Eddie Paynter

A late start to his first class career and the start of WW2 limited him to just 20 matches(Average of 59) but during that time he managed some impressive achievements. Of those 20 matches, 7 were against Australia and he averaged 84 in those games, often when England were in trouble. Also a great fielder for the day.
Does the last pick have to be 12th man or can we nominate that once we're done?

ASAIK the last pick can be in the XI as long as you have the nationalities all covered in the XI and not hiding as 12th. ;)

I'm all set there luckily already thanks to Steyn's secret NZ days that I uncovered.

Bill Ponsford

Of how many people could you say that a batting average of 48 would be a poor indicator of his true batting abilities? Such a statement applies to Bill Ponsford. His first class average of 65 is far more indicative of his absolute dominance with the bat, for he was the massive Australian accumulator before Bradman. His average of 48 is a result of series where he suffered from tonsilitis, a broken hand, and Bodyline. When playing unfettered, his average is a far more agreeable 64.81, on par with his first class record, and a measure of the immense talent of this man.

Pfft, sounds like a soft**** to me. ;)

Give me a few mins...still need to grab a spinner and keeper. :D

Time to grab a keeper/opener/Pakistani...this is a very tactical pick due to the fact he fills all 3 of those requirements, and his style of play is very much suited to this competition.

HANIF MOHAMMAD (+)

While few would have heard of this man, he was known as the original 'Little Master', and the first real star of Pakistan cricket. His one massive record, however, is the fact that he holds the longest ever test innings...yes, of all time. An amazing 337 runs against the West Indies in 1957-59, in a whopping 970 minutes...a bit over 16 hours. His concentration levels were through the roof, as he followed up this effort with a first class effort of 499 (run out) only a year later.

His stats by themselves are impressive alone, with an average of 44 and 12 hundreds; but it is more his versatility and manner of play which made him an invaluable bargain pick for my XI.

And, to round out my starting XI, the legendary spinner...

BISHEN BEDI

Bishan-Singh-Bedi.jpg

Bedi is an all-time great of Indian cricket. His stats are excellent - 266 wickets in 67 tests at an average of 28 to go with his record of 1560 FC wickets. He had an aura about him whilst bowling, much like the likes of Shane Warne and Muralidaran. His cunning bowling and clever thinking on the field make him an absolute dream to include in my XI.

The purity and perfection of Bedi's art was a connoisseur's dream. He was stealthy, silent and deadly, a master of deception who conjured variations in flight, loop, spin and pace without any perceptible change in action. He bowled with a big heart too, challenging the batsman to hit over the top by giving the ball plenty of air, and was a consistent wicket-taker for most of his career. Helped by a successful county stint with Northamptonshire, he finished with 1560 first-class wickets, more than any other Indian bowler.

Bhagwath Chandrasekhar
WAuM8.jpg
The surprisingly unheralded spinner of the Indian foursome, Chandrasekhar was a match winner at heart. Unlike that spud Bedi, Chandrasekhar could actually take wickets on a fairly regular basis, and was in fact regarded as the key to India's chances of winning. Importantly, he could bowl well away from home, unlike his ancestor-in-spirit Anil Kumble, who presumably thought that the only pitches that mattered were in India. Chandrasekhar forms a formidible spin duo with Bill O'Reilly, both of whom bowl the best type of spin bowling there is.

The "Unselected XI" just got a lot weaker.
