board http://www.elevenoclock.com/forums/aflranting/
several months ago, with the Hawks and Bombers voting for their respective teams, and the rest of us divided but slightly favouring the Hawthorn 1988-89 teams from memory. I find it hard to argue with that.

The logic behind several people's opinions including my own, was that the competition at the moment is so lopsided because there are so many teams who just aren't up to it, rather than the top 3 or 4 being stand out teams.

This isn't meant to detract from Essendon's feat in 2000 at all, but the fact that an injury-ravaged and down-in-form Kangaroos were still better than TWELVE of the other teams, says something about the standard at the moment. Also Geelong finishing 5th after the H&A games is an indictment on the standard, as well as showing that there is no way there should be 8 teams in the finals.

Hilly,
I agree on almost all of these except for Adelaide 97 and 98. You have to realise that StKilda were easily the best team in 97 but were unlucky, the same can be said about the roos and doggies in 98. In both years the other grand finalists relaxed at half time with seemingly comfortable leads.
In 98 Adelaide were beaten by Melbourne by 57 points 2 weeks before the finals.

The Essendon of 2000 just ahead of the Hawks of 88. Guess who they played in the Grand Final,in those years. Melbourne! Gee, we pick the right years to make the Grand Final!

Essendon 2000 is the greatest team ever, no one in the league last year was anywhere near their class, but Carlton of 95 has to be rated 2nd they beat all the top teams that year and their only two losses where against lowly ranked teams and on paper their team looked stronger than the Essendon team this year. It would have been great to have seen these 2 teams play each other. I rank Hawthorn 88 as the 3rd best and Essendon 85 as the 4th.

Over the past 15 years, the best sides don't "necessarily" have to win the premiership.

For example, ever since I have followed football, I have never felt a side was unbeatable until 1991. At the start of 1991, the West Coast Eagles sat on top of the ladder 12-0, with a percentage of 200.

Make no mistake, the were better than the Hawks of 1991. West Coast just played poorly at the wrong end of the season.

And don't ANYONE talk crap about how the Eagles were "learning". They played 4 finals the previous season (all in Melbourne in 1990), and by the time the 1991 GF came around, most had played in 7 or 8 finals.

Adelaide proved in 1997-98, that you don't need finals experience to win the flag.

Over the last 15 years (1986-2000 inclusive), the 15 best team are:

1.) Essendon 2000

2.) West Coast 1991 (EASILY the best team of 1991)

3.) Hawthorn 1989

4.) Carlton 1995

5.) Hawthorn 1988

6.) West Coast 1994

7.) Geelong 1992 (highest scoring team in history - top of the ladder)

8.) Hawthorn 1986

9.) Geelong 1989 (when they were on-song, they were close to unbeatable. Pushed the mighty Hawthorn all the way in TWO matches)

10.) Essendon 1999 (18-4, top of the ladder. Only bad luck cost them a flag)

11.) Essendon 1990 (Top of the ladder, best percentage. They were better than the Pies, but the Pies played far better at the right time. Credit to the pies but Essendon were a more acomplished team. That's life.)

12.) West Coast 1992

13.) Carlton 1987

14.) Hawthorn 1987 (just as good as Carlton in 1987, and could have easily been premiers)

15.)North Melbourne 1996 (when they put their foot on the gas, no team could stop them that year)

Many premiership teams like Essendon in 1993, Collingwood in 1990, Adelaide in 97,98 and Kangaroos in 1999 were clearly not as good as the 15 teams mentioned above.

In some years, there are two outstanding teams. Only one of them could win the flag, so just because a team "failed" to win the flag, doesn't mran they weren't one of the best teams. West Coast in 1991 is CLEARLY one of the better teams of the last 15 years. In my opinion, they were better over the course of 6 months of football than their 1992-94 teams. West Coast consistently won matches easly in 1991. Their defence was incredible. In 1992-94 they were a bit inconsistent at times.

In 1991, the Eagles were ready. Like I said, they had played 4 finals mathces the previous season. They had experience. Hawthorn was just playing better at finals time. But this doesn't mean that the Hawks were a better team than the Eagles. The best team doesn't always win.

Without doubt Essendon were the best side last season but IMO the quality of the opposition was the worst in years. For example there were no top full forwards around such as Dunstall, Plugger, Ablett and Co. Arguablty there was Cummings who was injured and the ageing Modra but that was about it. It seems to me that apart from Essendon everyone else is rebuilding.

I believe the Essendon 2000 team is the best over the past 15 years.

Closest to them is the Carlton 1995 team.

I have to agree with Dan24( this is a first for me) in saying that Essendon 2000 was probably the best but then I can't distinguish between the Eagles 91, 92, 94 teams and the Hawks 80's team. They, to me, are equal second best. Sure the competition this year wasn't very good but Essendon was absolutely astounding. I couldn't believe it. Watching them play was just awesome. Of course I enjoyed watching the Eagles play better, since I was supporting them, but Essendon had and still has a awesome team.
They may be cocky but they really have the best team in the last 15 years.

Dan 24,

Good post, as I am only 18 I could only rely on premiers in most situations. The topic should not exclude great teams who did not take the premiership (essendon 99, north 98, geelong 92, west coast 91 etc

My only argument with you would be that the North Melbourne team of 1996 was better than the Essendon team of 1990.
