Which team do you think has the best youngsters? Which club do you think needs to adopt a youth policy and cut down on their older players.

Essendon have probably the longest list of talented youngsters.

Adealide need to think about cleaning out a few veterans I think. Also we here at Swanland have a few ageing warhorses we need to 'manage' carefully over the next few seasons. Same goes for Brisbane too their very talented list is certaionly not getting any younger thats for sure.

Geelong drafted 7 young players last year and all but 2 have played senior football.

I don't know if that means that the rookie's are good or if the rest of the team is bad, probably a bit of both.

Spriggs, Ling, Chapman, Corey (first game last week) and Foster (only 2 games so far) have been the rookie's who have played. Apparently the two which haven't played yet, Corey Enright and Ezra Bray are potentially the best of the lot.

Last year we drafted Clarke, Harley, Wojcinski and O'Brien who have all played well at different stages this year.

Add to that, Steven King is only 21, Cameron Mooney is a premiership player at 21, Scarlet is 21, Houlihan is 22, Snell is 22 and Bizzell is only 23.

We have been forced to play far too many youngsters than necessary however they have stood up well and the experience will prove invaluable. Baker, Beetham, Begley, Blake, Campbell, Cranage, Davis, Hayes, Heazlewood, Moyle, Schwarze, Walton, Milne and Wittison are all 20 years or under and have shown potential

Two players on our rookie list would be worth promoting. Stephen Milne who we recruited from the Essendon supp list. He is a small forward pocket type player who has been playing very well on the ball recently. He killed St Kilda in the reserves GF last year. Love his aggression towards the opposition. Mark Wittison broke his collarbone 2 weeks ago but has kicked a few bags of goals and is a key position player.

i think fremantle does. all three top ten draft picks(hasleby, brown and pavlich) have been chosen for norwich rising star awards this year. they all have great potential, i am a 15yr old girl and if i have noticed this, so should eveyone else.

Saints certainly have the most young players,And carlton always seem to have a lot of aging players on their list, However Carlton are 2nd top and Saints bottom so maybe the blues have the right policy after all.
Sainter, saw milne play about 7 games last year and the saints have an awesome talent in him, I would have liked the bombers to put him on our rookie list but not enough spots left.

Collingwood has the best bunch of youngsters:

Fraser, Tarrant, Lockyer, Betheras, Shaw, Johnson, etc.

I definately think the Fremantle Dockers! Last year they cut 1/4 of their list and went for a youth policy, they didnt want to listen to any clubs who were interested in trading. And this year they will be doing the same with Wira, Callaghan, Prescott, Sinclair, Maher and a few others all leaving the dockers. With more youngsters coming in - and with time to develop I think Fremantle could be starting to build up on something big - they will be playing finals by 2003!

ytry4, forget Betheras and Lockyer. I don't think either of those two will be stand-out players. They'll be handy but I don't think either will determine whether we're good or bad.

My list would be Fraser, Tarrant, Adkins, O'Bree, Shaw, Nick and Leon Davis. They are all highly talented footballers.

Others who will hopefully come on are Johnson, Oborne, Scotland and Roach.

We need another 2 key postion players though and that's what they should be looking for at the draft.

Brisbane for sure.
We have a very young list - with alot of players under the age of 22.

Luke Power, Craig Bolton, Aaron Shattock,
Jonathon Brown, Des Headland, Damian Cupido,
Shannon Rusca, Shane Morrison, etc etc etc

Our team is defintely one for the future

Essendon have the most talented youngsters. They have the right mix of youth and experience. Carlton's youngest regulars, however, must be about 20, the age of Whitnall. Their older policy may be working now, but wait until Bradley and Silvagni retire.

They said the same about the Blues when Kernaghan and Williams retired. In fact they said the same thing about the Blues before that when Hanna and Alvin retired. And before that when Doull and Co retired.

Yes we all expect Carlton the geriatric team to fall over when one of their many elderly players retire but look what happens ?

Somehow, every year, Carlton seems to balance its horde of old players with the right input from youngsters to achieve a remarkably balance and competitive outfit.

I hate the Bluebaggers just like you Bomber32 but you have to give credit where it is due.

Like Pigs Arse Elliott once snorted - "Carlton don't rebuild"

melbourne has certainly proved that youth is the key to a good team foundation.

last years results were blamed on them being to complacent at what they achieved the year before, but have a look at them this year!!

they have a core of leaders at ages between 20-24 (Woewodin, Leoncelli, Yze) and first-timers, who literally have not had a big learning curve in the reserves who are proving their mark, and standing tall (Whelan, Green, Wheatly etc.)

once these guys have developed and have a bit of experience on their side, Melbourne would have developed a sound base for the next generation of the red and blue

but then at Melbourne, you can't forget the 'old' guys, but hey they are sitting up in the coaches box.

The reason for that Joel is because you only really look at the youngsters on your own list. You could probably name a couple from each club but that's about it.

With opposition clubs you generally tend to focus on their better players.

Two untrieds who can play are Corey Mcgrath from Essendon and Mark Passador from Carlton.
My team the Roos have nothing, just a gaping hole from recruiting Colbert,Burton and that other dud Calthorpe, maybe next year the club will go for some quicker, younger players.

Milne is an exciting talent. I remember him killing us in the reserves Grand Final last year and kicking a bag of goals in the exhibition match against Hawthorn in London.
He is a very good small player and it is possible that he will be promoted from the rookie list at the end of the season. I like to see a young player that is not only skillful but hard at the ball and not afraid to indulge in a bit of push and shove.

Joel

Is it really that much of a problem that people tend to write about their own teams? I write about St Kilda a lot because they are the team that I know most about it. However I also like reading about what other people have to say about their own teams. Besides, is there any reason in particular why almost all of your recent posts seem to be having a go at someone else or a group of people. Just relax a little bit!

Barney

Dead right (unfortunately) son.

Any bomber supporter with half a brain could have told you what poor value Calthorpe represents but I thought you picked him up for a packet of twisties and a diet coke..???? If not I will be amazed someone as astute as Pagen has been so fully sucked in.

The Geelong Judas was always a risk coming off a major knee reco but I reckon you might have been a bit unlucky with him.

As for Burton, has he been all bad? Hard to tell from over here but I thought he's won you a coupla games. Plus he's not your problem - its pace in the midfield in the absence of Stevens and its a backline under 65.

Reckon there are a few decent youngsters at your club though so don't get too upset - remember, rightly or wrongly you're still reigning premier until Sept 2nd...

Dutch

PS. Reckon Essendon, Freo, Collingwood, Melbourne, Geeling, Brisbane and to some extent WCE, Sainters, Hawthorn & to an even lesser extent Carlton all have great potential in the youth dept... but if you asked me to pick a preference I'd be happy to keep ours... (oooh ahhh Corey McGrath)

essendon has blooded alot of young talent in the last few years

as already said milne playing in the ressies last year along with green and wheatley from melb and spriggs from geel

henneman, ramanauskas, mcveigh, mcalister, are all pretty exciting and dont forget the johnsons, rioli, solomon are all pretty young and even lloyd is only 22

The Dockers have recruited the best youngsters this year by a mile and their recruiting would have to be the best in the league. Apart from 3 norwich rising stars, how about Cook and Longmuir. Freo will be in the finals next year.

I think you are right FreoFinals.

But you have to remember that it is a hell of a lot easy to recruit well when you have 3 picks in the first 5 in the national draft.

I am hoping we can do the same thing.

And while Leppitsch and even Gehrig would be great recruits, I think Nick Stevens is the pick of the players coming out of contract. I doubt we would get him but if would be great if we could.
