I'm trying to do a table. Does this forum have a table function?
Spacing with a character is the only practical way I've found over the years to make a table on a forum and, as you might imagine, it's still a bit of a drag

So the question is if there is an easy / easier way to create a table that displays properly?
If so, one way that works ok is using Excel and Word or equivalents:
(1) Create a copy of the tabular data you want to insert in Excel as shown below. You basically just need to insert a blank column to the left of your table. Enter table with the rectangular brackets in that new column in the header row.
(2) Between each column of your table, you also insert another blank column. Copy the symbol | into the top row and fill down for each column, see below
(3) Between each row, insert the symbol \ as shown below.
(4) At the bottom of the table, enter the slash table text with the rectangular brackets(signifying the end of the table).


(5) Copy the entire table, including the row and column markers etc., as shown below
(6) Paste special as unformatted text into Word. It will look something like this:

It will have heaps of tabs in it (the arrow symbol). Copy a tab and then use 'find and replace'. You paste the tab into the 'find what' cell and leave the 'replace with' cell blank. Then click on 'replace all'.


Then the table text will look more like this:


Copying and pasting into BigFooty should then yield:

Melbourne used to be HEAPS colder.

I found this on another forum.....after I put it there. Below is a list of every sub-10 degree day in Melbourne on record!!

As a wank'ar bike rider, I have an interest in the weather, for obvious reasons. Last year I found the holy grail of weather stats, which is the data for every day on record for every Aus station going back about 160 years, depending on the location

One wet day last October, I went through the stats and recorded every sub-10 degree Melbourne day.

Melbourne had heaps more sub-10 degree days before about 1970 than we do now, and we also had more in June and other 'outlier' months.
I can't even remember Melbourne having a really cold day in June. Here are some things I noticed:

1) Melbourne has only had one sub-10 degree June day since 1967 (in 1990), but between 1900 and 1949 we had 53!!
2) In the last 50 years Melbourne has had only 25 days under 10 degrees, yet in the 50 years between 1900 and 1949 we had 114, and between 1855 and 1900 there were 145.
3) Between 1900 and 1956, we had 17 days below 8 degrees, but in the 62 years since then, we've had only 4
4) Check out 1901, 1908, 1911, 1918, 1943, 1944 and 1945! Boy boy wow wee!!
Nine days under 10 degrees in 1901 ( including our coldest day on record of 4.4), 1908 and 1945.
5) Not only did Melbourne have many more days under 10, we also had more under 8 and 9, and even a few under 7.

There are other "interesting" points, but I can't find where I wrote them. Ha. No, I couldn't figure out how to do a table. The gaps are there because I initially missed a few, and including them in order without gaps would've meant heaps more farking around.

Some may question the accuracy of thermometers in the old days but, from what I can find, due to mercury thermometers being such a rudimentary device, accuracy wasn't a problem. Some say that any problem getting accurate data in the old days was more about the reliability of the people keep records (checking it often enough, etc) than about the instruments.

Understood and not interested in arguments. Was only pointing out that the original example linked to will confuse some as it has four columns in body rows, but only one in header. It leads to it displaying with a single column, which some won't understand. With col 1, col 2 etc. added in as per your post here, it will display fine and is a better illustration of what I assume you wanted to show than what you linked to. Might as well replace it there.
