I'd definitely think so. Would imagine he'd go straight in unless they opt for previous international experience.
If Doolan is in the 14-man squad for Sydney but left out of a 15-man squad for South Africa, you'd have to ask what changed in the interim. Given there's no FC cricket to be played, it would be hard to explain leaving him out of that squad, having included him in the squad for the fifth Test.

On what basis could another batsman overtake him?

Maybe that he was chosen in case of a specific injury, eg if Watson didn't come through and it was deemed to play a batsman rather than an all-rounder, and that somebody else provides broader cover. Or that someone else is deemed better suited to South African conditions and a genuine pace attack.

It seems like he will go on the tour, but the excuses (or reasons) for choosing different players in different circumstances are there.

Surely Bailey wont be going now.
It's interesting. If we drop Bailey from the squad we'll have to bring two new batsmen into the squad. Doolan will tour but I'm not sure who the second would be. There seems to be a few players they'd prefer to have playing shield instead.

Bailey should be on the top of that list, it's the best place for him to learn how to play on the off side.

Have to get some youngsters in for the batting.

Unfortunately for the players England have been that bad how seriously can you take Australian players performances??

I think Haddin, Johnston, Harris , maybe Lyon, Clarke, possibly Warner, Smith have earn't spots.

Think some of the players may need to play Sheffield shield to prepare them for SA by playing tougher cricket

That's pretty unconvincing.

A specific injury? What does that mean? He was picked as the back-up specialist batsman in Sydney so why not for the tour to South Africa?

Bailey doesn't have a test future. I think they're more concerned about Maddinson, Lynn, Silk etc playing Shield cricket instead of running out the drinks

Pretty much unproven . It was against England FFS!! It counts for nothing:p

ahead of Bailey though!;)

Unproven? As opposed to all the proven Test batsmen waiting in the wings?

The selectors considered him the next in line. I don't know what could happen before they name the squad for South Africa for that view to change.

I expect this to be the squad:

Warner
Rogers
Watson
Clarke
Smith
Bailey/Doolan/Hughes/North (2 of these 4 will go, I think Doolan will be one of them but not 100% sure)
Haddin
Johnson
Harris
Siddle
Lyon

Bailey/Doolan/Hughes/North (again, I think 2 of these 4 will tour and two will miss out)
Faulkner
Pattinson
Bird/Coulter-Nile (1 of these 2, pending fitness)

I would go with the same team just with watto at 6 with bailey out and doolan at 3.

Glad bailey got to play in an ashes win, top bloke great short leg fielder but he ain't a test match bat and if we ignore that we have collapsed in every first innings in this series and got bailed out by haddin then it will cost us in SA.

You fall to 5/100 odd vs steyn and philander in every test and you won't get back in the game very often.

Agreed. Doolan will almost certainly play barring injury or selectors lovechild Shaun Marsh dominating the ODIs.

Doolan to 3 and Watson to 6 seems the minimal change that is likely.
