Team v Kanga's

A good technique I use to stop from getting too angry is, every time Gardiner goes near the ball I imagine Benny Hill music playing. Makes it much more amusing. :D

Does that work for Shannon Byrnes too?

Re: Charlie on the Extended Bench Again...

Who knows.

There is no chance of him getting into this team
barring about forteen injuries.

He's a VFL boy.

I watched the VFL game last week and he seemed a cut above those ones. I wouldnt mind giving him a go for a week instead of Nathan, who isnt having any real impact at the moment anyway.

Exactly, there is always room for improvement. At the moment Nathan isnt really contributing as much as he could, so if we can bring someone else in that can give us a little bit more then i am all for it. WHether Charlie could or not who knows, but its worth a try when we are 4 games clear.

Re: Charlie on the Extended Bench Again...

I have no problem with them trying cheer-up, if anything if he plays allright it may give him some currency at trading time. We don't have much in the experienced forward stocks (talking about depth here) so to give game time to a replacement forward in the case of injuries is not a bad move.

Re: Charlie on the Extended Bench Again...

The "they are increasing his trade value" doesn't stand up, because if he doesn't play well, his trade vale won't increase and if he does play well, he will stay in the team.

Why does everyone want to play around with our structure? It's ridiculous. Are people that dumb that they think we can bugger around with Gardiner, King and Byrnes? We are taking risks that aren't needed and I'm very worried.

Re: Charlie on the Extended Bench Again...

Charlie has been named on the extended bench again.....Why would they do this....any thoughts?

Maybe it's simply a matter of policy:

"If you play well then you're a chance to play in the seniors - reward for effort and consistency".

I think it's fair enough, but I worry a bit about it like the rest of us.

The stupid three ruckmen thing aside, messing with our structure and 'experimenting' with blokes like Charlie is going to be nothing more than destabilising. Keep Nathan in the team and get him into some form - he'll almost always be better value than Charlie. You can't deny he tries his guts out, but he's a clanger king and he holds the play up far too much.

Keep him as a backup only.

But they are needed! What if Nablett gets injured? Hawkins does not perform well enough in a normal game, let alone the pressure of a Finals. There is no reason we cant give Gardiner a go.

As others have pointed out, he is 23. Maybe he has matured. How many players in the competition have matured at a late age?

its not a bloody circus

i hope Thompson doesnt thinks it circus time and starts stuffing around with the team, geez i mean the reason we have a chance this year as in previous finals we have had players like Playfair, Kingsley, Haynes and Gardiner playing and they r all not up to finals footy.

This talk about gardiner makes me sick in the stomach, the bloke is a dud who has nothing to offer at senior level make no mistake about it, we have a setteled lineup and once we get rid of Byrnes we have no weak players, thats the reason the last few yrs and in the 90's we lost grand finals, carrying dudus who couldnt play, Mensch, handley, miles, ,erriman etc r just a few, please Thompson stop all this 3 ruckman shi t, playing gardiner and Byrnes and put the best side out there and win this bloody thing, enough of the circus stuff, and for *** sake, if anyone can honestly think Gardiner deserves a game then geez i am lost for words.

Re: its not a bloody circus

I don't think you need to be too worried. He wont be named.

I think they will trial all three ruckman on Sunday meaning the other two bench players will probably be Varcoe or Hunt and Enright.

Final changes likely:

In: Chapman, Blake
Out: Byrnes, D. Johnson

So we just leave his spot vacant?

Give Chaunce a run, he's earnt it from his form in the 2's.

P.S. I would have made my quote smaller, but I couldn't find another full-stop. Sorry about that.

Just on the extended bench at the moment though, and the odds of him actually playing would be pretty astronomical one would think.

Agree with your sentiments though, think it's about time to start playing the side that we will take into the finals, and that means two ruckmen, Ottens and Blake.

Re: its not a bloody circus

I have my doubts about King but surely Bomber has earned some trust now. 14 straight wins, won the minor premership with several games to go. Didn't we have doubts about Harley and Ling early this season too? We have to believe that Mark Thompson knows what he is doing.

Its not "messing around" with a team if someone clearly isnt performing. Lets be honest, if Nath had a different surname there wouldnt be nearly as many people protesting about him being dropped...

We just never know. He might be a different player. He could kick 4 for all we know, and win us the game. We never know until we try him. If I recall many people were stating we should dump Ling, dump Enright, etc etc... that Thompson didn't know what he was doing. I think he has deomstrated that he is relativily decent at doing what he does :P

If Gardiner does have a bad game, he gets dropped. simple as that.

You're right, but the difference was Ling and Enright had at least performed well at the top level. When was the last time Gardiner did?

I saw him in a practise match earlier this year against Melbourne and he looked terrific - led well, took marks, kicked goals. And I thought he deserved his spot in round 1. But once the game arrived he failed again. It's nothing against him but I just don't think he can cut it at AFL standard. And although Nathan Ablett is still learning and has been quiet, he's still a better option. His disposal is way better, and his decision making is also superior. Doesn't fall over every 2 seconds either.

Gardiner might play, he might kick 3 or 4 and make me look stupid. If so, happy to admit I'm wrong. But there have been 51 mostly ordinary games so far, I'm not sure in his sixth season why number 52 will be any better.

Someone with a brain - refreshing ;)

Agree 100%

I don't care if Gardiner is 23 - fact is he is no good.

I'm amazed at the fuss being kicked up over Charlie's inclusion on a Thursday night extended bench.

I would have thought it to be clear, if not logical, that he won't play (barring an 11th hour injury to a key forward of ours, of course). Reward for some good VFL games is that he gets his name printed in the papers for a day.

anyone think we should have dropped shazza byrnes instead of d.j? i mean jeez, at least d.j can kick the ball, and handball it for that matter......no wait, he can do everything better than byrnes!!!!!!

Shannon's done better than some of you give him credit for.

byrnes......better than we give him credit for? no, surely not, this is shannon byrnes here not ronnie burns or james byrne!!!! face it, the guys a chop who cant kick

May help if you set aside your irrational hatred for Byrnes and actually watch him with an open mind, you may then see the good work he does instead of concentrating on the occasional clanger he makes, which leads to you making wild and inaccurate statements about his supposed inability to kick.
