Seriously C-M what was so classy about this speech?

Blames everyone but himself, talks almost exclusively about his own life, doesn't give any explanation or sign of regret for a single thing he did to Richmond.

I don't know what you think he was meant to talk about? seriously?
I thought he was very introspective, dignified and respectful. he was sacked, and there wasn't a tone of recrimination or self pity.

can you name me a better resignation speech, because I think you've got blinkers on.

Again, missing the point of my posting in this thread. I all but said he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I recognise his abilities and achievements. However, this thread was started to celebrate his speech, which I thought was rubbish and exhibited the worst of what he displayed at Richmond. Sure they were an abomination when he got there but he had 4 and a half years to fix it up and I would argue he made it worse. He had the opportunity to turn that list around and he stuffed it, putting them back a fair way. Even worse is the timing of the thing - 2009's weak draft followed by 2 years of GC & WS concessions. That's why I think Craig McRae should take the job at least in the interim. They need to develop the squad they have before they even start thinking about finals again.

I didn't think it was an appropriate time to speak about the Bulldogs thing.
I appreciate why he hadn't spoken about it until now, but I didn't think it was particularly respectful to Richmond to speak at such length about that. He could have done it another time. That speech was about his resignation from Richmond. To speak so glowingly about an opposition club that you're about to play that weekend wouldn't sit right with me if I was a Richmond man. Though I must say I'm not entirely sure why.

Overall a fairly classy speech though. A few too many pats on his own back, but he's definitely copped a lot more than he deserved over the last few months in particular, so I'll allow him that.

Seems to me that Wallace could have said anything and people would have interpreted it as Wallace being self-serving.

Of course he was going to talk about himself, it was his retirement.

Of course he's going to try to dwell on positives, nobody wants to see a snivelling whinger talking about how bad things turned out.

Considering all that, he added enough class to his speech that it was good. I'm not necessarily saying he's an ace bloke but his speech was very good.

It was self-aggrandising and didn't address his shortcomings. Wallace only cares about Wallace and that presser showed it.

Yes, they were an abomination and then they had the opportunity to improve them significantly with some very deep cuts to the list, very high successive draft picks and a few handy top-up trades. He did not improve that team although he had all the chances in the world. That sets them back because that window of opportunity to improve the team is now gone, or at least far more difficult especially considering the next few years of the draft. Also there are a number of talented junior players who will have a hard time reaching their potential because of the type of club he has moulded and the soft outside game plan he devised.

Probably trying to recruit him for a job. And since when has the football media half a clue, they're the ones who pumped him up for the job in the first place.

Something about wanting credit for Western Bulldogs recruiting if he was to take the blame for Richmond's terrible recruiting?

Sam did let him off on that though - he needed to ask a question following on from recruiting regarding actual development of these younger players.

If he wants credit for the recruiting at Western Bulldogs, fair enough, but he wasn't involved in developing recruits into guns. At Richmond he's recruited alleged guns, and has, for the most part, over-seen them going backwards.


EDIT - Just went through Wiki; Bulldogs had a great draft in 2000, the rest of them were absolutely shithouse. The vast bulk of the players recruited under Wallace are no longer on the list, in 2000 they got Gilbee, Murphy, Giansiracusa & Hahn.

Seriously, Wallace is a joke; he gives the impression he's responsible for the state of the Bulldogs current playing list, but he has very little to do with it what so ever.

Lake certainly is a KPP, at 195cm. Hargrave is 190cm, which makes him shorter than Dangermouse. Murphy is only 186cm, which hasn't been KPP height since the 1960s.

Murphy is the prototypical Wallace player - 6'4", skilled outside midfielder, forced to play a role to which he is unsuited because of the deficiencies of their team list. That said, he's a very talented player and copes with the demands of playing as a KPF quite well.

Vader: Correct me if I'm wrong, but 186cm is 6'1", not 6'4". Agree with you on his role though. Murhpy reminds me much of Burton. Athletic, mid-sized forward who plays more of a key position due to deficiencies in his teams forward line. He's a very good player and I think most teams would be happy to have him in their 18, when fit.

I have to say that Wallace did his image absolutely no good by appearing on the Footy show to be interrogated by Sam.

He definitely did sound like a snake oil merchant as he struggled to give any straight answers at all.

Sam tried to get a straight answer out of him as to whether he had any commitment for the coaching job at Sydney and whether he was paid any money for that commitment not being honoured.

It was painful to hear him giving double answers all over the place as he tried to wiggle out of answering.

I'm not saying he lied but his answers were mis-leading, distracting and did nothing but harm his credibility.

Seems you're right about Dangermouse. For some reason I thought he was 191-192cm. Must have been thinking about Otten.

God was like Murphy, only better. Too short to play as a true KPP, but too good to get beaten on anything but the rarest of occasions.

Shudders to think that the AFC had this man in the running to be our next coach after Gary Ayres.

IMO, Terry Wallace comes across as a selfish and self-absorbed person, who would rather deflect the blame onto the playing group rather than accept any himself.

Wallace never rated the Crows at all at any time, and I would imagine that that attitude got through to the AFC when the possibility of Wallace becoming the Crows coach was being investigated.

The fact that Wallace really didn't want to coach the Crows is the biggest favour anyone from the VFL era has ever done the Crows. Lets not forget to be evermore thankful to Wallace for his long standing desire to have nothing to do with our club.
