Ricky Ponting

You've just gotten an opener out and ready to rip out the middle order. Short and fast you go, looking to put the fear in the new batsman. That is, until you're hooked well and truly over the square leg boundary. And that was his first ball. Ricky Ponting is the number 3 batsman of the modern era, and despite his recent doubters - still averages a resounding 52.75 with 41 hundreds. Captain of Australia through one of it's most successful and later tumultuous eras, Ponting has rightly earned plenty of fans.

MAHELA JAYAWARDENE
124637.jpg

133 Tests, 10,540 Runs @ 50.43

Sri Lanka's greatest ever batsman. A veteran who's grinded out 31 centuries across a long and remarkable career, including an incredible 374 against South Africa in 2006. Many will point to his superior record on the flat tracks of Sri Lanka in comparison to steady performances abroad, but with centuries in every Test nation except South Africa he has been a reliable and elegant contributor for Sri Lanka. It was this guy or Ranatunga.

RAHUL DRAVID
135491.jpg

164 Tests, 13,288 Runs @ 52.31

I lost a bit of sleep deciding between Dravid v Sehwag. But when under pressure, Dravid is surely more likely to come up with the goods, and on a more regular basis. In the shadows of Sachin for most of his career, he has quietly gone about his ways accumulating formidable performances at home and abroad, including an average of almost 70 in England. Put on a ridic display with VVS at Eden Gardens that will always be remembered, as well as his work ethic and concentration. Perhaps not quite 'The Wall' in my opinion after being bowled 54 times in his career, but one of the all-time greats nonetheless. Has a Test wicket and didn't mind taking a catch or 210. I wouldn't mind if he married my daughter.

Virender Sehwag

Stevemac's mentioning of Sehwag prompted me to look into him a little closer. Wow! For a man of little footwork, he sure has the results to warrant his unique style. An average of 50.64 with 22 hundreds and a high score of 319 is nothing to belittle. An opening batsman with an immense eye and ability to thrash opening bowlers to all parts (sixes over point a common highlight), Sehwag has not only piled the runs on, but done it at an amazing strike rate of 82.17 in test cricket. With a strong middle order, I have the luxury to place a dasher at the top - and there are few better than Sehwag at the peak of his powers.

I think Imran just sits out. If he goes back in at this stage is probably going to be too much of a boost to whichever team gets him.

I was thinking either that or a "highest bidder" thing. Whoever bids the best player to go back into the draft gets Imran.

But having him sit out is probably easier (even though it deprives us all of a very good player).

This guy is going to be hard to beat.
Torz team certainly will be hard to beat. Especially as it appeals to those voting who only have recent times in mind. Something I probably should of thought about more when picking my team.
