Hi, my teeth are in a bit of a state and are at the point now where I need to bite the bullet (pardoning the pun) and set aside my phobia of dentists to get them fixed up. Was wondering if anyone could offer any experiences of having treatment done in Thailand as I've read it seems to be gaining in popularity.

Given my limited funding and the steep costs to get dental work done in Oz I'm looking at all options.

Probably needing at least one extraction + some fillings + some gaps filled which I think would ruin me financially if I was to have it done here.

Any recommendations welcomed.

Getting sick of relying on Panadol + Nurofen to function...

I would avoid doing the Thailand or Asian medical surgery like the plague. Just don't do it, the risks are too great.

However saying this, you can do whatever you like, you can choose to take any or as little advice as you like - its your life.

Now, with your dental phobia, limited funds and the need to have some sort of emergency dental surgery, my advice would be avoid overseas treatment at all cost. Just don't do it. The risk you are potentially taking and payoff isn't worth the benefits of doing it.

You have to potentially look at any sort of infection, the after dental care you will need, any langugage barrier thst could cause a disruption to your exact needs and any follow up treatment to fix any further needs you could have.

I wouldn't do it.

Do you have an Australian issued pension card? If you do, you are entitled to free dental care with qualified dentist or get the work done by a university student who is looking for experience (still better as you have a qualified dentist checking all the work) if the surgery is deemed an emergency or life threatening.

If you don't, you can still talk to a dentist and arrange a payment plan or have your surgery part by part and get the dental care you require done over time if you can not afford to do it one step at a time.

Any sort of surgery has somer risk to them, I wouldn't mess around with that stuff that don't have the same standards as we do.

Know a guy who went to the Philippines and had no issues, he said he had about $2000 worth of work done which cost him about $500 over there.

Just make sure you do your research, on the Whirlpool forum there is a thread where some people have talked about the experiences, maybe you could ask them for some advice.

Yep, I had 2 teeth extracted in Bangkok last year whilst there and everything was fine. Just got to do some research, like everything there are dodgey people out there
 
Thanks for the replies folks. Definitely will be doing plenty of research as it's not something I want to rush into blindly.
 
The amount dentists charge here is enough to my eyes water. Bunch of rip-off merchants. I've been to a dentist once since I left high school, and even a regular old scale and clean +exam cost a relative arm and leg. I have myriad problems with my teeth (some my own carelessness and hedonism, some genetic issues) that I'd love to get fixed at some point that are only going to get worse (eg need crowns on my front upper teeth, have a noticable underbite, in the early stages of gum disease) and would love to get them fixed for something slightly less than a small third world economy. So whenever I get a proper full time job, first thing I'll be saving up for instead of a better car will be to fix the chompers in some overseas country because well, a massive middle finger to the money hungry thieving dentists in Australia.

At my current part time job, I deliver pizzas in say a lower socioeconomic area of Perth, and the condition of some peoples teeth are far worse than mine. I regularly see people with most of their teeth missing, advanced gum disease, random rotting and/or chipped teeth. Dentists here are an absolute disgrace for having the conscience of letting people live with teeth in that condition because they simply cant afford their exorbitant prices. The government is also to blame for not providing sufficient means for these people to be treated and not reining in the egomaniacal dental industry by at least making them sign on to medicare in at least some shape or form.
 
Thailand has an awesome and amazingly professional dental industry.

Source: got thousands of dollars of work done there, still saved money while having a holiday.

Edit: that said, I wouldn't just go to the first dentist you find off the plane in Bangkok. Do some research into someone that comes well recommended and you can't go too wrong. Got mine done in Chiang Mai, they have a great scene up there.

Hey mate this could have been me writing this five years ago its quite funny you seem to have the same issues that I had...did you end up getting the work done?

I had a massive phobia of seeing a dentist and the first time I EVER went to the dentist was when I went to Thailand in my 30's. I highly recommend having the work done in Thailand as you can save 5 times the cost of what you pay here....the dentists over there are American trained so all you have to do is go to a big dental place....and I don't think infection was ever an issue and I wasn't that careful with what I ate or drunk.

I went over for a holiday and also got laser surgery on my eyes as well. I have a mate over there who owns a resort in Phuket and he looked after me driving me around when I was blind. Just get a nice cheap resort in the back-blocks and have a nice relax you'll be right...the massage girls will look after you and help you to relax if you need it haha. The laser eye people were also American trained and I did plenty of research and there is nothing at all wrong with the Thai medical industry (if you go to reputable places) in fact I thought in a way they were more considerate, professional and willing to help than anyone here in Australia.

I ended up having 2 extractions (a few wisdom teeth) 9 fillings and a teeth whitening and the phobia I had was completely unfounded. There was no pain at all either while having it done or later. I recommend getting it done as soon as possible in your situation as I was lucky and avoided any decay deep into the tooth....the longer you leave it you may not be so lucky and what I hear root canals are not pain free.
 
Dental Holidays? Other Holidays? Just Do it.

In a Nanny state like Australia we are sold the illusion of safety if you follow some useless regulations and petty laws but no such thing exists.

My recommendation = Go to Thailand. Have a blast.
 
Ive never heard anything but good stories about people who went to Thailand
I think there are more dental implants put in in Phuket than anywhere else on earth
Local girl had the works done 20 g plus in Aust was the quote about 4 and a bit in Thailand
5 years later its still good
Go to a proper place they might not be the cheapest but its still cheaper than Australia

I have good teeth but thought I'd check one out while I was there. The whole setup was top notch. If I needed extensive work, I wouldn't hesitate.
 
They were talking about this last night on MMM nightshift and it's becoming a very popular thing to do for Australians.

Someone rang up and said they were quoted 30,000 by a dentist in Australia, got a quote in Thailand for the same thing at 3,000.

Had no issues at all.

I would make sure its a real one in Nam there are good ones there and guys who rent a shop and have a go,
Go to one that has done people you know and are happy with the results.
I met an Australian/Viet there when I was on holiday he was getting his teeth done but dont know where?
also a Girl on the plane on the way home had a bit done there too.

You need to get rid of this phobia. It's just that dental problems are serious. If you don't solve your dental problems now, the situation may get worse, and after you will need a lot more money. You also don't have to go to another country to get your teeth fixed. Why go to Thailand if in your city are good clinics? Look for them. Personally, I treated my teeth in my city. I found a good clinic and good specialists. You can visit this website to see what I'm talking about. So don't make hasty decisions.
