Stil a 50 average season is not great...go back 5 years and you had players averaging 65+ per season and not getting in. Average season, helped by playing on the Road at Adelaide!

Only by those that dont read how he did this season.

There is merit to what you're saying - he definitely needs to improve his footwork to spinners (as do about 80% of other batsmen). But I doubt many coaches would be giving him a licence to dance at every spinner and just accept the stumpings. It's a learning process, not a decision to dance.

Look if he improves his footwork he can average 40+ in test cricket, but he will average under 30 if he doesn't. It is a massive difference, you use your feet you get more bad balls as it throws the bowlers off. As a good player of spin, you accept a stumping or two, the chances are you would hit the next 99/100 to the boundary.

Look if he improves his footwork he can average 40+ in test cricket, but he will average under 30 if he doesn't. Also taking in to account the lack of brilliant spinners in world cricket at present I think he can easily average 40+. I'd be willing to bet that, barring injury or mental breakdown, Hughes will average 45+ at the end of a very distinguished Test career.

Added to the fact that he's a "busy" batsman. He can rotate the strike well and seems to be able to work with the tail well the one time he batted with them. What our problem is that we don't have a stop gap #3 who we can plonk there for 2-3 years and wait for Handscomb/Burns/Maddinson to develop (Who I think Cossie should be)

Noted that you stepped past my statistical argument on Hughes as it doesn't suit you to argue with me on it.

As it stands, we should be rewarding those that have played well in the Shield so blokes like Hughes should be in the team.

How many cricketers had have avg 60+ seasons in 1st Class cricket.

Only Doolan,Hughes, Haddin & henriques avg over 50 + this season (only factored in those who played over 6 games).

Only 1 of those gents are in the team at present (Haddin)

Where did this magical 65 number come from?

Punter averaged mid 40s when he was selected for Aus. Clarke averaged just under 40. Huss never averaged more than 40 odd in Shield.

At Hughe's age Clarke had a first class batting average of 35.

Haddin at 6, that's a weak batting line up. Batting is our weakness already.

Good players of spin accept that stumpings are part and parcel of the game. You need to use your feet. Hughes is a terrible player of spin bowling, most people can see that. He needs to use his feet, smother the spin, and hit through the line, actually isn't that hard. I hope Hughes was watching Pieterson's masterclass on how to play spin- might have learnt a thing or two.

How can you be unfortunate to be LBW...hit the ball and stop entering chook lotto. You hit the ball you can't be given, otherwise you run the risk of the DRS.

Just because Bresnan wasn't given doesn't mean Hughes was unlucky. They were all out and fairly clearly too. He looked horrible against Swann, he needs to work on this for the next year or so. Get down the track, if you get stumped, so be it, but try this, you will be a lot more successful this way against spin. Cricket is a simple game, how many times against spinners is KP or Clarke hit on the pads? Rarely. Use your bat, score runs, get down the track. Then you are not running the gauntlet of terrible umpiring.

Okay, a bloke who's had half a good season at FC level, someone with less than half a dozen FC games and arguably the most inconsistent player in Australia.

65+?! You talk as if it's a cakewalk. One bad umpiring decision and your average would suffer greatly.

Anything over 50 is excellent.

We need continuity and certainty, especially with the kiddos.

Khawaja definitely needs to keep his spot, then he needs to spend the next six months in the nets taking on spin.

One issue though- I think we need to select bowlers with at least a half thought to their batting, because with the top order woes we can't afford a long tail. Principal suggestion in that regard is Starc should be ahead of Bird.

But here's the thing: Why does Usman deserve to have that faith shown in him? He was dropped 18 months ago and did not attempt to improve the flaws in his game while he was in exile, in contrast to Smith and Hughes who of course did. Usman seemingly took the view that because he was unlucky to get dropped - he was, he took Ponting's bullet - he did not have to improve his game, that he could just keep on being himself and not worry about the fact that his first taste of international cricket showed he had to improve other parts of his game, which is just about everything outside of his pull shot and leg glances.
