More of a speech issue, because I can spell it correctly when writing/typing, but I always seem to ask my housemates for the the Vietmanese restaurant menu, rather than Vietnamese

It annoyed my ex-girlfriend to no end - I know that I say it wrong, but unless I explicitly think about it, I pretty much always say it wrong

/off-topic

Not really, in the same vain as texting is dangerous while driving, so is arguing with someone in a car. Had my fair share of close calls with psycho ex's why you did this and why you did that. Hmmmm. Not saying I was innocent lol.

I got busted by a cop and got a $160 fine last summer for texting while stopped at a traffic light. It is a stupid thing to do and that helped me learn my lesson. Nothing is really that urgent.

Yeah the threat of a fine stops me as well. I think we've bumped it up to around $300 now.

I catch a bus to work and the amount of people you see driving with their phone resting in their lap, waiting to text and texting whilst driving is scary.

People who walk and text and not watch where they are going could be another thread all together!

Don't touch the phone whilst driving. :thumbsu:

Do answer and put it on speaker but. Don't tell Stratts

One thing that has always bugged me about the mass hysteria (for want of a better term) over people talking/texting on the phone while driving - is it really any more dangerous than fiddling with the radio, cd player, ac settings etc? People have been doing this since before mobile phones became so popular - are there laws against doing this while driving (serious question, I'd have no idea)?

You could even argue that those activities are even more dangerous, since they pretty much require you to look down every time, whereas talking on the phone allows you to still watch the road, and when texting you can keep the phone higher, allowing you to quickly dart your eyes across, rather than lower your entire head.

Not trying to downplay the risks, it is obviously dangerous (though, if I were to give my personal opinion, I don't think it is necessarily as bad as it is made out to be, depending on the situation), just think the comparison might make for interesting discussion.

That said, if there are laws against fiddling with the radio et al whilst driving, you can probably ignore this entire post!

I have no respect for anyone who texts while driving. I don't give a shit if they want to put their own lives in danger but to be so reckless that they choose to put the lives of others in danger really pisses me off.

Too many things are already banned around the world/australia. Need to unban more things.

Texting while driving is not one of them. Fool's game.

speaking on the phone, sure.

but texting on the phone is probably the most risky thing i can think of to be doing on the road.

changing the ac/radio most people do by feel, and if u make a mistake you know where the buttons are. texting requires you to actually look at a very small screen.

i'm pretty sure i'd rather 100% of drivers be mashed than 100% of drivers be texting.

How many million people text multiple times while driving every day, across the entire nation?
vs
How many people actually have a crash or even die from texting while driving?

How many incidents of texting while driving total
divided by
actual crashes/deaths from texting.
You tell us?

If you can't ascertain that it is an inherently risky practice with potential to cause death or injury that I lose some hope for the fate of mankind

It's not banned in the US, just frowned upon
According to who? Nobody gave a shit when I was over there. Everyone was using their phones for texting and other stuff.

People are funny sometimes. They go for a drive and get into a full text conversation with a person.

Why not just call the person? I seriously have no issue with people talking on phones provided that they're not dialing while driving but seriously, texting shouldn't happen.

I remember when phones weren't touchscreen and had buttons. I could text and drive all day long whilst keeping my eyes on the road. Now I struggle big time, so I tend not to. Only time is whilst at lights and/or stopped anywhere else.

I still read them though.

Agree. Tactile keypad is the important needed thing in future.

I text/talk/browse Instagram while driving but thats because I can do it with no problems. Some people can't manage doing 2 things at once so they should steer clear of it.

Hate laws/attempts to punish the majority for the sins/ills of the few.

I find eating while driving harder than texting.
No sometimes I eat on while driving even though I shouldn't but can still concentrate on the road because my eyes are still on the road. texting while driving you are looking at your phone typing in the letters, way more dangerous.
