I did a little count and it's like 38 of 68 players in the teams played in the 2000s. Just seems hard to put aside memory of players who we've seen play in favour of someone who might have been better back in the day.

Don't blame me, only 2 of mine are in that category. (Apologies, 3. Can you believe Walsh played from 1984 to 2001? What a machine!)

It makes sense a lot of batsmen are taken from recent times as pitches have become very flat and mundane, making runs easier to come by. Makes the likes of Pollock, Sobers, Crowe and Sutcliffe inspired choices really.

Part of the reason for it is because of the forced selection of players from certain countries, who invariably have most or all of their best players playing recently.

Plus it's hard to determine whether or not older players are a good fit for your team if you've hardly seen them. Stats show some of the story, but it's easier to pick players you know a bit about.

Tillakaratne Dilshan​

This is where it gets difficult. The Sri Lankan pool has been picked clean and I'm left trying to fit squares into round holes. Dilshan is a talented player, his flamboyant yet solid technique see's him thrashing the ball through the offside with regularity. He averages 41.21 with 14 hundreds and 21 fifties but also gives you dynamic fielding and serviceable off-spin bowling (Over 100+ wickets in test and FC). For now he'll sit at the number 6 position, but may be the swing-man once my 12th man is decided.
