For me, I have to say I have a soft spot for a couple of teams from a few places, just based on sentimental stuff...

FC Basel - A mate of mine is from Basel, had a great night out on the town with him there, being an Aussie among football supporters was great, they all love Scot Chipperfield there. Even saw a Wollongong Wolves scarf in one pub! So I'm an FC Basel man when it comes to Switzerland.

Partizan Belgrade - visited family in Belgrade, found the place strangely alluring. Partizan were playing Newcastle that night, and the city was buzzing... always look out for their results.

Besiktas - on a bus trip in Turkey, was befreinded by a couple of Turks who wanted to know what football team I followed in Turkey. Wanting to avoid Galatasaray and Besiktas in Istanbul (where I was coming from), I plumped for Besiktas... which caused a great deal of disgust from my new Turkish friends. Good laugh though, trying to talk football in Turkish!

River Plate - Fell in love with Buenos Aries, and used to wear the white with red sash in our ill-fated indoor soccer team when I was younger.

Fluminense - Loved Rio too, went to a game at the Maracana to see Flamengo play. Flamengo played rubbish, and I can't stand any team in black and red, so I went for their hated rivals!

Crewe Alexandra - I have a mate who was born and raised in Cheshire before moving to Adelaide and he's a mad Crewe fan. I started following their results a lot, despite being an Arsenal supporter through and through. That, and Crewe is a nice place.

River Plate - Used to watch Apatura on TV when it was on, River Plate wear the colours of Arsenal, so I took an interest in them.

Milan, West Ham & Holland.......always Holland, has there ever been anything better than Total Football?& the Dutch so skillful, so arrogant so loving of fighting amongst themselves, the Brazil of Europe, what could they achieve if they all rowed the boat together.

And Jonny Rep, what a name, what a player.

St Pauli - weekends in Hambury (say no more). St Pauli are really bohemian compared to SV Hamburg and their crowds are fun ... walking distance to the Reperbahn as well.

Leyton Orient - lived near there and went to a dozen games. Was absolute torture. Anyway who says that English Div 3 is heaps better viewing than the NSL needs their heads read.

Brann Bergen. Had a great time with the fans there who were very keen to shout me drinks. I suppose they had to do something their team was rubbish.

Two and a bit words: Marco van Basten.

Forza Milan!

Ah but what did he do to Tony Adams at the 1988 European Championships?

He turned him inside out, crushed him, & then spat him out, poor old Tone didn't recover for years.:(

He turned him into the donkey.

Those eee-aww chants seemed like they'd last forever.

Anyway mate Arsenal & Milan you're obviously a man of impecibly good judgement.

Heartily concur about those superb dutch sides of the 70's- what about some of those goals Aarie Haan used to bang in from 40 yds out? Not to mention Neeskens, Cruyff, Rep, etc etc.

West Ham United- grew up watching them on Match of The Day in the 70's- what great skilful players they produced- Trevor Brooking, all class. Pat Holland, Clyde Best, Mervyn Day, Frank Lampard, etc etc. Gotta love that strip too. Not forgetting they also provided the backbone of England's World Cup winning side with Moore, Hurst and Peters.

But all is well when King Tone put two little fingers behind his head on that trip through Islington with the cup ... :D

You can't beat it, never in the history of football has there been anything like it, it wasn't a tactical system but a cultural statement.
I'm not big on buying old football videos I'm happier with the memories as they are in my mind, I don't actually want fact to interfere with my take on things but I happily make an exception for Holland in the 70s.

Truly glorious.

And Jonny Rep with that name he shouldn't have been a footballer he should have been fighting intergalactic battles alongside Flash Gordon & Buck Rogers.

it's got to be Wolves...i waited and waited (...and waited) for them to make it back to the premiership...i wasn't a fan, but it was good to see a team rewarded for their hard work and persistence...and it was also good to see them get a 5-0 flogging by Chelsea as well:D

I like to see Walsall going well. Well I did until the beggars beat us first go at the Bescot when they came up to the 1st Division! Cheeky sods! Still, now that Blues are shot of that hellish division I would hope the Saddlers manage to maintain their Div 1 status. I know Saddlers fans don't like it much that the fans of the big West Midlands clubs like to see 'em go well, but they're hard to dislike (until they beat you, that is)

I wouldn't mind it if the Saddlers, Baggies & Sky Blues came up this season. 6 West Midlands teams in the Premiership would be sensational - derbies just about every week!

west ham - keep pumping out star players only for the big clubs to come and rape them off them. ferdinand, lampard, cole, carrick and defoe will not last much longer, a real shame because a team based around them would challenge for the title in a couple of years

Yeovil Town dunno why played as them on a managerial game and have fallen in love with them always check their results and stuff

Well, we can only hope! But have to agree - when Coventry were relegated a few years ago, the only consolation was that there would be lots of Midlands derbies in the 1st Division - but then we went and lost them all.

As for teams I have a soft spot for - I used to go out with a girl from Avellino (when I was in Italy they were in Serie A and I even saw a game) and I've always followed their results since. In the English league I have soft spots for Hartlepool (managed them in Champ Manager), Sheffield Wednesday (have cousins who live there) and Bristol Rovers (like their shirts!). And I like AEK Athens because a mate of mine follows them.

Sunderland fan myself but like another poster have a soft spot for Leyton Orient. Went to a few matches at Brisbane Road when I lived in the UK, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was miles better than the NSL :)

Also lived in Belgium for a few months in Brugge. Adopted Cercle Brugge as my team due to my hatred of glory-hunter corporate clubs therefore Club Brugge was not an option. Cercle are the more traditional of the sides, having won the Belgian League 3 times in the 30's and have a large proportion of the Brugge market, regardless of what SBS and others would have you believe, who continually refer to Club Brugge simply as Brugge. That would cause riots in Brugge itself :)

Cercle won the Belgian Second Division last year, and are doing really well this year and are in 9th.

It's good to see a club finally making it after years off ****ing good money against the wall. When Barnsley made it into the premiership and the expense of Wolves the then Wolves manager Mark McGhee came out with something like this.

"The premiership deserves a big club like Wolves, not someone like Barnsley"

Cheer up Mark McGhee.

I spent a 6 month stint in England playing cricket and I lived in Plymouth. At the time the Green Army were in the 3rd division, flying here and winning the division. I used to go along and watch them every now and then. They won the division and are now sitting second in the 2nd division. I am pretty keen to see them do well. To think that a year ago, the side I support, Leeds, was in the Premier league and Plymouth in the 3rd div. now next season, they may be playing eachother in the 1st division.
