I find it hard to understand the resistance to giving Douglas credit for 2010. Sure he needs to really back it up and has played some really bad games in the past. And there's little doubt his B&F season wasn't quite as impressive as Vince's or Bock's for example.

But geez, we need some game-winners in the midfield and Dougie has hat quality in spades. And what's more, he won those games in a season when no one else was standing up.

As a player he annoys me immensely, but maybe it's just a personal thing. The refusal to develop a left foot, the constant running around of said left foot and getting into trouble, the missing bread and butter snap shots in front of goal, the lack of a genuine weapon (ie pace) for a player of his size....(that last bit isn't his fault obviously, but still annoying nonetheless)

He is not my favourite player, and in a premiership team, he'd been in the bottom half dozen in your team at best.

Fair call, but he has more flaws in his game than you can poke a stick at. Again, it's the concern about rewarding effort and diligence over actual brilliance.

If Brent Reilly wins it next year, we'll have to have a really serious chat.

Gee boy, you try hard, here you go dougie, have a gold jacket for effort.

ffs, is everything a conspiracy theory? Here we see a positive, a young player stepping up having a break out year, exactly the kind of thing we need, and still it gets twisted into yet another thing we are doing wrong.

The "actual brilliance" is the part of that quote I don't get. Dougie's flaw is consistency on a game by game basis, not brilliance. His strengths are game-breaking pace, agility & flair.

He does not have genuine pace, by AFL standards. I'm afraid you are delusional, and not for the first time today.

Geez, you're reaching. Not exactly the best barometer, but he was our GF sprinter for a reason.

He also had a top 10 agility result at Draft Camp in his year.

Nothing. It's what do WE have to do to ensure Richard Douglas isn't our best player again this year. Because if Richard Douglas is our best player, we are well and truly *****d.

I disagree. I think he's got plenty of improvement left in him. It surprises me that people are just as reluctant to accept this now, as they were 9 months ago. Yes we need the rest of the team to improve if we're going to achieve anything next year, but Douglas doesn't need to remain static for that to happen.
And he definitely has pace - it's his judgement of when/how to use it that needs work, although that improved a heck of a lot last season.

Geez, you're reaching. .

I'm reaching. Humourous. Let me reel off some names for you - Judd, Davey, Deledio, McLeod..... Or if you want to talk about our current list... Dangerfield. You clearly have no idea what the term "genuine pace" means in relation to the AFL.

Wow, I didn't realise speed and agility were the same thing. Back to the physics drawing board for me.

Dougy will always be someone's whipping boy.
He did everything asked of him in 2010.
In the past he looked to have the goods but always found a way to FKUP
He turned his career around and deserves praise for doing so.
I'm looking forward to seeing the next step in his career.

Douglas has always had good pace and agility.... his problem has always been before this year that he would run around like a chook with his head cut off and get himself into trouble. Let's hope he backs up a very good 2010 season in 2011:thumbsu:.

By the sounds of the dribs and drabs I've heard about our preseason training sessions it appears he's right up at the top in terms of the hard workers on the track so hopefully that sets him up for another big season. This is just my own perception but I don't think he's a "Vince" type (as much as I love the bloke) to slacken off and not work hard.

There is a difference between genuine and elite.

And here they come. Personal insults. The last refuge.

No, but one can infer that a good agility time is correlative to pace in a game situation. This was not the cornerstone of my argument. I back my eyes, but seeing as yours had failed, I tried to illuminate the path a little.

Mattner syndrome.

Gee, wouldn't we look a lot better with him still in the side! Especially at the expense of Symes.

FB: Stevens, Rutten, Johncock
CHB: Tambling, Davis, Doughty

CHF: Porplyzia, Henderson, Knights

Too easy. :thumbsu:

Oh and Slippery Pete, love your work mate, agree with your posts in this thread.

There is a difference between genuine and elite..

Really? And Douglas possesses which of these? It wouldn't happen to be neither would it?

And here they come. Personal insults. The last refuge..
Wasn't intented to be personal, champ. There's nothing too official about who lines up in the GF sprint though. Didn't Fev rock up half-cut one year and take it out? :)

I'll let the rest of the board decide for themselves whether they think Richard Douglas has genuine AFL speed.

I never claimed he had elite pace. How can I lose an argument I wasn't making. You are losing your marbles because of your irrational vitriolic hate for a player.

His strengths are game-breaking pace, agility & flair

Richard Douglas breaks open games with those 3 qualities. You're the one who deciding to take one element out of that description and turn my statement into something it is not. On its own, his pace isn't elite, but with his other two main attributes, he is a game breaker.

Elite = absolute best.
Genuine = real.
