He won around 6 games off his own bat this summer across all 3 formats as a 22 yo, captaining his state to their first shield final in 20 years. There's a ton to like about him, pretty good option to be taking on tours etc, will only help him improve.

Don't get too hung up on his average, that's not why CA rate him. Average reflects his inconsistencies not his great innings' he's played in his short career. He's a guy they want to help develop, he's not being picked because he is 36yo who dominates state cricket.
We are talking about the Shield cricketer of the year, so the other formats have nothing to do with it.

I'm not hung up over his career average.
But how can a guy average 36 for the season and win cricketer of the year?

Voting process. 3-2-1. He had a few match-winning innings' among there.

I believe it was voted in a 3-2-1 vote style. Same kinda way Ablett can nearly win a brownlow after only playing in half the matches. Head was inconsistent so may as well have only played half the matches. When he was good, he was really good.

Fair enough. I'd hardly pick him for a test series off he back of that though.

I think he's a fine young prospect, but I'm surprised he's even being talked about for test cricket just yet.

Fortunately he has signed with Yorkshire so should get more experience

Handscomb backup middle order, Bancroft backup top order, Shaun Marsh I would have 3rd in line, could potentially fill both areas.

Head should not be close. Unless he absolutely kills it at Yorkshire, which I think is highly unlikely at the moment.

Handscomb is the most logical option for a reserve middle order batsman
Where's the logic? SMarsh is the incumbent reserve (interesting term, I know), had a Test average of 70 over the summer with a last score of 182, Shield average of 47 to Handscomb's 43.

Unless he has ruled himself out (and I thought he was only ruled out of the ODIs), then he's the logical reserve.

Giving an opportunity to a younger bloke who has put together a few good seasons and shows a lot of promise against spin.

I like SOS but no need to go back to the the 32 year olds

The team is young enough, I don't see a need to constantly play the next young thing, especially when SMarsh reasonably has three to four years left. He has a better record than Handscomb in the past two, probably three, Shield seasons, found good form over summer and has international experience. I think he's the first choice reserve bat, no question.

Handscomb would be fighting with Bancroft for second reserve, he might get a gig ahead of Bancroft if they think SMarsh can double as cover for the openers as well.
