I've never heard of it before, but after a bit of research it looks it like may have originated from India.

However, the name Ajay (pronounced ah-jay), is much more common.

Pretty much. But the 'a' sound is soft in Ajay, compared to Arjay. It irritates me whenever I hear Ajay Rochester's name read out.

Reminds me of Philip Gidley King (third Governor of NSW) who had two illegitimate sons with a convict woman and he named them Sydney and Norfolk (He was stationed on Norfolk Island at the time).
