Team Selection Round 1 - 2010

I think Staker's in our best 22 if he's playing well across the half-forward line. We don't really have a lot of depth across there compared to down back, as shown by Austin retaining his spot for so long. Disclaimer: I liked bits of what I saw, but they were too infrequent for a team heading into finals at the time.

I think Raines has a lot of competition for his spot, but I can see him making the team easily if he plays to his full potential. However that could be a big if.

I really hope Bartlett doesn't play in his first year. He's just come off from a knee reconstruction and would be under huge pressure to perform (Since he's our first draft pick and Daniel Rich etc.) I would like for him to do one full season and pre season before getting a game.

Starting 22 for 2010

B: Adcock Merrett McGrath

Rich on the bench. That's brave.

Emer: Hawksley, Leunberger, Raines, Stiller, Proud, Rockcliff, Clarke, Colier, Cornelius, Hanley, Banfield, Bartlett etc.

Shelden will be given a chance to stay in the backline but now he has pressure from Raines, Adcock and Clarke.

Of our new players at the club, the only one that is guaranteed a walkup start if fit is Maguire. He will make CHB his own next year. Staker will play across half forward so he should make the team too. Buchanan is lineball.

It all depends on pre-season form and injuries and if all goes to plan, this is my round 1 team for next year.

Agree with you lion1024 about Bartlett but I just couldn't resist.
Staker will get 30 touchs and 4 goal's first game, then go on to do nothing for the rest of the year.

All things going to plan, this is my ideal backline. The big query obviously is whether Maguire can cut it as a best 18 player but we've got the advantage of knowing Patfull is a pretty decent CHB to fall back on. But I like him playing that loose man role. He's a great kick, a decent decision maker and, most of all, reads the play well enough so that he'll be able to help out the 2 big defenders - something that I think our side hasn't been able to do tell well since the premiership backline.

In the forward line, I've got a strong feeling that Albie will be in there somewhere, injuries permitting. We need pace and chase to compliment the big guys and I don't think we get enough of that with the likes of Buchanan, Power, Polks and Staker as the other forwards.

Another interesting factor is our lack of obvious tagger in the best 22. Raines might be one to have a crack at that role if he gets fit enough to play onball.

Didn't I read somewhere that X has said he was drafted to kick goals?
I hope not in 2006 he returned 3 goals 2 at 60% in 13 games
in 2007 10goals 16 at 38% in 18 games
2008 6goals 5 at 54% in 8 games
and 2009 DNP.

Because he played off a HBF. There seems to be some suggestion he might get a rebirth forward.

It's a bit hard getting goals when your playing as a half back flanker. I think what he was trying to say was that you might see X Clarke in the forwardline as a crumbing forward or as a HFF.

Much harder to fit everyone in than I thought.

There really are so many variables to this team as it will greatly depend on
a) how the new recruits fare (Staker,Clarke,Maguire)
b) but also how well the middle tier keeps developing (Riska,Adcock,Sherman)
c) and the recovery of players returning from injury (Leuy,Charman,)

Didn't I read somewhere that X has said he was drafted to kick goals?

First:
"I have played my best footy across halfback but the way the game has changed over the last few years I may be suited to being a small forward playing up in the midfield as well.

"I will have to sit down with Vossy and see where he would like me to play and what my role would be in the team."

Then:

"I spoke with Vossy for a couple of hours on a range of different things, but more importantly what my role in the side would be. He can see me playing across the wing and half-forward which suits my style of play."

and:

''[Assistant coach] Craig [Lambert] said how do you feel about kicking the ball into a forward line with Brendan Fevola, Daniel Bradshaw and Jonathan Brown? ''I said, 'it'll be easy. I'll just close my eyes, bomb it in and one of them will mark it'.'

Yeah, loads of other teams have had great success with recycled, ‘crossroads’ type players.

If just a few of our new guys work out competition for starting spots is going to be a hell of a lot harder.

bout spot on weevil, even if only 1 or 2 work out as starting 22 players out of the 4-5 we got, that 1 or 2 still really puts some pressure on for spots. With no injuries it was hard enough making a 22 from last years list. That should really help get that extra 5% out of some of our guys with maybe 6 or 7 players probably fighting for 2 spots.

From an outsiders perspective.

B - Maguire Merrett Adcock
HB - Drummond Patfull McGrath
C - X. Clarke Black Johnstone
HF - Sherman Brown Brennan
F - Staker Fevola Polkinghorne
R - Clark Power Rich
INT - Charman Selwood Buchanan Rischitelli

I have had so many goes at this since I started this thread that I've lost count and I am starting to get lazy.

I quite like iGNITER's team, but I would drop Johnstone, play Staker on the wing in a swingman role, put Buchanan in the forward pocket and Redden on the bench.

Maguire needs to be nursed back, I would have him return via the seconds so I would shift McGrath to a back pocket, Patfull to HBF, Clark to CHB, Charman in the Ruck, rotating with Luenberger, who is another inclusion. Easy!

That lineup should easily finish top 4 and would be a chance for the flag!

Go Lions ... but the guernseys are an embarrassment!

EDIT: Just talking to a St.Kilda supporter at work who tells me Maguire had a couple of B.O.G. performances for Sandringham in the VFL and he thought he should be cherry ripe for the start of 2010. Which means Selwood now named as an Emergency and Maguire on the Interchange in my team.

I suppose the thing that this process highlights is that we do have an excess of riches, provided everyone is up and running.
