I wonder where Tex sits in our greatest ever players.

He’s been top 10 for some time but I think he’s now potentially worked his way up as high as top five.

Obviously McLeod is number one. Most would say Roo at number two. Then we’re talking the likes of Modra, Hart, Jarman, Goodwin, Rehn. Betts and Edwards as well. Walker clearly fits right in with these names.

Where would you have him?

I think he is third. Would be happy if someone put him at 2nd.

Nigel should be in there too

I put a lot of value on how fun it has been to watch a player. Tex has been so good, for so long. Kicking amazing long clutch goals, amazing long handpasses, amazing field kicking, dummies, f50 ruck work, just genuinely elite footy skills. Joy to watch.

My memory of Macca is fading a bit, but on entertainment value over time it’s hard to split McLeod, Walker and Betts for me.

Modra's entertainment value surpasses all of them I think, he just didn't do it for as long

Is there any chance of someone within the Vic media bringing up Tex's 300th when discussing build up to this game instead of banging on about a 'feral crowd'? I can't remember such a lack of mention about a major milestone from a star player.

Yes, this will be interesting to see if anyone pays due respect to Tex.

Negligent if they don’t.

I think once the dust settles Tex is more in the conversation around a top 10 great than a top 5.

Thats not to be confused with who your favourite player is.

Its hard to judge, some of the 97/98 guys as they are always elevated (rightly so) because of the premierships but I think Mcleod and Roo stand above everyone.

Rehn was always so consistently great. For me he is the most underrated of our past players and I'd have him clearly at three.

I think the records show Modra has Tex covered.

Guys like Goodwin, Hart, Smart, Edwards are hard to split I find. Jarman and Eddie were great for their moments as much as for their careers. I think Tex probably fits somewhere in this group which puts him around the top 10.

Once the recency bias is gone I think to be a genuine club great you need to have multiple accolades at a competiton level (Premierships, Colemans, multiple All Australians) or things like best and fairest. Over time not having those will probably count against him when you are ranking players.

I forgot Sloane but I think those I mentioned have him covered. The way Dawson is going he will be well and truly in this group.

I honestly have no idea how much a player's 300th should be mentioned a couple of days out from a qualifying final. Given the other stories around this game, I'm not surprised at all. I think the talk about Tex will increase as we get closer to the game, particularly following selection.

I haven't placed Danger, too difficult.

Roo/Macca
Rehn/Hart/Smart
Jarman/Modra/Goodwin/Edwards/Tex
Betts/Sloane/Bickley/Thommo

Rookie numbers, I was calling for his head halfway through this season.

He did hit a bit of a wall around the bye.. Seeing him unable to bench press off a smaller opponent and mark an easy (by his standards) ball in Launceston late in the game made me think he was done.

I think part of his revival has been taking away the more strength based aspects of his game.

No more F50 Rucking.

What if he played a significant part in helping win a flag this finals series?

Still doesn't get close.

Those two are heads and shoulders above Tex - even if he kicks 20 and the norm smith.

They are all 300+ gamers.

McLeod 340 games, 3 B&F, 2 norm smith, 5 time AA,
Roo - 312 games, 3 B&F, 1 Brownlow, 8 time all Australian.

Tex - 300 games, 0 B&F, 1 time all Australian. His resume (footy wise) is probably a bit behind Goody & Ben Hart's, but his impact on the Club has been bigger IMO which means he is a clear 3rd.

I think I did these rankings for top 10 Crows in 2023. Might have slightly changed.

My Top 10:

Tier 1 - Roo, Macca
Tier 2 - Walker
Tier 3 - Goody, Hart, Modra, Jarman
Tier 4 - Rehn, Betts, Edwards.

Yeah that’s pretty fair.
