Millions of cars on the road every day. Probably about 50% to 75% of them text while driving. All up tho regardless of the percentage who text and drive there's probably about 50 accidents every day nationwide. And maybe 1 fatality a day. You say 20% of accidents caused by distractions of all kinds not just texting. So maybe 10 accidents per day from distractions. Say half from texting. So 5 a day nationwide.

I text/talk/browse Instagram while driving but thats because I can do it with no problems. Some people can't manage doing 2 things at once so they should steer clear of it.

Is that the reason why people can't drive manual cars?

I try not to text while driving because I am far-sighted so texting requires me to really focus, which is not really ideal when you're behind the wheel. Don't feel distracted talking on the phone or to someone in the car etc. at all.

The problem is to effectively text and drive you hold your phone at the top of the steering wheel, that way you see everything. With these laws you have to be discreet and hold your phone out of sight/in your lap making it more difficult to look at the road at the same time.

I can only find comprehensive stats from the United States but I imagine the percentages would stay roughly the same. 28% of accidents on U.S. roadways involve talking on a mobile phone or texting[1]. The United States has around 6.5 million crashes each year, making mobile phones related to 1,820,000 crashes each year (or 4986 a day).

According to who? Nobody gave a shit when I was over there. Everyone was using their phones for texting and other stuff.

People are funny sometimes. They go for a drive and get into a full text conversation with a person.

Why not just call the person? I seriously have no issue with people talking on phones provided that they're not dialing while driving but seriously, texting shouldn't happen.

On the way to and from work I drive through a few school zones. It's way too easy to lower your eyes for a couple of seconds and not see somebody dart out in front of you. Not worth it for a run-of-the mill text. As others have said, touch phones make it much more difficult than something like changing radio channels.

Never made any spelling errors when I had my old Nokia with keys. And like others have said, could type a msg out barely looking at the screen.

With these, especially with auto spell, many mistakes are now made.

All smart phones now have voice typing anyway. For texts as well as tapatalk etc. Anytime the keyboard is opened. There are flaws with this system too but its a gas

I dont really like people who text and drive because they suck at it.To busy texting at the lights,light goes green oh still texting grr.Walk across a crossing almost get run over bye someone texting.

Btw- driving home last night really wanted to listen to my Ipod. I had to get it out of my handbag, hook it up to my car stereo, then proceed to find song/s I wanted to play.

Imo, this was more dangerous than texting. Could I get fined for that??

Yep.. it comes up with words that aren't real words too. The food one really gives me the IRATES though.

In WA yes it is an offence to touch your phone whilst driving and have it in your lap. Certain things define say a GPS in legislation which you are able to touch if it is cradled. Not sure about Victoria..

Oh, yeah I did kinda see that, but typed phone by default. Again, it would be an offence here; they don't specify phone per se and what is an offence, more what _is_ acceptable and isn't an offence eg phone operating as GPS in cradle, or Tomtom etc.

Couldn't see you getting done doing it at traffic lights though, that would be just spiteful!
