I wonder how much influence the UN Executive Director has on something like this...

If its preventable then why arent they cured...Because they dont have the money to buy the vaccine.

my guess the prime minister taking away 5 billion from the aid would not help matters

you're more than happy for people like sherri tenpenny to spread filth that gets children killed. don't pretend you actually care. you've already put your juvenile ideology before the health of children. well done.

personally i dont have a strong view on vaccination. a bit like abortion.

what i do feel strongly about -
is not banning discussion in general
be it pr0n, holocaust, vaccinations, cartoons that piss off terrorists etc.

What's the alternative, throw her in jail for her opinion?

Who is banning anything? Refusing a visa isnt a ban on speech.

Refusing her a visa is a reasonable start.

And if she happened to be an Australian citizen? Because we have plenty of our own anti-vaxxers.

The other obvious problem with this kind of measure is who gets to decide what speech is acceptable and what is not? Would you also ban Ayaan Hirsi Ali? What about Gerry Adams? What about Snoop Dogg?

Forming committees to decide what kind of things are acceptable to say is very dangerous. George Orwell wrote a book about it.

Adams and Snoop yes no problem with that

So we should consult you any time we need to know if someone should be allowed in?

That's great as long as you retain power. What happens in the future when someone you vehemently disagree with gets to exercise that power instead? That is why we don't make laws about speech.

So you have no problem with a Terrorist and a convicted felon being allowed here?

Probably a bad example. What about Geert Wilders then? He's never been convicted of a crime, but the previous Labor government tried to ban him from Australia.

I have no issues with people being prosecuted for their speech.

Sorry, i dont buy into all the slippery slope bollocks. If we're talking visas, it's a case by case basis and the federal govt has the authority. If i am unhappy with a decision there are options available for me to voice my displeasure. Given i dont hear of too many visa rejections i disagree with, im ok with how it's working.

Inside australia we have plenty of restrictions to speech, including civil. I don't really see the difference between being forced by the state to pay you compensation for spreading lies about you, and being forced to pay the state for spreading lies about vaccines.

And if the federal government decides it doesn't like you, then it can throw you in jail.

I would prefer not to live in such a society.

shrugs. like I said, I am not swayed by the slippery slope argument. real examples only.

There are no examples since the laws you favour do not exist and have been prevented from existing for hundreds of years by way of English Common Law's protection of political speech. But if you got your way then there would be examples.

so when you said the federal government can throw you in jail if it doesn't like you, you weren't referring to reality then. ok. sound argument.

No, I was referring to what would be possible if you got your way. That is pretty clear, to be honest. I even quoted you saying "I have no issues with people being prosecuted for their speech".

prosecuted doesn't necessarily entail being locked up, though. I even made reference to fines in my earlier post. note that not all claims would fall under protected political speech, and we do live in a country where people can be prosecuted for their speech.

And if you don't pay the fine?

depends on the jurisdiction, not sure about commonwealth law to be honest. but not sure how that's relevant to the discussion though? you can be imprisoned for not paying fines, but that doesn't mean you can be thrown in jail for not registering your dog.
