Teams which underachieved?

We wasted a few seasons under grant Thomas as well really should have won with a prime gtrain Harvey still playing well and plenty of young stars
Lol that pitch invasion cost St Kilda that 2004 premiership, they would have beat Brisbane in that grand final, they were cooked by the end of that finals series and St Kilda would have been at home.

I thought both Hawthorn and Port Adelaide would have thumped them that day, just so happened to be Hawthorn. 2016 is more so the one that they really should have won.

Buddy getting injured in the first few minutes of the game and the umpires certainly stopped us winning in 2016.

One of the swans mids got a broken leg or ankle from a bad Bulldogs tackle, and that tackle should of been a free kick to he swans

Heeney it Luke Parker I think? It was definately a swans mid.

I think it was Hannebery from memory though I could be wrong. In truth he was never the same after that tackle, not sure if it was related but he suffered a lot of injuries after that and never reached what he could do again.

Geelong is a weird one. Yeah 4 grand final losses in 1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995. Of the 4, 1992 was the golden chance to win a flag.

Then there was the 2007-11 run. Flag in 2007. Made the grand final in ,2008 but choked after half time.

2009 won a flag narrowly vs the saints. 2010, got smashed into a preliminary final. Then in 2011 beat the magpies in the grand final where it was close for 3 and a half quarters.

I know he cats won another flag in 2022.

But that period from 2012 to 2021 was Interesting. If cats had some luck in finals, Geelong would of and should of won 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2020.

Despite losing to Freo in Geelong in the qualifying final, cats were likely to beat the dockers in the grand final had they beat the hawks in the preliminary final.

Had cats beaten up the swans in the 2016 preliminary final, cats would of been favorites vs the dogs.

2019 preliminary final, cats lost to Tigers. A fully fit cats squad would of beaten GWS who had literally nothing left in the tank in the preliminary final win vs the Magpies.

2020 Grand final vs tigers, well cats would want that final quarter back.
Add the 24 prelim to that list when we coughed up a 24 point lead in the 3rd quarter.
Also the 25 GF when we brought out worst game for the year on GF day.

2007 West Coast straight setted by the angry Footy Gods.

Power 2001 - 2004 the greatest underacheivers. Yes the Pies could match them 2001 -2003, their bogie side for sure. But a side spitting that much talent & rocking that well for 4 years straight had no excuses to lose at home to the Hawks, Pies & Swans in finals. If we had 3 years of Power v Lions GF's i'd say history would have been far more interesting. That loss to Sydney was both helarious for non Power supporters & incredibly sad for them at the same time.
I don't know how I left out eagles 07. How could I forget. Injuries cost you and cousins.

Not to mention coaching insanity led directly to us losing the Qualifying final before that.

2013 was almost as bad as 2008. They're the two clear standout seasons to me we should have won the flag and didn't. Way worse than the last two seasons.
Chappy as the sub in his 250th….

Eagles 2007 were denied because of Ben Cousins. Should have been 3 straight Finals.

Rubbish. Umpires had nothing to do with it. You just weren't good enough.

It's amazing how the umpires apparently decided that game, but can't identify any Bulldogs goals that came from dodgy frees or ones that Sydney didn't get.

I agree with Runvs. Umps were shocking.

The AFL review did not deem the overall umpiring performance to be poor, but the league’s view was that it was beneath the level expected, bearing in mind the highly-experienced and capable umpires who officiated — Matt Stevic, Simon Meredith and Scott Jeffery.

The league were embarrassed to the point that then-acting AFL general manager of football operations Mark Evans rang Sydney chief executive Andrew Ireland on the Tuesday after the match to apologise for the umpires costing the Swans four goals. The winning margin blew out late to 22 points after the Bulldogs kicked the final two goals in time on of the final quarter.

“I’ve actually watched that game twice, which is unbelievable for me,” Hannebery said.

“I don’t care which way you paint it, but some of the direct free kick goals were extraordinary.

“I’ve slowed it down, in this day and age, now the way the game is umpired ... I’m going to say we almost win the game.

“(Swans defender) Dane Rampe got tackled for one second (in the third term), got a handball away, but he got holding the ball and it ended in a free kick goal. It was unbelievable.

“It’s not that I want to blame the umpires because the Bulldogs, in every final they were unbelievable and, looking back, they probably were the best team that year given how well they played in the finals series ...

“So, take nothing away from them, but looking at the game in its entirety, some of those free kick goals, wow.”

West Coast in 2019 were poor. Blew a top 4 chance at home vs Hawks in the last game. Choked away a 22 point last qtr lead against The Pies at Optus also. The Richmond game at The G where they lost by a goal also cost them. I think a draw may have been enough for top 4. They had their chances for the double chance but weren't good enough.

Also unfortunate that they got the wobbles against Collingwood, Sydney etc in home finals after finishing 1st.
Not sure it was the wobbles. Port went 2-3 against us in that 2001-2003 window and one of their wins was by 5 points. Four of the five games were at AAMI Stadium. They never actually demonstrated that they were the better team.

They kept beating other teams more often, then choking in finals. 2004 they finally fixed that, although they tried their best to give St Kilda a shot instead.

Dockers 2012-15

Should have made a prelim in 2014 but wouldn't have got past the Hawks. Should have been out of sight against Port Adelaide in the semi and it cost them. That Hawks Port prelim was a beauty though.

In 2015 Sheridan killed the game for Freo. I still don't think they win it without that costly turnover but they were well in the game.

Not good enough. But they had some chances.

Doubt the Eagles were ever going to beat Geelong that year, Cousins or no Cousins.
If Judd doesn't get that groin injury, Cousins doesn't do what he did, and the team stopped their party culture, they could have definitely pushed Geelong. Even 2005, they messed up I think due to their party culture, imagine had they been more serious it could have been a dynasty.

I agree. Cousins plays a full season there's 3 games that you don't lose. Bombers, Lions and saints. That gives you top 2 and two home finals. Make the granny for sure and its game on vs the Catters. 3 straight Grand Finals and the talk about the 90's gets put into the Cats heads.

Very good chance. If we got within 5 of them in the Prelim there's no reason why a fully healthy West Coast couldn't get the better of them.

Ok then, which goals to the Bulldogs came from shocking decisions. Were there any in the second half or particularly the last quarter? There must have been since Sydney led at half time.
I don't recall. But it doesn't have to come from goals directly. Wrong decisions can change momentum and lead to goals, not necessarily directly. I was glad the dogs won. As mentioned I backed them to win and even had money on JJ for the Norm Smith. Won my 500, should have been 750 I thought I put more on him but didn't. Still a good day for me. Still glad they got the win even now. But it wasn't won fairly imo.
