Toast Tex 700 goals around the corner

Unfortunately, I don't think he is going to get to 700 goals.

And the way he is moving, I would be disappointed if the club limped him to 300 games

A true legend of the club but he cant play every game this year.
It was terrible management yesterday to play him.
It looks like another case of the tail wagging the dog
They'll get him there, which is a big issue.

Simply cannot play next weekend

Collingwood are our boggy team. I remember sitting at Football Park in a preliminary final in 2002 where we were odds on to get into the GF, and the Pies bashed us.
2002??

You mean the year where Brisbane belted us in Qualifying final at the Gabba
We then beat Melbourne at MCg in SEMi
Before Collingwood beat us at MCg in prelim

You'd hope the conversation is being had. He's a defensive liability. Has to ability to body his way to a few marks and kick a few goals but is also a non-entity if he loses possession or has a fall.

We know what he was capable of, but it's feeling like a Thommo in 2017 situation. You're a champion, and one of our greats, but our team should be selected for who will get us to finals, and who will win a final. Do we trust 2025 Tex in a finals game?

You mean Thommo in 2016 where he played very, very well in the first few rounds but could barely get into a half run for most of the final 3/4 of the year. 2017 he got a pity extension for instead of keeping Lyons and played that 1 awful game at AO after bleating on radio how frustrating it was playing 2s as soon as he cracked 25 touches. Tex won't go out like that though. Tex probably knows his body is done and unless we hear of 'other club offers' after he kicks 4 this week, I reckon he's going to go out with grace.

I think Tex isn’t quite done, as evidence by him being a leading scorer in a recent game. I do, however, think he should be rested more in wet weather. I think the game is a tad too fast for him currently, and his skills will be less effective if wet weather. He is still valuable if weather is dry, as he is still a handy kick anywhere within the 50m arc, while a decent chop with rucking up forward and snapping for goals.

Wet games are slower….

What's with this boards constant want to retire this star?

Getting closer to the end but people been calling for his head for years. Was pretty shocked he offered little in those kind of conditions.

Still on track for a 40 goal season, I'm sure the replacement waiting in the wings is just as capable though.

I don't think I've seen many people want to retire him, but the club said during the summer they'd have to manage him through the season.

They really haven't done that

Agreed on the note of managing his load/games played. Was hoping it would come a few weeks ago, was wondering if there was any plans and the Fog/Thilthorpe injuries have meant he's played when we may have rested? Wishful thinking based on our track record imo.

I think he's still got a lot to contribute.

I do like how reactionary we are on this board though. Always good talking points. If we went through staff at my work the way we want people in and out of the team at the crows, we'd go through 500 people a year.

Anyway.... we are not managing him with rests, like we said we would. He looks off the pace the last 2 weeks. Rest him vs west coast. He'd still FIYAH when he's fit.

I just can't see our club telling Tex to retire... we didn't march Brodie Smith out last season

For whatever reason our club's relationship with past players seems to be quite distant compared to other clubs. The optics of marching one of our all-time fan (and player) favourites out would likely drive that wedge further away. I just can't see it happening.

Having said that, I think his best is still good enough - but he shouldn't have played on Sat and definitely needs a rest this week. Time is approaching but there's still a little bit of life left yet.

Yep, Hawks totally imploded on and off field after forcing Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis out. You’re basically wanting us to remain a weak and feeble club. We need to be doing the exact opposite of what you reckon we should do.

Read it again. Never said what I think should happen, only what I expect we'll do.

Well he’s proven me wrong and I’m sure a lot of others - was joint-leading goal scorer and in the extreme wet and windy conditions - 3 goals.

Tex in the last one month has been regaining form and consistency:
Tigers: 2 goals
Dees: 2 goals
Dogs: 2 goals
Suns: 2 goals
Port: 3 goals

Tex currently on 672 goals. Can he get to 700 this season? Would be bloody great if he can!

Also Tex to 700 isn’t just about the personal milestone. If he gets there this year, it will surely boost our chances of going very very deep this season.

He has been solid, I am not too fussed about goals, players can benefit from down the ground frees, 50m or other ones that are not an indication of form. Only really the Dogs and Sun games that you can make an assessment on. We weren't up against much in some of those other games.

I think his general involvement in play has improved from earlier in the year. He was getting out marked as well which has also improved.

I think it's age but I feel like his kicking for goal is still a bit hit and miss compared to what it was.

The club raising the expectations on his work the during the week has helped. Part of the deal to play on was that he would need to do the work on the track and I think that has paid off as he looks fitter.

He's still a really valuable contributor to the team. Clean hands, clean disposals off one step is all he needs... He might have overestimated his own capability earlier in the year (failed don't argues etc.) but i think he's adjusting to his physical limitations as the year goes on. This is a fourth iteration of Tex now, twilight Tex, but he's still bringing plenty to the table.

If he can keep it at 2-3 goals per game for the rest of the season it doesn’t just justify his spot but will be enormous for the momentum of our season.

I think you said it well. He’s modifying his game to his current body, and it’s still bringing good results.
Certainly the notion of him being futile in the wet weather is an inaccurate one, as mentioned his 3 goals last night and a leading goal scorer in a previous extremely windy/wet game around 2 months ago, I think against GWS.
