Could name many. Depends on how critical you judge a side too. You could argue the Eagles in the 90's as well as The Roos perhaps underachieved for all their strong showings. Carlton also, 92, 93 and 94 they fizzled out in the end. They were a damn good side in 92 but lost their last two games to Collingwood and West Coast missing the 6 by a whisker. 94 as well they lost their last 3 including 2 finals against sides that finished 7th and 4th with the latter missing many stars. Bombers lost two finals by a point in 96 and went out by a point jn the prelim in 99 to 6th placed Carlton. Kind of lucky in 93 against the innacurate Crows who made amends for that in 1998. The Bulldogs made 3 prelims in the 90's as they did in 2008, 09, 10 losing them all. The Saints in those years played in 3 grand finals for 1 draw and 2 losses. Port in the early 2000's won 2 out of 7 finals twice topping the ladder. Geelong made 4 grand finals in 5 seasons and one prelim. Could Argue they blew 2008 but made amends in 2009 where the Saints botched their chances in front of goal.

Sydney well they speak for themselves. Which teams do you feel underachieved?

It's hard winning premierships, no doubt the Eagles should've won more than two in the 90s, the same could be said of the Roos. Essendon of 2000 are arguably the best team of the AFL era, but only won the single flag? Geelong stumbled in 2008 which was probably their best season. Should've won four of five in a row! They did win 3 out of 5 years, so i guess i'll let them off the hook!

I think the Saints arguably should have won 2009 so the Cats did a North in 99 Job of making amends.

Geelong is a weird one. Yeah 4 grand final losses in 1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995. Of the 4, 1992 was the golden chance to win a flag.

Then there was the 2007-11 run. Flag in 2007. Made the grand final in ,2008 but choked after half time.

2009 won a flag narrowly vs the saints. 2010, got smashed into a preliminary final. Then in 2011 beat the magpies in the grand final where it was close for 3 and a half quarters.

I know he cats won another flag in 2022.

But that period from 2012 to 2021 was Interesting. If cats had some luck in finals, Geelong would of and should of won 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2020.

Despite losing to Freo in Geelong in the qualifying final, cats were likely to beat the dockers in the grand final had they beat the hawks in the preliminary final.

Had cats beaten up the swans in the 2016 preliminary final, cats would of been favorites vs the dogs.

2019 preliminary final, cats lost to Tigers. A fully fit cats squad would of beaten GWS who had literally nothing left in the tank in the preliminary final win vs the Magpies.

2020 Grand final vs tigers, well cats would want that final quarter back.

The Dees are up there. Had the best midfield and defence in the league for a few years there. Should've won at least one more flag, yet failed to win even 1 final after 2021.
Beat me too it. Hard to criticise a premiership team though failing to even make a prelim after this given the talent on that list is a big disappointment.

Have Geelong under Chris Scott under achieved?

13 finals from 15 season, 2 flags under his tenure (one in his debut season with a team that had already won a flag under Bomber).

2024 was one that got away. They could and should have beaten the Lions in the prelim.

And 2013. Flip of the coin result. Travis Varcoe shanked a gimme in the last minute of the game. A goal would have led to extra time. Instead, Cats lost by 5 points.

I think Hawks were pretty inaccurate though. Then again so we're you guys against Freo.

No guarantees you would have beaten us the next week though. We'd beaten you in finals in Victoria twice in 12 months at that point.

Not to mention coaching insanity led directly to us losing the Qualifying final before that.

2013 was almost as bad as 2008. They're the two clear standout seasons to me we should have won the flag and didn't. Way worse than the last two seasons.

I reckon they beat you if they make it. Grand finals are different. Hard to beat teams twice in finals. But yes you guys certainly would have believed in yourselves going in. Tbh I never have you guys a chance vs Hawks in 2013.

Freo had no GF experience. And Ross Lyon cannot coach a premiership

Bulldogs 2025.

On paper stacked with talent and looked like royalty but couldn't even make finals
Not sure if this is more a case of underachieved or overhyped.

The usual media pundits and Champion Data waffle on about attacking footy being the be all and end all, but Bulldogs in 2025 and Crows in 2024 show that you can't make up for poor defence with good offence.

I'd be keen to see the stats, but would imagine more teams qualify for finals with strong defence covering for offensive deficiencies rather than the other way around.

Look at Geelong in 2007. One of the greatest teams of the 21st century and their forward line was a bit meh. Their defence and midfield though more than made up for it.
